    Fritz Weinschenk (1923-2012) was born in Mainz, Germany and emigrated to the US with his family to escape Nazi persecution in the mid 30s. He served in the US Army's 293rd Joint Assault Signal Company and landed in the second wave on Omaha Beach, June 6th 1944. Two months later his outfit was sent to the Pacific and ultimately participated in the invasion of the Philippines. In 1946, he returned to Germany to serve in the American Military Government and was involved in the Nuremberg Trials. Fritz was admitted to the NY State Bar in 1953 and became heavily involved in restitution and indemnification cases for the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference), supplying thousands of Holocaust survivors with essentials and supporting Holocaust education research. #usarmedforces

    This is my grandpa. Thank you so much for posting this as I had not seen it before. Unfortunately, Fritz passed away in 2012 but not a day goes by where I don’t think about him and his influence on me and my father’s life. Thank you for the kind comments, I know he would have appreciated them .

    "I came, just over here, to Cherbourg in 1935. And I came back in 1944". Matter of fact, and "I was just a guy".
    Unbelievable.

    "I was just a guy," he says to the camera crew. If I could have spoke to him after I would have told him, "true, you were 'just a guy' along with thousands just like you on that beach that day and together liberated a country giving it back to its people and changing the direction of a horrible war. So "no", I would have told him, "you were more than just a guy, you are heroes." May God bless them all. 🇺🇲🇬🇧🇨🇦

      Amen. I hadn't watched this interview in its entirety since we filmed that day. I was really anxious when walking the beach and didn't have time to really enjoy it.

    My great great uncle Russ was wounded at the battle of the bulge and about 30 or 40 years ago he was invited to one of these events but he replied “I had enough France when I was in the service.” He died bout 20 years and unfortunately I never got to meet him.

    American, Canadian, British, French, simply the greatest generation of our time ,sadly never to be repeated. Take away the youths mobile phone away .and they would surrender. Its so tragic to witness the greatest generation to our day 80 years on to the this day to witness the new generation that is simply carbage , the youth of today simply do not interact by their voices but only via text so so sad .

      Not the greatest, they were ass kickers but the greatest generation wouldn’t have a group of people oppressing other races. America wasn’t free For Natives, Hispanics, Blacks or asians. They were all treated like shit and had their right taken from them.

    Impossible not to be emotional watching him as he speaks about being kicked out of Germany for being Jewish, leaving Cherbourg in 1935, only to be back in France in 1944. Beautiful

    There are other modest people who have served in armed forces in other parts of the world sometimes for years who suffered all the discomforts and dangers yet they don't go on about it like these fellows - year after year

    • @stevenkarras3490
      @stevenkarras3490  Месяц назад +2

      Thank god some of them go on about it, especially these fellows. D Day was the bigggest amphibius invasions in modern history (or one of them) and recording the stories of living participants, for posterity, is an invaluable resource. And you won't have to worry about hearing them much longer.

    For all the Army, Navy and Air-Force, men + ladies, who prepared for and fought in, even with sacrifice of their own lifes, the big Overlord operation (D-Day) our, all and best, respect! Let us say: Honours, be, for all, of them! For all, who, already in the eternity or still alived, gave admirable and nice examples (we must never forget) let us pray to be never forgotten by God and His blessings, for all of them! All were finaly, forever, like God soldiers and started the invitation for Europe all people build a life with no tyranny nazi, in peace and for the democracy (always giving hands like brothers)! D-Day, was, is and will be - forever - a remarkable and unforgetable date! Here, just a portuguese and christian family, in Portugal. Respectfully. L+E
