I’m partial to “Comfort and Joy”, the Justice League animated series Christmas special. The idea of one alien who grew up on Earth with his Christmas traditions inviting another alien over for his first Christmas on earth is just... really great.
I live in the south-America, and the craziest thing I always feel about Christmas movies is the dissonance of the climate. We don't have snow here, it's over 40C outside! While we usually prefer to spend the holiday outside, eating barbecue with a cold beer, people like the north-American Chrismas imagery, and use artificial pine as Chrismtas trees and eat an american style supper.
Sounds very similar to Australia. It's something of a tradition to be wandering the shops trying to find the best way to cool down while "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" plays in the background followed by a song about how great snow is.
I'm from Argentina and we only celebrate Christmas Eve, which is basically an excuse to eat "asado" (barbecue) in family, get drunk, throw fireworks at 12 AM, and eat winter food mixed with ice cream. Basically, a pre-New Years Eve celebration when we do the same lol.
This was a really nice essay, man. As someone who is a Christian, Jesus is a big reason why I celebrate the season, but as you said, the Nativity story isn't just about worshipping Jesus, it's a moral about human kindness and togetherness, which I think symbolises the idea of Christmas in a much more universal way. It's a message which a lot of Christians, I think, seem to forget. It's not about our differences, it's about joining together and celebrating a truly wonderful time of year, with friends and family. I also really like your idea that the meaning of Christmas is different to every one of us. I love all of my family's old traditions. I think it's those little things, leading up to the big day, that I actually love the most about Christmas!
10:20 FRANK: And at the Festivus dinner you gather your family around and tell them all the ways they have disappointed you over the past year. KRAMER: And is there a tree? FRANK: No. Instead there's a pole. Requires no decoration. I find tinsel distracting.
Reverend Swanson i just watched it 5 minutes ago and loved it! it's up there with last christmas from ducktales (2017) and blackadders christmas carol.
As a devout Christian, I loved this video and thought it was spot-on. While I observe all of the religious elements of the holiday and find them to be good and meaningful, I know that the reason I LOVE the Christmas season is because of all the traditions and rituals, many of which are completely secular. This was beautiful. And I'm also happy that you called out every single one of my favorite Christmas movies. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Sounds like your Christmases are wonderful, the kind they put in movies. I never had the best relationship with my family and now my parents don't talk to me at all, so I was pretty indifferent to Christmas and still associate it with a lot of stressful and traumatic memories. But in the past couple of years I've spent Christmas with my friends, I'm starting to enjoy the holiday for once.
I love all these ideas and that we're allowed to embrace and experience them all because I agree that Christmas is a holiday meant to create and celebrate the community we share with each other. You're doing exactly the same thing here Patrick, fostering community over love and cinema and stories through your work, and for that I am grateful to be not only a subscriber but a part of this community! Merry Christmas to you :D
Thank you very much Patrick for this video. It is great to see you talking about yourself, about your habits and Christmas traditions. As a long-time subscriber I find it amazing when RUclipsrs allow themselves to show some personality, share some moments of their personal life thus adding a small touch of human identity over a public image they tend to create. I enjoy your content and now I felt like I had a conversation with an old friend. Thank you for bringing this holiday spirit :) Merry Christmas!
The whole 'year pushback' thing is being really exaggerated. It's really only being moved a few months later than when it would air originally. Also, it gives them more time to work on the season to hopefully make it better. So it's really not a bad thing, in my opinion.
The Hateful Eight is the best Christmas western. There's snow everywhere and it ends with two of the main characters overcoming their differences and hanging up decorations.
You put into words so well something I’ve been thinking about recently. In my home country we don’t celebrate Christmas, but New Year, but will all the same traditions like presents, Santa Claus, holiday magic etc. we used to have this tradition and every year I would look forward to it. The last 5-6 years however, we have an annual Christmas trip abroad with the fam and as much as I enjoy it and I don’t wanna sound bratty about the kind of privilege I have, I really just want my rituals back. I find myself sad at this time of year because every time we get thrown out of our comfort zone (we are in Sri Lanka right now for example), we give presents way before the trip or give no presents at all, and there is no real holiday to look forward to. I realize now that I want to have a ritual celebration next year, something like the old times.
My favorite movie Santa is definitely Snake Pliskin aka Kurt Russell in Christmas Chronicle. Dude gets arrested in Chicago and ends up playing a rock concert in the holding cell with the other occupants as backup singers and band. It's pretty amazing.
“On every world, wherever people are, in the deepest part of the winter, at the exact midpoint, everybody stops, and turns, and hugs, as if to say "Well done. Well done, everyone! We're halfway out of the dark."” Merry Christmas, Patrick.
Oh my gosh we had the same Bing Crosby cassette and I loved that Christmas in Killarney song. Didn't know where or what "Killarney" was as a kid, but it sounded magical (possibly because it sounded phonetically similar to Narnia??)
It's good to see you mention Die Hard. Many people think that calling such a violent movie a Christmas movie is silly but it does meet your criterion of Christmas being an essential part of the narrative. The ultimate battle between the good guy and the top bad guy ended in John McClane's favour because he was able to surprise Hans by appearing to be unarmed when he actually had a gun taped to his upper back. Conveniently finding a massive amount of tape laying around in July would have stretched the audience's suspension of disbelief but it's easily believable for it to happen at Christmas. The same thing happens in the sequel when McClane just happens to grab an icicle to stab one of the bad guys in the eye.
My mom told me Santa wasn't real when I was in a hot tub at the YMCA when I was a wee lad, and so everyone in the gym saw me walk out balling and questioning everything. So Christmas to me is realizing my mom needs to work on "There's a time and place for everything".
I'm watching this video on the couch, in a near vegatative state, at my Grandma's house. Merry Christmas Patrick, and I can't wait to see what you have in store for 2019!
Pat. As an Irish man, I completely understand your mother's frustration with that song. If you're ever in Dublin on Christmas we have a pint waiting for you at the bar. Bring the whole family.
My family and I watch Die Hard on Christmas Eve and A Christmas Story on repeat (like TNT used to do) on Christmas Day. Since high school, my Mom and I watch the Supernatural christmas episode the night I come home. It's one of my favorite traditions
Other people: Let's all sit together and watch say, The Nightmare Before Christmas while drinking Eggnog. Patrick: I'm going to work my ass off just to get a special Christmas short movie out the door.
If you're looking for a Christmas western, the Australian movie "The Proposition" is set in the lead-up to Christmas. It's one of those movies "set at Christmas time."
For me, the top five animated Christmas Episodes are: 1) Batman the Animated Series: "Christmas with The Joker". 2) X-men "Have Yourself a Morlock Little Christmas". 3) Family Guy "A Very Special Family Guy Freakin' Christmas"/ "Road to the North Pole" 4) Bobs's Burgers "The Last Gingerbread House on the Left" 5) American Dad "For Whom the Sleigh Bell Tolls" Top 5 Doctor Who Christmas Episodes: 1) A Christmas Carol 2) Last Christmas 3) The Snowmen 4) The Christmas Invasion 5) Runaway Bride

