    That's a good question : )
    The bolts rotate with the drive shaft because they attach the gear box and the differential to it.
    if they have not the same weight it can cause a balance problem and vibrations.
    it can looks like ridiculous but if one is 5 or 10 grams heavier than the others it will cause bad vibrations.
    that's why you have to check the are the same lenght too. : )

    Excellent video, only thing is my eyes grew wide as I saw the grinder come out! My 3 jaw puller took the bearing off without too much trouble. Steady hand, bro!

    • @michaelovitch

      Thanks.
      I had no puller,i do have now.
      The grinder is handy on wheel bearings when you can't insert the jaws behind the inner race.

    Happy it helped you !
    If your drive shaft vibrates : check that the bearing is well seated on the extremity of the shaft, if not it can be the problem too.
    be sure the two parts of the drive shaft are well bolted together and no crap is between the two contact flat surfaces.

    I learned alot from this movie.
    I have a serious problem on my Volvo 940. I changed the middle bearing part (rubber thing with the metall thing that turns around...LOL :p ) and now the whole car vibrates. because when i took the drive shaft apart, I didn't think that it would have a say that I just entered the shafts together whatever way I would. But now I think maybe I know why it is vibrating and I will check. but I seriously hope that I have the same marks that you did on yours... Thanks! :)

    Great video and pretty funny too. My spring came out most of the way and I thought it was not supposed to be there(so I pulled it out, bending it in the process) but now I see that it is meant to be there. I will replace it and hope I don't need to do the bearing and rubber-but if I do your video made it look easy, thanks.

    Nice Job.
    I did this repair on my 1990 Volvo 240 including replacing the rubber part.
    Hummer did the job for me however.
    Yours was more difficult to remove.

  • @michaelovitch
    @michaelovitch  11 лет назад +1

    Zero trouble.
    Just think to mark all the parts before to remove them.
    You have to reinstall them exactly the same way. : )

    Thank you for the comment.
    yeah it was stuck because old and because the factory paint was applied after the bearing was installed
    Maybe it would have been easier if i removed the paint first.

    I'm very happy if it helps you!
    If you're new bearing is studborn to go on the drive shaft you can let the drive shaft in a freezer few hours or the night to retract the metal and facilitate you the job.
    Thanks for your comment !

  • @daftnord4957

    To whom it may concern, you don't want to oil or grease bearing races to the mating surface, the risk would be that it can spin and ruin the part its on

    For the beginners; if u gonna heat it up like in 2:20, don't apply the heat to shaft, very simple rule, metal expands... I quess michael did it to remind&teach us...

    • @michaelovitch
      @michaelovitch  10 лет назад

      : )
      The bearing was seized on the shaft.
      I was trying to expand the whole assembly to make it move to unseize the two parts.
      Just heating the whole stuff is often enough to make them to separate once became cold.
      the particles of rust,dust of old grease burn and allow movement.
      I agree on the principle of course,you expand the part wich is around the other to have a bigger dameter and slide it off.
      i do it to install bearings i use heat and cold at the same time it's really cool : )

  • @michaelovitch
    @michaelovitch  12 лет назад

    If it's just a problem of non matching parts you certainly have marks of wear or like in my case arrow or paint spots.
    in my case you can only bolt the two parts in two different ways because the holes are not equally distributed : it's a symetrical system
    if it's like for me just flip one part 180° and retry it .
    It should be good.
    Give me news in any case !

  • @michaelovitch
    @michaelovitch  12 лет назад

    @spelunkerd
    Thank you !
    It's a bit the poor man's methods....i wish i had a press for sure.
    i thought i would have to use the freezer to retract the shaft and use the oven to heat up a bit the bearing but it worked without.
    i was surprised (and happy)

    Make sure the centre support bracket is grease oil free before reinstalling. The rubber donut doesn't like oil or grease.

      Yes,like all "rubber" bushings,they deteriorate quite fast as soon the is petroleum producst on it.

