it IS "real life", but a very specific domain of it. the problem is that many people dont acknowledge and/or dont understand the significant differences between online actions and interactions and offline ones...
The real problem is the opposite... the Internet is real life but people treat it as it's not. So people believe they can get away with things they'll never do IRL.
One of the big problems, and there are many, is too many people feel their personal opinions are fact, or at least wish to impress upon others that their opinions are facts. This problem is compounded when it is a lie being spread around by many as though it is a fact. Is why, even though we have free speech, we are not free to commit slander or libel, for it illegal due to it can damage a person's life with the lie. I'm sure you have known the saying, "The pen it mightier than the sward." For words have real world real power. That goes for what anyone may say online about anything or anyone. The net is part of the real world. And what anyone may say or do in it, can have some very drastic real world consequences.

Public perception failing to factor in truth doesn't just apply to our culture, but every culture that was or will be. Sure, social media increases the amount of public figures (who are judged for things that are not always factual), but this issue existed far before the internet, and will likely follow to whatever communication channels we create next.
I would argue that at least local pockets of exception to this rule arise, but the very same problem means they don't necessarily get recognized for what they are since their images are subject to the same phenomenon, and the cheater strategy can arise anywhere, potentially causing an internal breakdown. You can have a very truth-oriented group or even organization, but once the stable core of dedicated and honest people is broken up or they pass away, confusion reigns supreme once again, and the reputation of the group potentially fails permanently.
The internet is unique due to its interactive nature. For instance, in addition to people's natural tendency to seek out information sources and other people they agree with, the way the algorithms are designed intentionally funnels people more examples of the sort of content they have shown a history of liking in the past. It rapidly becomes a self-perpetuating echo chamber that only tells people what they want to hear. 30 years ago if you were some idiot who thinks the earth is flat you were isolated and alone in that opinion and most of the time those around you would eventually convince you of its foolishness. Now in 2021 if you are an idiot who thinks the world is flat you go online and find the 10,000 other idiots who think it's flat all the media they have produced that "proves" it. You join their flat earth echo chamber reinforcing the fallacious belief. It's similar to a cult. Essentially they are brainwashing themselves. It's the year 2021 and we are witnessing a radical INCREASE rather than a decrease in the number of ignorant fools who think the Earth is flat. It is all fun and games when it's a flat earther we can laugh at, but it stops being funny when start to see things like 80% of one of your major political parties believing transparent and blatant lies being championed by Qanon cultists on the internet. It stops being funny when people start getting murdered by these idiots.

@RealQuarlie I'd say it depends on the POV. From my POV as a half white half Hispanic, seeing what's going on these days, it seems like it means "Hey let's not treat anyone differently due to color...it's ok if you're white" because so many companies give other races special privileges or hire more of them just because they are minorities. You should judge people on their character, not their race!
@RealQuarlie if saying things like "it's okay to be white" and "white lives matter" is racist, then saying things like "it's okay to be black" and "black lives matter" must also necessarily be racist. The pendulum swings both ways.
This is sort of an issue with the phrase. Saying "it's okay to be white" implies that people are being told otherwise, the way "black lives matter" implies that some people believe they don't. One of these arose because of a bad history of racism in the United States (which is what the world revolves around) - you can tell which one. This phrase of "it's okay to be white" is often said in relation to the topic of racism directed at non-white people, ie the black lives matter movement, which equates saying "black lives matter" with "it's not okay to be white" - THIS is the racist bit. saying that ethnic groups who are systemically discriminated against are against white people purely because awareness is being raised about said systemic discrimination is wrong, sews distrust and leads to hate brewing. it IS okay to be white. you do not need to repeat it like you're under attack for being white. nobody is coming after you for being white.
Definitely agree with the sentiment that we are too quick to judge people and act upon those judgements when really in most cases we don't know nearly enough about that person to know whether we're correct or not. I try to notice that and hold myself back from letting my potentially wrong judgements dictate how I behave, but I'm definitely not perfect at that

Facebook and Twitter blocking legit news articles. RUclips flagging videos for containing words like conspiracy... At this point we are *really* close to China's level of Internet censorship. Also I speculate that he also did these controversial statements so that he may indirectly separate himself from the game he created due to the backlash he got from 2014. People tend to judge people quickly without knowing that certain person's action outside social media. If you're open about anything, they'll cancel you. it's a dogwhistle thing. tl;dr it implies that people are being told it's _not_ okay to be white, and is usually said in response to stuff about ethnic minorities raising awareness about the racism they face. nobody is saying it's not ok to be white, and the reason it's said is an excuse for racism to hide behind, because they can just claim that you're racist for calling them out because "are you saying white lives DON'T matter?" - which nobody is.

I still don't see any truly compelling evidence of him not being transphobic. He literally said trans women aren't women. Now, before you come at me like "WELL HE'S RIGHT BIOLOGICALLY", he's technically right in a very specific way, but just saying that they aren't women replying to a post saying that they should be validated as women, is undeniably transphobic. To be fair tho, he did mourn and respect the death of Sophie, which is a trans woman back in Jan 31. It tweets like: "RIP you beautiful person! Thank you for your music, and you." So I guess it's enough to think of him less homophobic and transphobic.

