    European countries need to be able to defend itself, while remaining a steadfast defender and member of NATO! - We cannot rely solely on 4 year security periods depending on US elections. Its a huge opportunity for a weapon arms industry and thousands of internal jobs too, instead of the EU sending money to the US arms industry.

      With Donald Trump the american century ends any way. Defense is only one aspect.
      Europe must trust its own recipe and move forward. It's not impossible, there's good news too. The Dutch and German armies merged seamlessly. Lastly, the Dutch 38th Light Brigade was transferred to the German 10th tank division. We trust each other and have pooled our armies together, no matter who is in command. German soldiers would defend the Netherlands and vice versa.

      I think they know exactly what this excersise is.
      Last time they did it they provoked the Ukraine conflict by have 40 000 troops practicing how to attack Russia on all of its borders in March of 2021. Meanwhile Zelinski publicly declared they would take back Crimea militarily and declared they would look to join NATO.
      I said it then, almost a year before the war. But nobody believed that Russia would interpret that as provoking a conflict. It's not like they had 100 000 blanks being fired at them.
      This time let's double the size of the event. Likely have some time of event on Feb 22, and declare something...and see if Russia responds and shoots at NATO. Then we can still say NATO is a defence alliance and still...not quite lie....

    As an American veteran, I am aware of NATO's capabilities. Its strength is not dependent on the US, although the US has historically provided a great deal of technology and management of the NATO force. Today, however, the NATO countries are well-equipped, well-trained, and more than capable of repelling any Russian aggression in the European theatre. Although, if the US were to remove itself from NATO, there would be serious financial and administrative strain on the alliance, NATO, although smaller than Russia in terms of number of military units, more than makes up for this difference in their level of training, skill, weapons, technology and determination of its leaders, combatants, and support personnel, far more than any threat Russia could pose in current times, or in the foreseeable future, IMHO.

      To be clear, I am not advocating the US leave NATO. That would be a very foolish thing to do! However, I am also not counting out the resolve of current NATO members, or their abilities to deal with Russia without the US, should it come to that, although the fight would be far more difficult. Much of Russia's army consists of very young and inexperienced conscripts who are forced to serve. Sadly, they make up most of Russian soldier body count in their war with Ukraine, even though Ukraine forces are extremely limited. Ukraine is holding strong because they have the desire to fight to save their country. In the event Russia would be foolish enough to challenge NATO, I believe NATO forces would prevail, even without the US. To the a-holes replying to my comment, the flak is always greatest when over the target.

      @duhni4551 5 месяцев назад

      What troops? EU region alone, which is not the whole Europe, has tad larger military than USA. It is twice the size Russia and China can send against it together. Let that sink in. You do the mistake that you think European militaries are in weak condition. They are not if you compare them to other nations, they are only in weak condition if you look at it through Western military potential, meaning what they could be. If you think that Russia has even 1% chance against Europe, you are the delusional one here.

    Whilst continued military cooperation with the USA (Canada and Turkey also) is important, I believe that the time has come for a successor to NATO that is uniquely made up of European countries. That means, no more Canada and Turkey as well as the USA. We cannot be dictated to by whatever whimsical idea a former president and future presidential candidate may or may not think. Europe also needs to look more to building our own military equipment and fighter aircraft. We have seen how the USA has been reluctant for European countries to hand over F16 jets to the Ukrainian Air Force which highlighted a difference in defence policy as well as in regional thinking. President Macron of France amongst some others have advocated something along these lines for years. It is time to consider it and we Europeans are also quite wrong to think that countries on another continent should automatically come to our defence. That may have made sense previously, but seemingly, not any more.

How many times will Europeans try to argue that “some economies are smaller” as if percentages didn’t exist or as if percentages of GDP were always what was being discussed? Subsidize your defense per the terms you agreed to or get out. no nation on earth can be trully "isolationist" in this modern world. Trade is global, every nation relies on others in some way, even if the US decided it really was going to cut itself off millions of jobs would immediately vanish, food would likely become a critical issue, they literally cant cut themselves off from the internet, or global financial systems they'd go belly up in a week etc. And as history has shown, its getting easier and easier to cause actual harm to a country whether its ww1 submarines torpedoing US merchant ships, to the sneak attack on Pearl to the 9/11 attacks.
      The US cant just go "NOPE we're not here today" and expect to go untouched and flourish. They'd go downhill fast, probably get attacked by terror adversaries and still want help dealing with that while handing earth on a platter to china, russia and possibly india as well