    Yes the bearing could cause this noise.
    You should locate the noise quite easily with your ears just behind the 2 front seats.
    If it was a wheel bearing you would hear it on one side or the other.
    277 000 is enough for it lol

    if this bearind lasted 300,000 km, it was very good
    too make it last, every year, use a needle and shoot a bit of grease
    as most bearings on a Volvo 240, it's generic and they can be found about everywhere
    these volvo 240 were designed and builted to be easy to maintain.
    I regret these cars

    if it's the bearing on the driveshaft it really should get some
    grease, i learned the hard way, my bearing siezed and destroyed
    the rubber part and it sounded like a jack hammer under the car
    because the drive shaft wasn't being held in place and then my rear transmission seal was destroyed as a result

  • @Stale_Mahoney
    @Stale_Mahoney 7 лет назад

    oust looking up how to do it because after changing a gearbox mount it lifted the axle a little and now the old worn out driveshaft bushing cause the axle to knock around in bumps and engine startups as it does no longer rest on the ruined driveshaft bushing as much :)

    • @michaelovitch
      @michaelovitch  7 лет назад

      You know where to find the new bushing ?

    • @Stale_Mahoney
      @Stale_Mahoney 7 лет назад

      indeed here in scandinavia the volvo rwd series is used often for classic folk rallyes or track use and they are popular to tune as the engines are fairly bulletproof and they handle well even sideways, so it's quite a market for parts to them, i buy my bushings and bearings the same website as i buy my suspension mods and bether handling components as bigger swaybars and sport dampers and springs.
      website is called (www.,pedersenracing.no)

    • @michaelovitch
      @michaelovitch  7 лет назад

      The weight distribution is very good on the 244 ,it's 49% 51% for rear and front ,it helps to go sideways lol
      I know the two valve evo heads are really popular,i've seen a lot on pictures.
      You are lucky to have those ressources,it's very difficult here in France to have used parts...

    • @Stale_Mahoney
      @Stale_Mahoney 7 лет назад

      yeah volvo got quite a following up here, even during the winter they are very well behaved on slippery roads and very predictable, personally i got a 88 740, it's been kind to me but i cant say i have treated it with the same love, so now as it gets to the magical veteran age of 30 soon i will start restoring/improving it, the 2 valve stock 530 head is not the best optimised but i have seen ported and machined down stock heads reach up to 280+ NA hp on the flywheel with good twin weber tunes, but that is mostly for rally use.
      ACM is also a company that have designed a 2 valve head designed in 2016 for the volvo B230 engines and it's said to easily be able to compete with the evo head.
      Personally i like the linear power you get from the NA engines, and the ability to stroke those B230 engines to 3,1L is a quite the boost of volume for a I4.

BUT you got it done with ingenuity. I had it replaced at shop. Now, from a stop, a vibration occurs everytime I accelerate.

    • @michaelovitch
      @michaelovitch  9 лет назад

      The drive shaft is balanced.
      Maybe they didn't respect the alignment/balancing marks on the two parts of the driveshaft and it's shaking ?
      thay are little arrows
      Maybe the bearing is not installed correctly flat ont he driveshaft ?
      the rubber housing even on backwards is not a problem i think,they messed up something else.
      the bushings on the rear control arms are not a problem,they don't wear out very fast.
      those guys will always find you something to do on your car.
      if you had no the vibration before to go at the shop don't let them brainwash you with others problems.

    OMG you are beating on the new bearing with a ?? Scraper tool, really?, At least next time use a piece of pipe and how did you index the driveshaft?

    • @michaelovitch
      @michaelovitch  6 лет назад

      A very wide chisel,yes.
      It's doing the same as a punch.
      As you can see,there is the old inner race bearing between the two parts.
      You can beat with whatever you want,as long as you don't damage your parts.
      You can use a piece of pipe when you have a pipe with apropriate dimensions,that i had not.

    Part of this video the guy apples a flame to the bearing DO NOT DO THIS IVE SEEN ONE PERSON DO THIS AND ONE BALL BEARING EXPLODED TAKING HIS EYE OUT YOU ONLY NEED TO DO IT ONCE UDE THE PROPER GEAR ITS NOT WORTH HARMING YOURSELF Andy

      Andy Watts
      Maybe this person used an acetylene torch ?
      Here it's just propane and only few seconds.
      bearings do not blow up like that as i know,at worst the grease cook in it and they smoke pretty bad.
      What happened exactly ?

    • @Andy588tt
      @Andy588tt 9 лет назад

      There has to be one? Do not apply any flame to bearings to try and free the inner flange as one day your luck will run out you only need one ball bearing that is case hardened to have an inner floor which you cannot see and the expansion will make it explode like a grenade our eyes and our life are to precious then to remove a stubborn bearing do the job the safe way which is the only way any hint of harm don't do it because its no worth it Regards Andy
