What a great series it was, I think Aussies won it 4-3 in a neck to neck fight. Michael Bevan, what a player! Watching cricket was so exciting in those days. ODI cricket in its peak. its painful to see ODIs and test matches are over shadowed by tasteless and over rated t20 cricket these days..

Lost so much sleep during this series as a 14 yr old. Highlights don't do it justice, but at the time it was like chasing 400. Beven was clinical. A truley underrated white ball player. He would have made a bucket load in the T20 era

Beating a strong SA side in SA, Aus were in the nascent stages of their world domination. I used to root for the aussies during this period, because they were the only ones who beat SA regularly when SA were a very strong side. I have literally seen / followed the rise of Aus as a world beater. There were only a few instances when Gilchrist played purely as a batsmen in the Aus ODI team, such was his batting poweress.

In those days only bevan had 50 avg in odi, it is very difficult to maintain 50 avg in odi becoz of fielding rules & larger boundary
Nowadays it is easy to get in 50 avg in odi because of shorter boundary, free hit, field restrictions...

Really, Waugh brothers were South Africa's Achilles heel in both Odis and test matches. SA could just not win against Aus. They could just win a few battles here and there but the war was always won by Aussies. Infact , some of the South African players were afraid and didn't enjoy playing the Aussies, like Cullinan, Donald etc

Lol, seems coming from a lockdown kid who has no idea about 90s cricket. SA team was a very strong team back then but as we all know they were chokers. They used to defeat Australia most of the time in the league stages but lost finals on most of the occasions. So claiming that they were afraid is laughable.

South Africa was quite a strong side during those days. They had depth in bowling and batting due to world class allrounders. But Australia had strong specialist players, which is why they were a little more organized, and eventually they managed to have psychological hold against South Africa and many other teams as well. They always knew how they will win, but in case of South Africa it was always confusion during big matches and they end up choking, because they were never sure what contribution each player was going to make.

@chronosmagasaurus2813 But, with the very favourable conditions in the South Asian surfaces. Then, the Sri Lankan team had good all-round players and probably the best team ever to play a final for Sri Lanka. In the same tournament, what Australia did against WI in the semi-finals was quite remarkable.
