Ilias Papas Well, right now, if you're in Brisbane, the Game On Symposium is happening, organised by the same people behind this contest (which is happening again this year). Lots of interesting developers talking, including the team behind Crossy Road. www.igdabrisbane.org
Yeah, it's good that small teams of motivated people can make game this easily, but at the same time i feel that developing stuff this way is too cheap, regardless of all the effort required to do it. I have never used Unity, i just took a quick look at it, so i may be wrong, but it seems like it blows off the fun of writing code and designing patterns and systems, like you would normally do using a "low level framework", and developing your own engine. I know that the final product is what counts, but, as an amateur programmer, i find the process of writing code extremely fun and challenging at the same time, and i guess that scripting does not give you the same feeling. Of course talented game developers can really push Unity to the limits, and produce high quality games as Facepunch Studios are doing with Rust for example, but i think that experimenting new things is always good, or we wouldn't have game evolution today, imagine what would have happened if Valve decided to use an existing engine to develop Half Life 2! No Source Engine, no goodies. I don't know why i'm replying to you, but that's ok. Cheers!
StackBrains You still write code if you use Unity, you just don't write your own engine (which isn't as common as you may think, writing your own engine for your small game) :P
I'm curious, did they start from scratch? Where they allowed to re-use code they had previously written? Or models/sprites? I would love to go to one of these one day, but I am a lone developer (I need to get more friends...) so I probably would not be able to do it in 48 hours.
+ComputersAreRealCool No to code or assets made before the 48 hour period. And this year there were two lone developers in the contest. This year's video will be out in the next couple of weeks.
If anyone wants to take part in this year's event (2014), it's on the first weekend in October. Details and signup here: www.igdabrisbane.org/48hr-challenge/2014-48hr-challenge/48hr-info/ I will probably be filming again, so watch for a new video in the next month or two.
So much good looking games in just 48 hours. I think back to the Looka Layle teaser of what they made in a few months or weeks. I wonder what they could make in 3 months
+Iain Anderson lol more than worth it :) I live in America but if I'm ever lucky enough to visit Austrailia I would love to compete for jelly beans. I at least hope I dont get any bogey flavored ones.
im no game developer, but if some day i manage to teach my self or go to school. i believe i have the imagination to make a really cool game with some help :)..
I don't think you can teach yourself, maybe without tutor but not yourself, I mean you may read books, tutorials or blogs and they are made by other ppl so it's not really self taught. I know what you meant but I think the word is widely misused. Anyway good luck learning! motivation is first step.
Hope this is ok to comment here but if anyone’s in need of music for a game they are working on I’m currently looking to work on a project. Thanks for the upload!
Afraid that music doesn't have a name - I created it for this video. I think all the loops are in Logic/Garageband if you want to build something similar.
They used multiple softwares, not just unity, unity is just a game engine. Most teams used 3d packages such as Autodesk Maya and 3ds Max, as well as photoshop to create textures.
TheMC Blender They can use whatever they like. Most are in Unity (and use whatever is supported there) but at least one team in the 2012 comp used HTML/JavaScript for a browser-based game.
is photoshop the only art design software you can use? also can someone name most of the software they used in this video? id like to learn some of them and possibly design a game myself! im still new to all this coding and designing but im really interested in it! thanks!
id do a little child who goes to his grans and she tells him that at spring the monster comes out from under your bed and the only way to stop it is to keep turning the lights on so theres lots of levels where you have to get to the light switch until spring is over.
hey, I'm new to this and i really want to start with this to make my own little game ... Can somebody say me some programs you guys use ? Or give me like tips..... Thx

You need to "develope" your grammar.
Not his grammar but spelling
ok grammar checker
So amazing all these teams. Every games looks so great that you can't even imagine it's made in 48 hours.

Lets all just admire how those guys named their team TEAM WELL PLACED CACTUS.
i WOULDVE NAMED MY TEAM, THE LETTER 6
Everyone of them looks freaking cool.... Looks like in order to be a game developer you must look freaking cool....
Now I need a haircut....
ha ha.
vignesh sivakumar also a weird glasses.
every time someone uses "freaking" at least 2 times I feel sick
Its known as the "hipster" look
Not sure if you’re joking but they all look pale, tired and kind of un-hygienic
Damn this tells me that it really isn't difficult to make a game just dedication and a group of friends wanting in on thee project. Nice
Well, you need to go to school and such, get art desginers and all of that.
With unity everything is possible!
unity3D

I am in love with games and programming. The things you can make on a computer are just crazy.
I'm curious, did they start from scratch? Where they allowed to re-use code they had previously written? Or models/sprites? I would love to go to one of these one day, but I am a lone developer (I need to get more friends...) so I probably would not be able to do it in 48 hours.

no code or assets before the 48 hour period dumbass........
Justin H. im pretty sure they have to use their own shit instead of premade unity stuff
Justin H. hmm, then i dont fucking know. not too familiar with unity so you are probably right.
Justin H. Yeah i get that part. but that is how an engine works xD thousands of games are being made this way.

+Iain Anderson Jellybeans!!
Spend 2 days making a game for jellybeans ?
It's only 2 days. And I think it's more about the experience than the end result.
im no game developer, but if some day i manage to teach my self or go to school. i believe i have the imagination to make a really cool game with some help :)..

thnx for ur honesty.. i hope some day my dream will come true. ^_^..
Ideas are cheap.
Implementing them , that's what counts.
trust me, ideas are not cheap, the best ideas make the best games happen..
moonlander03
You could have the best idea ever...
But if its not implemented well it can easily lose the immersion.

Do they even code?
Yes, heaps of coding. Some do art, some make music, some model, some code.
Iain Anderson Do they use the same language or all different kinds?
TheMC Blender They can use whatever they like. Most are in Unity (and use whatever is supported there) but at least one team in the 2012 comp used HTML/JavaScript for a browser-based game.

Where can i listen to the song in the very end?
is photoshop the only art design software you can use?
also can someone name most of the software they used in this video? id like to learn some of them and possibly design a game myself! im still new to all this coding and designing but im really interested in it!
