Wonderful performance of a great piece. George Szell's premiere performance with the Cleveland in 1965 is superb, and perhaps more subtle, but this one sounds like one unbroken line. The metrics are odd but perfect. Perhaps Dutilleux was coming to terms with the sense of space and color in works like those of the late great American composer Earle Brown which are also conceived in terms of contrasting weights.