The bigger problem is that people think the internet is real life.
it IS "real life", but a very specific domain of it. the problem is that many people dont acknowledge and/or dont understand the significant differences between online actions and interactions and offline ones...
The real problem is the opposite... the Internet is real life but people treat it as it's not. So people believe they can get away with things they'll never do IRL.
Communication has implications in real life you dingus
One of the big problems, and there are many, is too many people feel their personal opinions are fact, or at least wish to impress upon others that their opinions are facts. This problem is compounded when it is a lie being spread around by many as though it is a fact. Is why, even though we have free speech, we are not free to commit slander or libel, for it illegal due to it can damage a person's life with the lie.
I'm sure you have known the saying, "The pen it mightier than the sward." For words have real world real power. That goes for what anyone may say online about anything or anyone.

Yeah, it's completely unfair. It doesn't matter what is views are, let the man celebrate his game and legacy. He made many, many people's childhoods. Baring him from taking part in that... it's wrong, it's so wrong. And they weren't even really justified.
maybe if it was specifically said to all the people who went there, that they banned Notch, maybe people would've decided to pass and they'd understand why is he such a big part of minecraft
They could have just said that he couldn't do like a panel or something but barring him from the event seems kinda extreme

Saying "It's okay to be white" Isn't racist, and It's racist to say otherwise.
The pendulum swings both ways.
it’s racist in a certain context but bc if you say this in a discussion of BLM or police brutality it’s awful and racist

Too many recent gamedev graduates blaming a toxic industry for gatekeeping or the economy for a lack of available work. Maybe they only ever liked the 'idea' of making video games.
My videogame is the project I've been the most invested in ever.

@@PondScummer Yeah. The videogame industry is kinda fucked up in a lot of ways, especially in the big companies. There is also a huge sexism issue and it is an industry with some of the highest suicide rates. It also takes ages to make a game and deal with bugs while managing the design and programming

what did he say that was racist? what did he say that was homophobic? I understand the transphobia but in my opinion he just straight up didn't say anything homophobic or racist
@KS eat lead
I commend his ability to come back and apologize for a mistake and really enjoyed following him on Twitter for many years. But also, I got super annoyed when the drama in his tweets just wouldn't stop. I unfollowed him mainly cause of his habit of writing super cryptic stuff making it seem like he was all so clever, like he was asking for people to misunderstand him. That was quite possibly never his intention, but I sure don't need that in my life either.
Edit, a few months later: Just realized Notch has vocally supported QAnon in March 2019, which this video for some reason glanced over (even though tweets from around the same time are mentioned at 7:40, but it is then claimed transphobic tweets were the sole reason for MS' actions.) He even specifically said "I might be the most serious I've ever been" about QAnon... This should not have been excluded from such a video, whether it was ignorance or intention on the uploader's side.
QAnon thing was probably a joke. Though I wish he clarified.

Being a nazi is a very controversial view and I haven't met any nazis I'd consider good people
@@randomantguy24 key word is "can" in *"Can* you hold controversial ideas and be a good person?"
It doesn't mean that you definitely ARE a good person if you hold controversial ideas, it means you may or may not be. Most usually people with controversial statements aren't good, and that's why this quote is important. You may be a very good person and hold good ideas which have to be analyzed before judging. But the stupidity of masses makes you look bad FOR the masses, because/therefore the masses are the people who artificially make the ideas controversial.
He might have changed, but I haven't seen evidence for it. And if he hasn't decided to apologize for any transphobic comments he made, it's hard to believe he changed.
To be fair tho, he did mourn and respect the death of Sophie, which is a trans woman back in Jan 31. It tweets like: "RIP you beautiful person! Thank you for your music, and you." So I guess it's enough to think of him less homophobic and transphobic.

Love how many commenters are saying Notch is based. Right wing 14 year olds with too much time on their hands using "based" to encourage other people to make their horrendous takes public, making it seem like the takes aren't bad, he's just speaking his mind! Obviously it's based until someone who is left wing speaks their mind. And don't act like supporting LGBTQ+ and being LGBTQ+ is the majority. Sadly it's not. You just want to be oppressed so bad. We are the minority. You people with your bad takes and old mindsets are the majority, and continuing to oppress this minority.
In the United States those who support homosexuals are in the majority which is where most of the people who say being against it is based are from.
Crying about being an oppressed minority with no evidence while accusing others of wishing to be thought of as the oppressed minority seems a bit like the pot calling the kettle black, no?
Also explain why his takes are bad, don't just expect people to automatically agree with your premise.
Given how passionate you are about hating someone who disagrees with you politically, I would assume your from the states, where roughly half the population is right wing so maybe try having a conversation with someone that disagrees with you, rather then labeling them as an evil oppressor before you know more than the party they support.
