My cousin bought a Mustang Foxbody back when I was a teenager where he would sometimes let me drive it with him in the parking lot, sadly he passed away in the car when an express bus slammed into him at the highway, my aunt and the rest of my family told him to scrape the car but my uncle built it back from scratch, it still sits there in his garage. I really wished my uncle would have got rid of it but at times I feel like I want to drive that damn thing.
People who know nothing about the Shuto Expressway battles, Bayshore Route, or the Kanjo Loop will never understand the magic this anime produces. Yeah Initial D has a better storyline, but Japan during the 90s weren't only known for Touge/Downhill/Uphill battles on moutain passes. They took to the looping highways in tokyo, or in Osaka, driving up to 180mph, sometimes even higher. It was much more serious than just drifting corners. This is what the anime tried to replicate. The Z and Porsche 911 battle was an actual thing, they were both apart of the Mid Night club, and were considered the fastest, marking them legendary. Their influences still play a HUGE factor in the JDM car scene today, and even in the racing world. TLDR: there are more racing animes out there besides takumi, or the initial D universe. Comparing this anime to initial D simply will not work out for they are not the same style.

I dont think american cartoons can ever be as serious or cinematic as these not to mention the detail and realism is so much better in animes. Its crazy I am a car guy and these animes are so much more realistic than american car movies as well.

Initial d is about some guy sliding it around mountain roads to Eurobeat music. It is, quite honestly, a shounen anime. If you tried to describe it without using the words "car" or "race" you would end up having a description identical to that of naruto or one piece. It's about two guys fighting each other and seeing who is better and stronger, for your own pride, for the pride of your friends or just to prove a point. Wangan Midnight is nothing like that. It's an amazing anime that goes deep into the reasoning behind why we love cars and racing and how we devote our life to it. It has arcs devoted to each character and explores their personal lives, their motivations, their hopes, their fears. The racing is a method of self discovery and therapy. You race to find out the truth about yourself. You race to run away from the world you can't help but fail to fit in. Wangan Midnight is about people and their cars, not about who wins. It's not about the competition with your oponent, it's about the competition with yourself. It's not about whether you can be faster than the other guy, it's about whether you can be faster than yourself. Throughout this entire anime, not once does anybody win by being the fastest. There are only those who lost. And those who lost didn't lose to their opponent, they lost to themselves and their own feelings. The losers gave up because they couldn't step on the accelerator anymore. Because there was something or someone they cared about more than themselves and racing. These drivers grow up and find themselves through racing. it's deep and emotional. It's real. It's not some trumped up bullshit about eurobeat blasting at full volume while you're sliding downhill. Wangan Midnight changed my life. I am a car enthusiast and this anime is what directed my obsession. I used to live life day to day but now I have a goal, thanks to this anime. Through examples of the lives of the people shown in the anime, I was able to come up with my own answers, my own dreams and goals. If you go into this with memes in your head, you are going to hate it and think it's shit. But if you approach this as an adult, this might be one of the best and most profound anime you've ever seen.

There's the Evo Brothers, Keisuke and his Supra, Haruda who wants to make the fastest VG30, the car journalist who finds his old RX-7 to relive his youth, etc. These are actual story arcs and not just one episode for each character like Initial D.
This may not be "damn good!" as Initial D but please stop comparing this to Initial D. A lot of people tried to make this anime. Let's just try to embrace it. this series transcends a great anime it's like a timeless relic which embodies what cars are as a whole there will probably be nothing that even comes close to this series other than Initial D in regards to the best in the genre

we just recently got a mkiv '94 supra and the owner said that he was a big fan of this anime and inspired him to work hard for his dream supra. But he sold it for financial purposes. felt bad for the dude but still we got a legend in our garage
God I know I’m late but people don’t understand the roots of Japanese high way racing. It’s not about drifting, it’s racing in between traffic on some of nicest roads in the world that are loops. The Devil Z was a real and legendary car in Japan. The story wasn’t the same though. Stuff like the the Kanjo cemented the legacy of cars like the civic type r. No, not ricers like you kids who are trying to be cool call even stock automatic ones ricers, some of the newest engineering of the time was put into cars like the civic because that’s what everyone did, I’d argue highway loop racing was more popular in Japan before the drift boom that led to America and all the kids who can’t even drive who think everything in Japan is only about drifting

This has a very different feel to it than Initial D had...it feels like a much darker anime in the first episode than Initial D ever really was. The music seems to reflect that. Where Initial D's soundtrack pumped me up, this...it's just plain suspenseful. GIves me goosebumps.

