  • Here we'll repair a complaint of "shuddering" just prior to coming to a stop. This was a strange one that had me on the wrong track at first. There was zero vibration or noise at ANY speed ... EXCEPT just prior to stopping, say around 5-8 MPH. The car would shudder fairly violently. Using the E-brake to stop the car made it worse. You already know the problem from the title, but I've never had a u-joint failure present these symptoms in the 35 years I've been around the mechanical side of vehicles.
    I also make a big rookie mistake which ruined a new part, so I have to order another one and do the job over again. Did you expect something to go smoothly around here? Didn't think so! LOL!

    Love your calm and collective approach to car maintenance 😂. I agree 100% with you on the American Volvo's. I had the volvo 740, got rid and bought a volvo s80. 2 years on got rid and bought another volvo 740. I get so much respect, thumbs up and smiles driving the old 740. Mine is not the turbo, but it's a joy to drive and work on. I think drivers of new cars are looking for admiration, but hey oh they are run of the mill, nowt special.

    Yes thanks so much for this video !! I have to do it soon on one of my two 940 and this video is the only one so detailed with so many views of what's going on (including errors...)... I paid particular attention to the use of the h-press to put off and on the bearing. Hope I don't have to do the U-joints, they look time consuming. By the way, here in Europe, I bought the whole piece (bearing+rubber+frame) all together. Actually my bearing is good, only the rubber is dead.

    Thanks for this video. I have a 93 Volvo 960 wagon that needs the drive shaft bearing replaced. Gonna attempt to do this myself. Really enjoyed the comments about everything. They will have to pry my cold dead fingers off the steering wheel of my Volvo & F250 Turbo diesel. They can keep the plug & go vehicle. Can just imagine what fresh can of hell it will be to work on that hot mess. God bless, Debi

      Amen to that, Debi! We've also got a '86 Grand Marquis with 287k miles on the original driveline, and a '07 Silverado 1500 4x4 - I'll be keeping all of them forever. The older stuff gives me MUCH less grief than the '07 has, however. Almost done replacing and beefing up the failure prone OE parts on that truck. Cost a pile of money! It's ridiculous.     good evening smitty! yea always press on the correct side of the bearing!!! anyways nice diag and job! we all done that with our lights mine was a snap on ouch!! i hate my astro i have a prolite for a year now and its awesome and it takes a beatin anyways have a good week ahead

      Evening, Dave! Thanks man! Yeah, still trying to figure out what I was thinking there with that bearing, lol. What a dumb mistake!
      And speaking of dumb mistakes, everything bad that's happened to my Astro lights was all my doing. Before I left that one under a car, I backed into it with my trailer tail light - broke both! I was shocked the Astro still worked after that, since it cracked the lens pretty much in half. Just one little LED stopped working, but the rest kept on. I'm satisfied with them for now. I've had to fix that magnet at least 5x over the past year, though. JB Weld only lasts so long before it crumbles. Last time I ran a screw in, and JB'ed the whole thing, so we'll see how that works along with being more careful with the thing, lol. Have a good week yourself there - got some nice weather on the way it looks like! About time. Going to be a mud bog over here as usual. I want to try to fly, but I don't think it's going to be possible.

    I recently changed the clutch on my -95 945 volvo and along with it i changed the transmission bearing, driveshaft bearing and flex disc
    And golly did i get a ruckus of a vibration driving around 80km/h. Changed back to the Old flex disc and it got a bit better but still very very audible and shaky.
    people were saying the Ujoints are extremely sensitive to becoming off-balance when changing these parts and that its likely that one has to take the shaft in for balancing.
    Bit of a bummer since it is an easy car to work on, but these things can't be messed with i guess unless you're a pro.

