Thailand also didn’t primarily consist of a coastline which colonizing powers could take advantage of with their navy, instead forcing infantry to trek into the dense jungles disrupting logistics, fighting etc. This allowed the Thai to take advantage of their uncoordinated/unprepared advances in the jungle much more effectively like the Vietnamese did in the Vietnam war.
Yet vietnam was colonized your point is faulty.

the Portuguese influence and legacy was long established in that region centuries before the Brits and French left their mark . initially acting as traders, pirates, missionaries and then mercenaries assisting both the Burmese and Thai kings in their regional wars. the Vietnamese language also uses Italics because it was easier for Portuguese missionaries to teach the gospel using their alphabet. it's a very monumental period of history as it was the first time people from that part of the world were exposed to European material culture , military technology and Catholicism. also, traders from Portugal first introduced certain foods from the new world that are now integral to the cuisines of South East Asia. not some in SEA thailand is the only country in the world that never been under any foreign occupation or rule
Thailand was colonized by Japan during WW2.
Occupied.
Yes we have lived in a world where why not colonization is the first query to an independent asian country.
The main reason for colonization was that the rulers of undeveloped nations or some leaders of states within fragmented nations like India, wanted the military strength of a European trading partner to help them to win wars against their indigenous neighbours. India being the best example. The subcontinent was a collection of states or kingdoms that were constantly at war. Even so this region was the economic superpower of the world, in the 14/15th centuries. The Europeans went cap in hand to Nawabs and Maharajas etc. to be allowed to trade with them. In exchange for access to the vast riches of the east, the European underdogs brought with them military technology the Indian rulers could hardly imagine. Empires were built by the aristocrats of Europe and the Royalty of some Indian kingdoms. The wars were beteen neighbouring Indian states and the rival European powers that had aligned to them. Thailand or Siam was a unified country with little or no internal insurrection.
British rule in India actually came about because the fragmented set of states were unified by some Indian rulers, assisted by the British East India Company's standing army, defeating Indian states assisted by the inferior army of the Dutch East India Company. They didn't land there and unleash the dogs of war against the population. It was a gradual process undertaken by the elites of Europe in combination with the elites of India. The Raj was just a natural progression as there was nobody to resist it.
It was so simple guys, if you couldn’t beat us like the Gurkhas you could have just asked to be chill with us, tut tut tut. Would have saved a lot of trouble lol.