I cannot begin to express how happy I am that you brought up Abeds's Christmas. It's one of the most outstanding episodes of TV in the 21st century. I bawl like a baby by the end, every time. And yes, it's a travesty there is no Doctor Who Xmas special this year!
Small correction, Christmas isn't thousands of years old, but hundreds of years old. It won't be thousands of years old until the 24th century (cue appropriate TNG reference here).

My favorite Christmas tradition: finding some poor sucker who thinks they are a serious Star Wars fan and introducing them to the Star Wars Holiday Special.
I don't reallt have rituals in my house for christmas other than getting the tree and decorating it. The closest thing I have is watching whatever movie one of us got on Christmas day.
I thought Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas was so sad it made me *cry* uncontrollably. Don't like to rewatch it for that reason (plus I don't like animation) but this video really got me in the Christmas spirit in August!
Hogfather is still my favorite movie/show/thing/book ABOUT Christmas; it's universal story about meaning of rituals and about faith, without ever saying the words "christmas/santa klaus" or having any Christian imagery in it. It is brilliant, philosophical and absolutely hilarious. I recommend it as a good Christmas movie if you have not seen it yet. Happy Hogswatch, Mr. Willems.
Disappointed that Krampus is relegated to a couple out of context clips in this video. In my mind, that is the only example I've encountered of a true Christmas horror movie in that it legitimately explores what the holiday is about through a horror lens.
I like santa slays and the the futurama christmas specials, that bring people together, with murderous evil santas. The chrismas charol rip offs are good too, and have a mythology. And the river song special which is about a reunion celebration essentially.
I enjoy giving gifts, listening to Christmas songs and playing them,(violinist) and watching my favorite movies! Having stated that, I hate Christmas in July ! There is only one reason that they put out Christmas movies and it hasn't anything to do with spreading the spirit. It's all commercialism! They want to boost sales in a slow part of the season. I used to work in the retail business and by September, we were putting out Halloween stuff. By October, it was full blown Christmas decorations all over the store and I would hear the same phrase from everyone that entered the store, " already with the Christmas stuff?". As far as the Dr. Who Christmas special, you have Chris Chibnal and Jodie Whittaker to thank for that.
Thank you for making such wonderful and thought provoking video essays! A Merry Christmas to you and your family (your parents are adorable!) Patrick (H) Willems! I'm stoked for your next year of content!
Merry Christmas, Patrick! Enjoy your long-built rituals while you can! ;-) Having a wife and three kids, I will let you know that this throws your traditions off balance big time. Not only do we now have three families (my parents are divorced) and three different traditions to cater to and get around during the holiday time, we also have to build new ones for our kids that are different from "sitting in a car all the time and doing weird things that at least one parent is shaking his head about"... :-D Fun times. I hope we won't scar them too badly. ;-)
If you're going to post about the importance of Die Hard, you should maybe, you know, watch Die Hard first! John shoots Hans in the shoulder not the face. That's why he's alive to fall off of the Nakatomi plaza minutes later.
@@TheMogul23 Yeah, I know that! He falls over and then John removes the watch Ellis bought Holly from her hand so he falls to his death. This is similar to the sequence in the novel that the movie is based off of, except the ending in the novel is more tragic. I was saying that if it was truly Christmas, Gruber would've got his brains blasted out in one shot and his corpse would fall out the window. Y'know, some Christmas Bullseye Bullets.
Merry Christmas to you!! What a lovely video. Also glad someone declares xmas their favourite time of the year as opposed to halloween..which is great n all but cmon, its Christmas!
DUDE I DID NOT EXPECT YOU TO BRING UP THAT COMMUNITY EPISODE! IT'S MY FAVORITE!

