Since I became a victim of a burglary, I would never buy a watch without paper. Just because it’s more likely to be a stolen watch. I will not support the thieves.
Yeah, grey and secondary dealers always pump watches without box and papers as it increases the pool of watches they can sell, they can lowball on the purchase and put their “reputation stamp” on it to try and get a bigger margin. I get it with an old vintage, but the lack of good databases to tell if a watch is stolen, and the difficulty of explaining it when you want to sell, make it a poor move for a small saving.
@@mkyhou1160 true that. But to be fair for grey market sellers it’s impossible to know if a watch was stolen or nit. That’s just the „risk“ of this business. Although legal the morality in this is questionable. And yes, it’s very likely that a 20 or 30 years old watch has no paperwork anymore. But the speedy for instance, that was stolen as well, that was from 2018 and originally came in the huge speedy box. If such a watch cone’s without all the papers, box, magnifier, velcro strap etc it’s clearly stolen. And anyway l‘m pretty sure some guy has bought it meanwhile from the burglar.
I like my Seiko SKX too. I may be an old fogey but in my opinion the golden age of watch making and indeed of all industrial design was the 1950's and '60's, not the 1990's.
I have had my Goldeneye on my wrist almost everyday for 15 years now (bought it used). I have had so many others in my collection over the years, but that is the one that never crosses my mind to sell. Autos and Manual are great in their own ways, but to just pick it up and go? Quartz all day.
My quartz Onega Seamaster and Breitling Aerospace are prized possesions. Anyone who sticks up their noses at them shows a clear lack of intelligence, and probably secretly covets a Richard Mille.
Rockin my Seiko SKX and giving my Sub a break . I love wearing it although it gains 4-5 minutes every 3 days. I don’t do it on purpose but I don’t cry about beating it up. Love it.
You can easily fix that accuracy by a minor adjustment. I got mine to within 3-4 seconds a day fast. Takes about 5 minutes using $20 worth of tools I bought on Amazon.
Jeez, my Speedmaster and my Seamaster Diver 300M both came from Delray Watch. So did my Pelagos. Perhaps I should have purchased a Black Bay instead to keep with the streak of most sold watches? 😀
Ah! Ah! Service costs, spot on Fed. I remember moaning about the fuel and insurance costs for my Lotus Esprit turbo. My father shut me up by saying ‘ if you can’t afford these costs get rid of it!’ I never complained again! Love your channel . 🏴
Hi Fed…own a vintage (circa 1990) Rolex Oyster Quartz Date Just. Very unique and cool piece that’s an exception to your quartz discussion. Love the story behind its creation in the late 1970’s and an interesting way to get into a classic like the DJ
That’s incorrect. I did my research and Oyster Quartz DJ is very easy to service (relative to other vintage models) and a battery is cheap. Parts are not an issue either.
Hi Fed Great video! Commenting cause i wanted to say that Biver didn't invent Hublot, the original owner of the brand was Carlo Crocco who then later sold the brand
Oxymoron sentence alert - high horology based off an eta movement 🤦♂️- as always love the channel agree with you about collection size - love wearing my Seiko turtle on holiday to foreign countries , love wearing my g shocks and Hamilton’s for work , Keep my Breitlings for family events posh days out
Trying to slim down to 3-4 watches. Had several SKX's, good in their day, but obsolete now and way overpriced! As for servicing, just had my Omega Seamaster 300 done, £485 & 4 months - the wait was painful, but well worth the money - 5 days on wrist and running spot on 😁 Quartz, just NO!!! 🤣 May as well have a Fitbit or smartwatch.... Box & papers don't bother me as I usually buy to keep anyway. Golden era of watchmaking for me was 50's-60's, pre quartz crisis. Better designs. Good video thank you Fed 👍🏻👍🏻
The other reason people don't buy luxury quartz watches is that most people don't give a shit about hyper-accuracy. If you're that concerned about knowing the PERFECT time, just look at your phone. The beauty of mechanical watches is the craftsmanship and artisanal value ... knowing that there's an incredible piece of engineering on your wrist that responds to your actions and movements. Mechanical movements have an innate beauty that quartz movements simply lack.
As a collector of mechanical watches, I disagree. People do buy luxury quartz watches. It’s not important for you, and that’s fine. Look at the quartz movements from Grand Seiko, they are assembled by a single watchmaker, very nicely decorated and have an intrinsic accuracy of +/-5 seconds per year. This is an amazing feat of engineering and technology. Nobody needs any wrist watch anymore since we have phones that tell the time, it s all about what we value for our wrist candy. By the way, the FP Journe Elegante (quartz) is one of the hottest FP Journes…..
