River mentions that the Doctor "has limits" when it comes to his regenerations. She doesn't even consider that he might have a new face because she believed that Eleven was his last possible regeneration -- not aware that he was given a new set of regenerations (in Time of the Doctor).
It is pretty much perfect. Capaldi's "Hello Sweetie kills me even watching it for the Nth time. And did you notice that he scanned River before giving her the sonic? Very useful later. Or earlier. Oh and somebody pointed out on another reaction blog that River carries a trowel. Just like her grandfather always did. I like to imagine that she sometimes visited him.
How I feel is that Steven Moffat fixed every complaint I had from the Eleventh Doctor's era by giving us the Twelfth Doctor's era, an I feel like series 9 including this xmas special made up for absolutely everything ever and every complaint in the future, and I feel like the Twelfth Doctor's era is my comfort pillow in life.
The look 12 gives River as she approaches the balcony is so magnificent. You can see 10 & 11 looking through those eyes. It's one of the many subtle 12th Doctor moments that is more than perfect.
I always cry through the last half of this. I don't care how many times I watch it, I always cry. Capaldi is wonderful. The writing is wonderful. 10 out of 10 for me.
Peter Capaldi became my favorite Doctor pretty quickly. His arc from, "Am I a good man?" To, "Always try to be nice but never fail to be kind!" Was spectacular! Marie-Clare, you should RUclips some of Peter's efforts to represent the Doctor and be a great role model for children. It'll make your heart soar.
Every time they say "and you've just been to Manhattan" my heart breaks about ten billion times and then when I've gotten over it he says hello sweetie, then when I've gotten over that they're at the singing towers of darillium (idk how to spell it). Then when I'm done with all that they get 24 years together😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
It's funny, when I first saw the name and blurb for this episode, I was like "what the hell? Why is River coming back? Her story's over, her Doctor was Eleven. What are they going to do with this?" Basically, I honestly didn't expect to like it. After watching the episode, Twelve and River together are probably my favorite. You said it; Capaldi absolutely _nails_ his performances here, and they sell the relationship so fucking well.
the thing is 10 and 11th were NOT her doctor, 12th was. They kept meeting out of order, THIS is where they meet properly for the first time, at the true end, where their time lines finally match
So many great emotional moments and a lot of great humour. I think my favourite "funny" scene is where the Doctor has to pretend he doesn't know the Tardis is bigger on the inside. I think the scene is also a touch sentimental, even if it is one of the show's biggest cliches. We are reminded of all those countless people, who were a mixture of confused and amazed as they walked through those doors for the first time. For thousands of years the Doctor had observed them, ever since Ian and Barbara had forced their way on board. Now the Doctor has his turn at being "amazed" .
She didn't know it was him because from her perspective, the 11th (really 12th) doctor was his final regeneration. To her, a new face was impossible, so she never considered the possibility. She knew all 12 faces.
Twelve is technically the first face in a whole new regeneration cycle granted to him by the Time Lords at Trenzalore. He shouldn't technically exist, so River has no reason to assume there would be another face to look out for.
I'm not as enthused by this episode as you are but it has grown on me a bit more over time. When I first watched it I think I was just seeing a Clara-shaped hole and not much else. :) Now, a good few years later, I can better appreciate it for what it is.
Okay. So, Haha, the scene where the Doctor goes into his own Tardis and is like, " my whole understanding of dimensional engineering has been TRANSFORMED." I was laughing the whole time. This episode is a gem.
I love the absurdity of casting a 6'8 giant to play essentially just a head. Greg Davies must have been in some uncomfortable positions to have his head sticking through a table and other things.
Over 500 subs now! Congratulations!!! Very sorry to hear you've been dealing with some haters. I guess it was inevitable they'd show up sooner or later. I think you're dealing with them in the right way. Just tell 'em where to go! I really liked this episode. Kept me enthralled all the way through, and was surprised at just how emotional it all ends up being. I know some folk find it a bit too silly but I can get onboard with a bit of silliness at times! Especially after how heavy Season 9 had got. As unspoilery as I can, I know you've seen "Time of the Doctor" where the limitation on the Doctor's regenerative abilities is explained and that had been imposed by the show long before the nu-who era. River Song just doesn't consider it possible for a Timelord to have been given a whole new lifecylcle. As far as she knows the Doctor can only change 12 times (the 10th Doctor used up 2!) and that's an absolute. She no more thinks the Doctor could have a face she doesn't know about than we would believe someone could live to 250. She's a victim of her own assumptions all the way through the episode. At least, until her heart finally explains it to her! I know a lot of fans like to go back and re-watch Silence in the library and Forest of the Dead again after this episode to see how well it ties up River's story.
I love him so much, he’s like the first three rolled in to one for me. This is a nice tie up of rivers timeline. I take it you watch Taskmaster, the new series starts soon.
Yes I enjoyed this one alot, it was good fun and another great Capaldi performance. If you want to "see" more of River Song there is always her new Big Finish audio adventures where she meets Doctors 4, 6, 7 and 8 (so far) and five incarnations of the Master!
It's amazing how 11 & River had tons of romantic chemistry and then 12 & River just straight up made them look like childish infatuation on both sides.
Doctor's fake "It's Bigger!!!" reaction, while being over the top, reminds me of the very first reaction: Ian Chesterton's. One who considers himself a man of science, facing a scientific impossibility.
After her night on Darillium River goes to the library to meet the 10th Doctor and her fate. I wont say if its the last time or not the Doctor sees River as confirming or denying would be a spoiler either way, but its not the last time River sees the Doctor in her timeline, as now she goes to the library with 10 (Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead), ends up 'saved' to the computer system, is temporarily pulled from there for the events on Trenzalore with the 11th (Name of the Doctor) which is where she says her final goodbye to the Doctor before 'fading' presumably forever. It's even more complicated if you include Big Finish! :)
It'll be cool if you did a couple of episodes from series 10, maybe do a poll and get people's favourite. It would be interesting with your new found love of 12 to see if you felt differently. I feel like series 10 is where he shined.
Love this episode and your reactions, as always and for such a young lady I love your attitude at the beginninng, nobody makes anyone watch but unfortunately some people just like to be nasty and live to try to hurt people!
Well, everyone else has explained why River doesn't suspect a new Doctor might exist, and why their last scene here is so significant, so I won't bother with any of that. I'll only say that, from what else you've said, you may have forgotten about the next special, The Return of Doctor Mysterio, which happens before Capaldi's final season begins. Are you sure you've watched that?
I know this comment is way late but NO.... She wouldn't clock that's the Doctor because in his last regeneration as the Doctor (Matt Smith), he was on his very LAST regeneration! Remember, a Timelord is given only 12 regeneration and after that he can die just like everybody else! (Old age of accident or murder)... He won't be coming back! So, River, knowing all this and not knowing the other TimeLords gifted him another 12 Regenerations, she assumes that he has to be one of the Regenerations since he has run out of lives. Hope this helps! (Although I'm sure by now you already know all this! 😉) 🤖🤓
So you're skipping series 10 altogether eh. Too fresh in your mind to do a rewatch? And what about that other Christmas special in between Series 9 and Series 10? "The Return of Doctor Mysterio"? (The only Doctor Who we got during 2016.) I'm very curious to see how forgiving or not you are to "Twice Upon a Time" now that you've seen all of Hartnell. Myself I have serious problems with it because of it's depiction of the 1st Doctor. But some other reactors have still been kind to it regardless. It's a tough episode for me because it has some great stuff and some really annoying stuff side by side.
My opinion about Once Upon a Time: 1- Capaldi and Bradley did the best they could with their characters and are in top form but i don't like the story cuz unlike with 10 or 11, his final episode doesn't feel an epic recap of his time. 2- Bradley did well but Moffat wrote the first Doctor wrong (i know he wanted to contrast old views with modern society) but 60's who is probably the most progressive era of the show 3- He had the oportunity to write a Tenth Planet sequel where 1 and 12 face of against mondasian Cybermen (creating an epic 3 parter) but he did Glass AI and Rusty (for some reason)