Its the appropriated celebration of the winter solstice. Christmas in summer just feels wrong

I, too, am furious about the Doctor Who Christmas special being rescheduled. It seems so pointless to change the date, and yet, they did it anyways.
and pushed back the next season back a year I'm so furious
The whole 'year pushback' thing is being really exaggerated. It's really only being moved a few months later than when it would air originally. Also, it gives them more time to work on the season to hopefully make it better. So it's really not a bad thing, in my opinion.
Ultra Nerd are you talking about there being no dr who christmas special this year? because that used to be/still is? one of my christmas traditions.
Time is relative.
Tobias Kuhn on the other hand, only assholes care

Coldest...? There are two hemispheres, you know that, right? It's summer in the other, you know, half of the world.
And Christmas originated in the northern hemisphere. The tradition is heavily linked to winter solstice celebrations
@@partylikeits1066 I think you missed the point of the video.
partylikeits1066 But the first Christmas in Bethlehem was in a place that while in the northern hemisphere, doesn’t get particularly cold.

It deserves much more recognition as a Christmas movie then it gets.
9:37 omg what a foreshadowing of the "The Nice Guys" video of 2021 with the " eat nerf " part that you explained ... it's crazy
Woah there is not enough alcohol in this video!!
11:23 intentional mirror match cut of the Santa hat?
Great video Patrick thank you very much! Your cadence is just naturally instructive.

I started to spend all of Christmas anxious and worn out and eager to get the fucking thing done with. I was a teenager when I decided I hated Christmas, a corporate holiday that was a waste of my time and money.
This video changed my mind. Did you just give me a Christmas Carol moment? Because I think I just had a Christmas Carol moment.

I’ve literally waited years for someone to talk about Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas!
Thank you mate and happy holidays 🎄
Merry Christmas :) loved this take. Very warm and genuine.
My definition of a "Christmas movie" is a movie I only feel comfortable watching during the holiday season. I cannot imagain watching "Home Alone" or "A Christmas Carol" in June. But I CAN imagine watching Die Hard in June.
Merry Christmas Patrick. And thank you.
There isn't a Dr Who special BUT there is a really great Christmas Book - Twelve Angels Weeping - that BBC released, in which 12 iconic villains each get a Christmas tale, I'd recommend it to fill the gap!

I liked how you started off with the Shane Black movies, but missed mentioning of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
I was watching Star Trek when Captain Kirk said "Now." and then the notification for this video popped up. Kinda freaky, but kinda cool.
A Muppet Christmas Carol is THE best rendition of A Christmas Carol. Come at me.

Merry Christmas Patrick! Thanks for your beautiful and thoughtful content
Merry Christmas Pat, thank you for everything

Merry Christmas, Patrick! Enjoy your long-built rituals while you can! ;-) Having a wife and three kids, I will let you know that this throws your traditions off balance big time. Not only do we now have three families (my parents are divorced) and three different traditions to cater to and get around during the holiday time, we also have to build new ones for our kids that are different from "sitting in a car all the time and doing weird things that at least one parent is shaking his head about"... :-D Fun times. I hope we won't scar them too badly. ;-)
The time when you are among your loved once is always like Christmas for me🤗
Christmas movies mean John McClane shooting Hans Gruber between the eyes. . .
Frosty14748 but he doesnt shoot him between the eyes...
John gives Hans the present of bullets on Christmas.
Now I have a machine gun... ho... ho... ho...
Merry Christmas to you!! What a lovely video. Also glad someone declares xmas their favourite time of the year as opposed to halloween..which is great n all but cmon, its Christmas!
Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas is legit my annual Christmas movie.
it's funny that I'm watching this in late June, as far away from christmas as possible