@@richardscalero8865 I use an iPhone - Apple has their own network of about 15 strata 1 class network time servers, placed around the world to minimize latency and signal run times. Stratum 0 is an atomic clock, stratum 1 means, directly connected to a reference time, making iPhones stratum 2-time devices (stratum 2 is connected to a stratum 1 server via a network path) - iPhones (and other Apple products) sync up to this time servers every few hours so your iPhone is usually only a few thousand to a few hundreds of a second off from the atomic reference time.
@@koolpep Sure, some people buy luxury quartz watches, but I would contend that they do so primarily to get the brand prestige on their wrists at a cheaper price than the mechanical alternatives. I just don't believe that, were mechanical and quartz versions of watches sold at exactly the same price, people (other than total geeks) would opt for the quartz versions simply because they're more accurate. Luxury mechanical watches are plenty accurate enough for the vast majority of people, assuming you're not timing a space launch liftoff. And they look better, regardless of how nicely finished the Grand Seiko quartz movements are.
interesting comments about box and papers. i've thought the same but then think about reselling. then again, i saved on the purchase so i shouldn't expect a windfall.
I just sold a 21-year-old Rolex with box and papers for almost $7k (paid $5k in 2001). I think the collectors and the first-time buyer's lover box and papers, I myself won't buy a pre-owned watch without it either.
“Artisnal”? Which Omega and Rolex movements are made in that fashion? Very few automatics and mechanical movements are “artisanal”- that is to say, not created in a mechanical way or by machine.
Excellent non-elitist quartz comment. They may not be everyone’s choice and horological purists and snobs may spit up on them, but of course quartz has its place. Affordability for one. There are some very handsome quartz watches available in delightful price points. Movado and TAG to start. If someone is starting out or wants to add to one’s collection, many choices exist.
Fredrico is a nice guy, but honestly he can't read above a 9th grade level. I didn't say he's not a modern sophist, because he is, he just ain't reading that shiz because he's above it. That's why he gets an SKX. You can't bother a real man's man with snooty watches. I got an SKX because it is the MOD FREAKING CENTRAL for watches. Lots of mods, very cheap, like how the civic use to be. Love it. 4R Seiko Japan movement, sapphire crystal, japanese date, titanium pepsi bezel, solid links, emblem crown. I modded everything but the hands.
Hi Fed, you forgot to mention Spring Drive is another type of watches connoisseur don’t really care for. Even a Sellita and Orient movement are better than Spring Drive. It is essentially, an electronic watch.
What do you think about Rotary watches?…I ordered a Henley Automatic GB05380/04. Looks nice for the price because I have 5 kids and I ain’t spending no dammmm $1000+ 🤣🥹😭
Knowing you own a SKX shows me that you are a true watch guy and not a snob!
I just bought a SKX009, so I guess that makes me a true watch guy. 😁
Even though you're not wearing them you still know you have them and knowing that it's something you worked for right there is enjoyment!
Since I became a victim of a burglary, I would never buy a watch without paper. Just because it’s more likely to be a stolen watch. I will not support the thieves.
Good point. I was wondering recently why someone would not have box and papers for a 2 yr old watch.

Just about to purchase the new Seiko “SKX” GMT. Can’t wait.
It looks sick
Enjoy it Phil
I recently bought the orange version and love it. Like Fed…I will use my Seiko as a travel watch…the GMT function will be useful
Looks cool but again too much €€ for what u get. Enjoy!
The water resistance is suitable for it.
i love quartz to. My wife has a Cartier solar beat and i own a Seiko Astron solar titanium for its accuracy.Nothing better for grab and go!
I cannot fathom stopping my collection at 12 watches and I hate the prospect of selling any to make more space for a new one...
I have the Omega 'Bond' SMP 300M; yes, but is a quartz, but it is still class.

That Power Reserve watch SCREAMS 1990’s 😂

That’s why I’m gonna buy a grand seiko quartz!!
Well I would go for an automatic 4 sure
Never a quartz
Excellent video, very informative!
Omega does the X33 and Z33 the watch actually worn by astronauts these days. FP Journe makes the elegante a quartz watch and it’s super hot.