I never caught the trowel! OMG!
This is the one episode of Doctor Who that makes me cry every time

After this River goes to the library (hence the screwdriver) where she meets the Doctor without knowing him where she dies
River carries a trowel, just like her grandfather.
"I haven't laughed in a long time," The Doctor. Yeah. About 4.5 billion years...
River is Rory's daughter too. (T-T) She has his insecurities about love. Break my heart, why don't you.
Peter Capaldi became my favorite Doctor pretty quickly. His arc from, "Am I a good man?" To, "Always try to be nice but never fail to be kind!" Was spectacular! This episode is so good! And so emotional. I still cry watching this!!! 💜

Time to go to the library...

Will you be re-watching silence in the library?

Capaldi embodies The Doctor so perfectly.
So pleased you loved it. I Loved your reaction 💕 you were so engrossed in that. Again Capaldi shines 👏🤗
Okay. So, Haha, the scene where the Doctor goes into his own Tardis and is like, " my whole understanding of dimensional engineering has been TRANSFORMED." I was laughing the whole time. This episode is a gem.
Love the reactions and love the 12th Doctor
Thank you so much!

Hope you don't mind me saying, but that's a nice top you are wearing, it's a good look and your hair is lovely too. Nice reaction video.
Doctor's fake "It's Bigger!!!" reaction, while being over the top, reminds me of the very first reaction: Ian Chesterton's. One who considers himself a man of science, facing a scientific impossibility.
it was supposed to be over the top, like he said, now its my turn!

Hello sweetie
Who do you ship doctor with?rose or river
Yeah I don't like how River was extra stupid this episode in not recognizing him, but I guess to fit the story
