    Many years ago I was really good friends with Mark Zonder who was their drummer for a time. At that time he was the drummer for a metal band called Warlord, and I used to hang out with him and the guitarist Bill Tsamis. When Bill left the band and got married, Mark joined Fates Warning. He is in my view one of greatest drummers in the world and has been part of many projects. Chroma Key, Slavior, At War With Self, Ten, and probably many others. I'll go to the website and request some of his stuff, including more Fates Warning. And for a while he owned a house on my street.
    Oh, and by the way, the singer - although I'm not sure if he's singing on this album - Ray Alder, is also the singer for Redemption, which I've requested via your website.
    I also think it's interesting that you mentioned QueensRyche and Dream Theater in context with these guys as a few years ago I saw a concert with these very three bands. In fact two nights in a row.

    I’m so glad you’re reacting to this band. I first hear them in 1991, when they played “Eye to Eye” on the radio. Apparently this is the only time they had some commercial success. I immediately bought their album “Parallels” and was pleasantly surprised on how good it was. I just gotten into Queensryche a few years back, and was looking for something in that genre, and this was it. Each album they produced after that was good, which I can’t say for my favorite band Queensrÿche. Knowing how good Fates Warning is, is like a cult. They are an exceptional band, that’s better than most well known bands. They’re music is like going into a sci-fi world. They get my imagination juices flowing.

    All three of those "big three" toured together in 2003, I caught that tour twice. Fates Warning opened and DT / QR alternated headlining. The two also finished he night by performing together on stage, you can find good footage of some of that. Comfortably Numb was one of the songs they would do together.
    There is a side project called Arch / Matheos that you also need to check out, which is essentially the current Fates Warning reunited with their original singer. Just pick a song, any song from them, they are all amazing.

    • @mysocalledknife07
      @mysocalledknife07 5 лет назад +3

      It's pretty close. Since Prog Rock is defined as the cross between rock and classical music, the question then resides with which metal band crossed classical and heavy metal?
      The closest prior to Fates Warning was, of all bands, Judas Priest on 1977's Sin After Sin album, with the track "Let Us Prey/Call for the Priest". Next up was Fates Warning's Awaken the Guardian with "Guardian" and "Prelude to Ruin".
      Hallowed sounds from these bands.

    • @Capitaomac1
      @Capitaomac1 5 лет назад

      @@mysocalledknife07 right you are, if you consider Judas Priest as Metal at that time. Nevertheless, Fates Warning has 2 albums before Awaken the Guardian already sounding very progressive and very metal when Priest weren' t that heavy at the time. Nor as complex in structure. So, imo, Fates Warning, closely followed by Queensryche, was the first prog METAL band in the early 80's.

    If you wondered why the song sounded so good in your headphones it's because it was recorded using new (at the time) technology call QSound (e.g., Madonna, among others, was using QSound at the time). It was expensive but their producer (Terry Brown- e.g., Rush) suggested it for a few tracks on the album. I believe this was one of those tracks. This band was/is genre defining group. Glad you "discovered" them and gave them some love on the internet. Peace* (PS Read "Destination Onward- The Story of Fates Warning" for more about this band!).

    I actually used to be really good friends with Mark Zonder, the drummer on this album. I knew him best when he was drummer for Warlord, as Bill Tsamis, Warlord's guitarist and I used to hang out together at a local club. Sadly Bill passed away in May at the ripe young age of 60. Mark had also lived down the street from me for a time.

    Fates Warning are an all-time favorite of mine.
    Also if you get in to them, you'll want to hear John Arch/Arch/Matheos at some point.
    The Eleventh Hour is a favorite of many from Parallels.

    Amazing. Zebra and Fates Warning within a day!! Both are now considered “progressive” but at the time they originally came out, people didn’t know what to call it. I called it great. Little did we know back then that they’d be pioneers for future generations.

    Fates Warning... now you're REALLY entering into the realm of brainiac metal.
    The Dream Theater connection is interesting to note (as the members are very good friends), mainly because James Labrie did backup vocals to a song on "Parallels", and Kevin Moore performed keyboards on a song on 1989's "Perfect Symmetry".
    While Fates Warning were not the virtuoso musicians that embodied Dream Theater, their evolution through the mid 80's metal scene left them, oddly enough, without a "home", so to speak. They were far too heavy for progressive rock fans, and they were also too expansive and complex for the swath of fist-banging metalheads from the first MTV generation.
    "The Eleventh Hour", recorded in 1991, was off of their 6th (count em!) album, after slugging through the underground and honing their songwriting skills for 7+ years. It was probably the best introduction that you could have received from the band.
    The joy (and sometimes, dismay) of Fates Warning is that each album sounds so drastically different from the next, that they sometimes don't even sound like the same band. This, seemingly, has kept them on the outskirts of any commercial success, though it is nice to see them mentioned in the same sentence as Dream Theater and Queensryche (and sometimes Rush), as they were truly ahead of their time, much like Judas Priest was ahead of theirs in the 1970's.
    Not loved by everybody, Fates Warning evolved into my favorite band over the years, as it was not such an instant love affair that I had with them. Their music challenged me in ways I haven't been challenged, and even after countless hours of listening, I still hear bits and pieces that I haven't heard, prior.
    I hope you enjoy the journey, should you partake, going forward. Sometimes I wish I was listening to them for the 1st time all over again 🤘🤘

      Thanks for writing that. FW has been my favorite band for a long time because their music is so challenging. It takes multiple listens to get the music, but once you do, it holds up to multiple listens. I think Matheos is an excellent composer and he has a great guitar tone.
      Have you heard "Tuesday the Sky"? It's an instrumental album by Jim that I recommend. It's not metal, but it is proggy.

    @williambevins 5 лет назад +2

    YES! You have made my day. Not my requests but 11th Hour is a good introduction of the band. Ray Alder is a great singer but you have to checkout the John Arch era, the singer on their first 3 albums. I submitted some of the lyrics to "Epitaph" and "Guardian" on your website. They started off as a metal band doing songs that dealt with fantasy and gloom, but changed, became more progressive and the songs became more introspective. Every album they do sound different.
    Paralells is their most commercial sounding album. It was produced by Rush producer Terry Brown which gave them a more polished sound. Jim Matheos is, IMHO, the best composer in prog.