      The key is getting the joints set in to where they don't bind. That's where the trick of whacking the edge of the shaft near the cap with a hammer comes in. Don't need to be a pro, but that's where you learn all these little tricks. Usually just a couple whacks is all it takes, and the caps will find their "home" after you press them in. If there is ANY binding whatsoever with the new joint, you will feel that on a test drive. Once you do this job once, it will stick with you. Some jobs are harder than others - all depends on how much rust there is. I've done some real gnarly ones in the past! No fun, that's for sure.
      The mistake I made on that center carrier bearing caused a vibration around that same speed. Once I replaced the bearing and pressed it in the CORRECT way (not from the center!), all was well. Guy is still driving it now and it's as smooth as glass right up to 130 km/h.

      Just re-read your post - you might be able to just unbolt the shaft, and re-install it 180° from where it is right now. I always mark driveshafts before removal so that they go back in exactly how they came out. Sometimes the factory balances everything as a unit in one position, and they'll vibrate if out of that position.

      @@SmittySmithsonite So what we have done so far is we took the driveshaft in for balancing and sure enough it was off balance.
      We put it back on the car and while the vibration decreased by a large margin it still vibrates quite heavily between 60-80km/h and at lower speed like 40km/h.
      We've tried putting some washers to lift the bearing up a bit but it made 0 difference.
      Since it is a off-brand bearing and not directly bought from volvo we're now going to just straight up buy from Volvo even if it is a bit more expensive. this whole thing is giving me one hell of a headache and i just want to drive my damn car!

      @@smiIingman - that sucks, sorry to hear that. Yeah it’s a common problem these days. Sad part is even OE stuff today isn’t as good as it used to be, but not much of a choice these days. Some of the aftermarket stuff is absolute garbage. I see it all the time. Hope you get it straight. 🍻

    I agree. No dip stick, no service. That's just looking for trouble. Like Eric says "You guys in Florida can rebuild a car with a Crescent wrench". Well I'm glad the second time around was a winner.

      I couldn't believe the dipstick thing on that XC60. Crazy! One failed sensor, chaffed wire, or if communication goes down, you have no way to check your oil! Might not be a huge deal when the car is new, but I'd wager when that gets older, that's going to be a sure way of getting to the crusher as soon as possible. Seems to be what automakers are striving for lately!
      On that note I just towed my neighbor's '17 Ram 1500 (125k miles ± ) after he got left at work at 11pm dead in the water - no crank. He's only had the vehicle barely 60 days, plus bought an extended warranty, so he figured he was covered. I dropped the truck off at the dealer for him the next day. On the phone, they say, "Yeah, it's more than likely covered". We get there, and they want $150 diag.fee up front. Should've left right then. When he picked the truck up, they replaced the starter, both cables and the battery (which was still good - I had checked it!). The bill? $1,000!!!!! WOW ... how do they sleep at night??
      My best friend is down in FL right now. He's been sending me pictures of all these perfect rust-free vehicles, HUGE trucks that would never pass MA inspection, shots of an 85° beach, palm trees, wild parakeets grazing in the grass, etc. etc.. Told me he's not coming back! He can have a 4 bedroom house built from scratch for less than a condemned dump up here. Got me thinking I want to head south! Wife isn't on board with that plan. Maybe if I hound her relentlessly for the next 10 years she'll give in, lol. :D Wish me luck! Truth be told, I'd be content anywhere outside the Northeast from WV on down.

      @@SmittySmithsonite Florida is wicked humid in the summers and they are long. I had to leave for that reason. But yes, compared to your area, it's cheaper to live there as long as you're not on the coast. I had a 2100 square foot home built in 1990 and my property bill was $1800 a year. (It did vary up and down with the housing market). And the winters are wonderful.