Have you ever played Tokyo Xtreme Racer? It's based on this series. There's some cameos in it from Initial D and Wangan Midnight too. IMO, totally worth it. There isn't drift but there are other things. The cars actually have some importance. :)

Those 6 movies are great as well. They have hidden message for us, not to drive carelessly, hence Tsuchiya-san always said whenever he appears. Also, you might want to check Gakudori, it featured some racers too like Nobuteru Taniguchi.

Ive seen a lot of car movies, and car shows... and even animes. This is probably THE BEST 1st episode to any car show / anime. the way they introduce the protagonist, they idolize the hero car, they hide the villians face, they leave you in that suspense in the cliffhanger. GODDDD, this first episode is the sole reason I finished the whole thing

What I love about this anime is the small details it shows, alongside with the more in depth dive about tuning. I am a big fan of Initial D but I saw a lot of differences of the two. The only thing I didn't see on initial D is the more realistic and more details WM has. Also the characters, one Major flaw of initial d is that. TAKUMI NEVER LOST A RACE. yes bunta make him eat his impreza's dust but. In a proper 30 min. battle episode. we only saw "nearly" losing of takumi. if only takumi loses or crashes it's 86. There can be more room for better story writing. But overall. both are awesome animes. And pls. don't compare the two anime. It just doesn't make any sense comparing them.

I hate how people compare Wangan Midnight with Initial D. For those people they are completely different animes. They still got cars and they are racing with them but it's on a freeway around the city or smarter said, on the wangan. And some of them aren't Japanese only. A also want to mention that the first time Akio raced against Blackbird in the S30 Z 1 gen he just lost the grip on his front tires while trying to get in Porsche's lineline. Wangan Midnight: "I've got to spend more money on my car."
Don’t mind me, just rewatching my favorite anime.
Initial d is about some guy sliding it around mountain roads to Eurobeat music. It is, quite honestly, a shounen anime. If you tried to describe it without using the words "car" or "race" you would end up having a description identical to that of naruto or one piece. It's about two guys fighting each other and seeing who is better and stronger, for your own pride, for the pride of your friends or just to prove a point.
Wangan Midnight is nothing like that. It's an amazing anime that goes deep into the reasoning behind why we love cars and racing and how we devote our life to it. It has arcs devoted to each character and explores their personal lives, their motivations, their hopes, their fears. The racing is a method of self discovery and therapy. You race to find out the truth about yourself. You race to run away from the world you can't help but fail to fit in.
Wangan Midnight is about people and their cars, not about who wins. It's not about the competition with your oponent, it's about the competition with yourself. It's not about whether you can be faster than the other guy, it's about whether you can be faster than yourself. Throughout this entire anime, not once does anybody win by being the fastest. There are only those who lost. And those who lost didn't lose to their opponent, they lost to themselves and their own feelings. The losers gave up because they couldn't step on the accelerator anymore. Because there was something or someone they cared about more than themselves and racing. These drivers grow up and find themselves through racing. it's deep and emotional. It's real. It's not some trumped up bullshit about eurobeat blasting at full volume while you're sliding downhill.
Wangan Midnight changed my life. I am a car enthusiast and this anime is what directed my obsession. I used to live life day to day but now I have a goal, thanks to this anime. Through examples of the lives of the people shown in the anime, I was able to come up with my own answers, my own dreams and goals. If you go into this with memes in your head, you are going to hate it and think it's shit. But if you approach this as an adult, this might be one of the best and most profound anime you've ever seen.

@@turbocavalli No it's not. Only the first few episodes focus on that rivalry. Later on its new and different opponents with different motivations. There's the Evo Brothers, Keisuke and his Supra, Haruda who wants to make the fastest VG30, the car journalist who finds his old RX-7 to relive his youth, etc. These are actual story arcs and not just one episode for each character like Initial D.

