    Pro tip: Better to hang the manifold from a wire or bungee to easily access all surfaces in one coat. And it's much better to bake it. You can even speed cure by using a heat gun and heat it from inside out. That will ensure you get the wrinkle finish. Done many of these using VHT and powder coat finishes over the years.

    • @SubaruONLY
      @SubaruONLY  5 лет назад +2

      👍👍 Great advice!!! You are totally correct 100%. Actually playing with the heat gun and thinking of doing a quick follow-up video to discuss that option - but I didn’t think to use the heat gun from the inside!!! That’s really clever!!! Thank you!! 👊

      I like to preheat the part I'm painting. Really helps set it in quickly and as stated, promote the wrinkle effect.

    Well done with these videos, there is a lot of Subaru content on RUclips but but very few talk about the important small details, miss steps in a process and often waffle on about irrelevant crap. The small details that other RUclipsrs gloss over is what makes the difference with your videos being comprehensive.

    There is also wrinkle red powder coating that look about the same. As well you won't have to worry about paint scratches. But if you diy you will need an over about 22in long or tall.

    That's a really nice and well done finish. I am wondering though, that, if you are going to go to so much trouble to make the intake look good, why didn't you deburr and grind off all the casting marks? This is something I do routinely to all engine and tranny element in my builds. I like the look better and it has the added benefit of being smooth if I need to get my hands or fingers into tight places.

    Off topic, but.................
    I'm looking to buy an older WRX as a project car / daily driver. What years would you recommend?
    I'm open to anything from 2004 up to 2016.

    • @SubaruONLY
      @SubaruONLY  5 лет назад

      Awesome to hear! And good call - these cars are a great investment and if you can do a little wrenching at home, they have a very modest cost to maintain. I like the 04-07 WRX models the most and think they are the best bargain at the moment - mechanically they are all very similar, so I’d just get one that was well maintained and has the body style (AND color) that appeals most to your taste! One thing to note is the engine platform changed on the WRX for the 2015 MY, with the introduction of the FA motor design - I think the older design, the EJ (which was retained for the STi models), is design that has more aftermarket parts and has had all the kinks worked out; so I prefer the EJ design more too.
      You’ll probably be looking at cars with over 100K miles, so look for one that has had the timing belt done and hopefully the head gaskets redone. Those are the two big maintenance items that will need to be done for most 10+ Subaru vehicles. Good luck and let us know what you end up getting!!!

    • @chrisboyd4433
      @chrisboyd4433 5 лет назад

      @@SubaruONLY I am assuming I'll do the head gasket/timing belt/water pump unless it has been done (and documented) recently.
      The problem will be finding a non-modded car with little rust up here in Maine.

    • @SubaruONLY
      @SubaruONLY  5 лет назад

      Whoa, great eye man! It’s actually the little round plastic clips I was using to cover the bolt holes, that one slid out a little and I didn’t catch it before continuing to paint. Caused a little red paint to cover the top area but I’ll just touch it up with sand paper to remove the light dusting of red paint.

    May as well toss that original turbo inlet! Those suck. No problem to break. If you're getting to it like that, should swap it for a better aftermarket silicone one

    • @SubaruONLY
      @SubaruONLY  3 года назад +1

      @@SubaruONLY ah yeah. Im in WA, they quit doing emissions here like 1-2yrs ago. They said it wasn't worth it... lol I was definitely happy not to hassle with that anymore!

    • @mcsqueegee81
      @mcsqueegee81 3 года назад

      It is common for the factory turbo inlet to break when you're trying to take it out, also they tend to fail where they connect to the turbo, and leak there. The flow is not as good as aftermarket ones. Smaller I think & also having the ribs

    • @SubaruONLY
      @SubaruONLY  3 года назад

      That’s awesome. The regs in CA are ridiculous and only getting worse - cheers!

    • @SubaruONLY
      @SubaruONLY  3 года назад

      I’ve only seen the little rubber connection points torn - like most of the time - don’t often see any other areas that fail. And yes, the flow is not great with OEM tube, at least for HP, smaller tubes are good for low end torque and that’s good for daily city driving, but if you want HP above 3K, need a larger ID and smoother inner surface, as you point out! 👊

    • @Rubostli
      @Rubostli 5 лет назад

      @@SubaruONLY I recomend you buy a jdm ej207 from 2001 or newer. That is the strongest oem subaruengine, it has a plenty strong block for at least 500 hp, you don't need closed deck unless you want more. I would recomend you just go with a stock 207 the first time, it shouldn't be a problem with emissions either