      @@wyattoneable - Thanks for the info! WOW, what a bargain! I pay almost double that for 1,400 sq. ft.! I tolerate heat pretty well. I spent 2 years in Phoenix, and loved every minute of it. I'd be out on the motorcycle with no shirt or helmet at 114° out, lol. My buddy from CA wouldn't leave his AC if it was above 90° hahaha! We were total opposites in that regard. His apartment was always 62° - I'd freeze going in there. He'd laugh.
      So, one of my neighborhood buddies moved down there over 5 years ago, and I've got 2 best friends planning on moving there as well. I'm in a pretty good spot where I'm at - very rural for this part of the country, so it's tolerable. My other buddies, one is in the city, and the other in a populated suburb - both have had enough, between the neighborhood bickering, vandalism, taxes, regulations, and on and on. Cars rot away to nothing, roads are the worst I've ever seen (and also destroy your wheeled investment), and everyone's got their hand in your pocket at every turn. Getting to be too much to bear for most people. One buddy has been trying to build a garage like mine for around a year now. Every time he crosses one hurtle, the city throws up another - building is too high ... then it's too close to neighboring property ... then it's too close to the tracks ... then the foundation needs to be deeper ... and on and on. He's $3,000 in the hole to the city so far with zero to show for it. I can't blame him for leaving. First chance I get to bail, I'm going to jump myself. The state is run by lunatics.

    Regarding the "Made in Italy" bearing, I just did mine this morning and the old bearing was marked a bit off-center (as yours probably was too), and I can just make out "SKF" on the side opposite the "Made in Italy" mark. Interestingly my bearing was absolutely fine, felt and looked brand new after 210k, it was the rubber part that failed, causing a clunk just as the vehicle was stopping or coming away from a stop.

      Yeah, that seems to be the way they all go, all around that same mileage. We've got 210k on our 940, but so far they're hanging in there. Up here in MA the rubber seems to hang on a bit longer since there isn't alot of heat, as compared to down South or out West. The one in the video here had roughly 240k on it when that rear one locked up. The speedometer pickup in the rear diff had some issues, so could've had 300k on it for all I know.

      @@SmittySmithsonite Mine's an Illinois/Wisconsin car. Was it the speedo pickup itself that was faulty, or the wiring harness? In my case it was the harness because the bracket that holds the harness had rusted away, allowing the wires to flop and go open circuit midway through the wire. For reference, my parents bought my car (a 1994) brand new in December of 1994 for $24k (base model + turbo).

      @@moconnell663 -Never investigated the cause on the '95, but on our '93, cleaning the sensor, changing the diff oil, & cleaning the reluctor tabs next to the ring gear fixed our problem. Haven't had a glitch in the speedometer since. It used to glitch out after sitting all summer, every time. Was probably alot of fine metal particles in the oil interrupting or confusing the signal.
      That was alot of money in '94! That's why these cars are built so well. They gave you what you paid for in those days. Sadly those times are long gone now. The stuff every brand is rolling off their assembly lines today is garbage compared to the high end models of the 80's & 90's.

    i have had SO much problems with aftermarket CRAP support. they look the same on the outside.. they r NOT made the same in the inside. they neglected to put in the part that flex. so it is stiff as hell.

    Did I hear you right @38:08? You paid $85 each for those GKN U 110 u-joints? I just ordered 3 of the same u-joints for my '90 740 GL from FCP EURO and I paid $8.49. I guess one of us got a good deal! Lol :)

      These were OE Volvo u-joints, right from the manufacturer. There is no way you got OE that cheap. Might be the same manufacturer, but they are NOT the same joints.

      Nice - I'll have to look into those. I've got a set of Snap-On ones I bought 20 years ago, but I've rarely used them. They have spikes inside the sockets. I've rarely found them useful. Half the time I can't get them on the nut! They were pretty damned expensive, too ...

      Yeah, they've gone WAY downhill. Just the differences between '95 940's and the newer models from '96 up is huge. I deliver alot of used Volvos for a car dealer - they always have problems! Every single one, regardless of how new. I just delivered an '18 recently, and the entire center console display blanked out as I backed it off the trailer. Thankfully with a key cycle, it started working again. Just the "Quick Start" manual for this thing is PAGES thick - ridiculous amount of gadgetry and electronics. That thing will never make it past it's 6th year of existence in this part of the country ...