This may not be "damn good!" as Initial D but please stop comparing this to Initial D. A lot of people tried to make this anime. Let's just try to embrace it. It's just a small difference between drifting and highway racing. Let's just support this anime and try to watch it till the end. Hell you might even like this anime.
Ok, agree with the "try to support it" thing, but don't agree with the comparison between drifting and highway racing at all. Even a bad driver can drive fast on a highway, everyone, but not everyone at all can drive fast in the hills and definitely not race. And yeah, I tried...terrible. But gotta admit, I liked the Wangan movie
David S. That’s true, but it also takes skill do drive fast on the highway. Maybe not as much as going thru the canyons, but look at all the people crashing their cars on the highway while tryin to “race” or even street straight line racing. Just enjoy it man. If you like cars or are an enthusiast, you can enjoy these anime’s.

this series transcends a great anime it's like a timeless relic which embodies what cars are as a whole there will probably be nothing that even comes close to this series other than Initial D in regards to the best in the genre

we just recently got a mkiv '94 supra and the owner said that he was a big fan of this anime and inspired him to work hard for his dream supra. But he sold it for financial purposes. felt bad for the dude but still we got a legend in our garage
God I know I’m late but people don’t understand the roots of Japanese high way racing. It’s not about drifting, it’s racing in between traffic on some of nicest roads in the world that are loops. The Devil Z was a real and legendary car in Japan. The story wasn’t the same though. Stuff like the the Kanjo cemented the legacy of cars like the civic type r.

This has a very different feel to it than Initial D had...it feels like a much darker anime in the first episode than Initial D ever really was. The music seems to reflect that. Where Initial D's soundtrack pumped me up, this...it's just plain suspenseful. GIves me goosebumps.

Have you ever played Tokyo Xtreme Racer? It's based on this series. There's some cameos in it from Initial D and Wangan Midnight too.
IMO, totally worth it. There isn't drift but there are other things. The cars actually have some importance. :)

Those 6 movies are great as well. They have hidden message for us, not to drive carelessly, hence Tsuchiya-san always said whenever he appears. Also, you might want to check Gakudori, it featured some racers too like Nobuteru Taniguchi.

Everyone should download all these videos before they have to be taken down. The initial d videos got taken down by funimation because they realized they could make money selling it on their website like hulu is doing
What funimation doesn't realise is they'll make even more money making stages 5 and final from initial D in English dubbing.

This is probably THE BEST 1st episode to any car show / anime.
the way they introduce the protagonist, they idolize the hero car, they hide the villians face, they leave you in that suspense in the cliffhanger. GODDDD, this first episode is the sole reason I finished the whole thing

What I love about this anime is the small details it shows, alongside with the more in depth dive about tuning. I am a big fan of Initial D but I saw a lot of differences of the two. The only thing I didn't see on initial D is the more realistic and more details WM has. Also the characters, one Major flaw of initial d is that. TAKUMI NEVER LOST A RACE. yes bunta make him eat his impreza's dust but. In a proper 30 min. battle episode. we only saw "nearly" losing of takumi. if only takumi loses or crashes it's 86. There can be more room for better story writing. But overall. both are awesome animes. And pls. don't compare the two anime. It just doesn't make any sense comparing them.
But both are very few Car Enthusiast anime i respect both on it's own because no more good car enthusiasts anime anymore that related to real life

Manga about motorsports and cars are a rare gem, especially with good storytelling. The authors even done extensive research and consulting professional drivers and tuners before drawing the first page.

To those people who thinks wangan midnight requires no skill, try "DRIVING" a car, tune it to 300hp+, then speed through traffic and enter a highway corner without losing too much speed, (I play wmmt5dx+ and experienced it, its harder than I thought).

I hate how people compare Wangan Midnight with Initial D. For those people they are completely different animes. They still got cars and they are racing with them but it's on a freeway around the city or smarter said, on the wangan. And some of them aren't Japanese only. A also want to mention that the first time Akio raced against Blackbird in the S30 Z 1 gen he just lost the grip on his front tires while trying to get in Porsche's lineline. I just wanted to mention it. Everyone knows it but i wanted to.
