It would be nice if there was an indicator to where a pickup is going to spawn for about a second before it spawns so you aren't caught completely off guard by it.
Fun fact: this type of game was shipped by default with some 2000s iPods and it was really interesting because the movement of the bar was controlled with the spinning wheel / touch wheel!
Downloading unity is actually no easy thing tho... At least if you just try to get the plain editor without any tutorials or sth which I believe they call microgames. They really want you to learn their way but (at least to me) RUclips and Google just get the job done :)
@@izjgxj4275 i didn't knew those things existed, when i downloaded unity there was no tutorial or "micro games" i wish i knew about those instead of being hours trying to figure out how unity works

How funny. The experience you described about stumbling into a jam mirrors what I experienced Friday evening for Miz Jam 1. I'd never done a jam before, and neither did I think I would.. but as I was rating some of the entries, my brain picked up on an idea that it could not let go of. And, the rest is history. Also, I learned the lesson that you suggested: it's better to make a game too easy than too hard. By the way, the impact that you added to the collision (the sort of pulse on the ring) looks A+
Really cool looking game you ended up with, Vim! You got time to polish this concept very well and it's also really cool to see a different art style (I mean no pixel art). On a side note, remote previews are a very powerful tool from Construct! I've been using it on my Discord community to get early feedbacks on new features and it helps a lot. Thank you for sharing your experience like this. This is really helpful, and congrats for this very cool and original entry! A.
At the start of the video when you showed the paddle moving circularly for the first time, I said "wow that is cursed" because there is a trend in minecraft where people make videos /mods and call them "cursed minecraft". In the video/mod the mechanics of the game are changed in unexpected/weird ways. (Look up cursed minecraft on RUclips to see what I'm talking about). And then I find out that the theme is cursed! I guess that's another way your jam fits the theme.
upgrades could work, but if you make it so they may have to try to avoid them if it's an upgrade they don't like. Or put 2 on screen at the same time, then they can try to pick one, and it can add the chalange of dealing with picking up the wrong one

Awesome game love it! One suggestion.. I’d make the paddle a solid color so that it doesn’t look bent when orbiting (I believe it has 2 shades of blue, tough to see on my phone?), other than that fantastic!
There are a ton of resources out there for editing. I use Davinci Resolve 16 to edit, record audio with Audacity, and record my screen with OBS (All free). As for content, the best thing I can say is talk about why did something rather than how and don't leave a bunch of static code on the screen for long. Best of luck!
Cool video. Really nails down the thing small and then think smaller for game jams. I made a similar game (independently) called Brick Buster Revolution, a circular Brick Breaking game. There was an old game called Vortex that put the rotating paddle thing together too.
You know what would've been cursed? If you needed to use left, right, up, or down depending on where you were on the circle. (E.g. right is clockwise if you're on the top but counterclockwise if you're on the bottom - it always moves you to the right)
Love your devlogs - they are always so insightful in how the game got constructed. Tried to make a couple of devlogs myself, but really struggle with the huge amount of time it takes to find the right video. And seeing you uploaded a video after just a couple of hours, I was wondering if you could give a bit insight into how you make your devlogs. For instance, do you record all the time while working on your games and then later browse through it all looking for specifc parts to complement your voice-over / story? Or do you keep the devlog in the back of your head all the time and record small pieces while working on your games? Would appreciate it a lot if you could help me out a bit ^^
Once you had the power-up start rotating with the paddle, it made me think it might be interesting to have a different shape for them (maybe more rectangular?) so between the shape and the rotation the player can control the direction of the ball more.
I like it, I think the only thing that I'd change is make it so when it bounced off the pickup that the Ball's speed would be cut in half so that if it spawned out of nowhere so it doesn't feel unfair.
some small ideas if you ever do another update to the game: a hard mode that shrinks the circle a little every 10 hits, a multiplayer pvp mode where a central spinning paddle has to hit the ball away from the main paddle, and possibly some obstacles that spawn and debuff you instead of helping
I think that a random spawn that acts as an obstacle that immediately ends the game sounds interesting, maybe you should try having both a reset and a grow

i think you shoulda had a smaller spawn circle inside the big circle, then make it trigger a random chance to spawn the reset block when it leaves the spawn circle so that the reset block will only spawn when the pong dot is moving away from it. that way you cant get screwed by a random spawn as easy
