I’ve always had great admiration for his knowledge and passion. He messed up a few years ago by making an inappropriate comment and put himself into disgrace. I don’t approve of what he said, but all these years on I feel sad that it finished his career. He fucked up, but it shouldn’t wipe him out. This is the first thing I’ve watched him for years and I still think he’s a brilliant historian with a passion I love and share.
In the minute that is skipped over: "So far, Henry, who rather disliked direct confrontation, had lacked the backbone with which to challenge his councilors head-on. Now Wolsey provided the backbone for him. This is the document with which Wolsey began to free Henry from the thrall of his councilors. It's a signed bill, granting a Lincolnshire rectory, in itself, its nothing. The Devil is in the rubric, instructing the Chancellor to make the grant on the authority of the King's signature alone with no need for authentication by the Course of the Seals. This was to undermine the whole basis of the council's control of royal patronage, and Warham objected. But Wolsey, who presented the document in-person, smoothly responded that, 'such was the King's will'. This was unanswerable, and all Warham could do was to add an acid little note here, right at the bottom of the document. "Ut acer wit dictus dominus Wolsey", So said the aforementioned Master Wolsey. Wolsey had now shown that he could give Henry what Henry wanted, and what Henry wanted was war. (Forgive me if my Latin spelling is off) With Wolsey supplying the means, all Henry lacked was the opportunity. It soon came when Pope Julius II and King Louis XII of France went to war over the Italian city states ruled by the Papacy. Invoking the spiritual weapons of the church, Julius excommunicated Louis and formed a Holy League of sympathetic countries to wage a crusade against infidel France." And then it picks up again.
Love these documentaries, but HORRORS each time precious writings are handled without care for their continued preservation. PLEASE, care for the documents with great efforts and no bare hands!
David Starkey's knowledge of this period in history is unmatched his work will educate generations to come a very impressive legacy so those who tried to cancel him failed miserably
On what grounds do you make that proclamation? There are several living experts in the Tudor period, Starkey among them for certain. Some are quietly employed by, or recently retired from, various universities and actively research, publish, and teach aspects of Tudor history and culture at an extremely high level-they just happen not to have striven for a TV career and so are largely unknown by the general public. So settle down with the toadying encomium to ‘King Starkey’. It’s unbecoming.
As an historian, and Tudor authority, Dr. Starkey has no equal. One sees his touch in every aspect of these videos, from the stirring music to the cinematography, to his matchless delivery of his scrupulous research, which brings these historical figures to startlingly vivid life.

What did he say?
In the minute that is skipped over:
"So far, Henry, who rather disliked direct confrontation, had lacked the backbone with which to challenge his councilors head-on.
(Forgive me if my Latin spelling is off)
With Wolsey supplying the means, all Henry lacked was the opportunity. It soon came when Pope Julius II and King Louis XII of France went to war over the Italian city states ruled by the Papacy. Invoking the spiritual weapons of the church, Julius excommunicated Louis and formed a Holy League of sympathetic countries to wage a crusade against infidel France."
And then it picks up again.
Brilliant, thank you for this! :)
I didn't want fans to miss out. And, you're welcome!
Thank you for this!
You're welcome, anytime.
It's good to see you back on you tube
Love this!
Love these documentaries, but HORRORS each time precious writings are handled without care for their continued preservation. PLEASE, care for the documents with great efforts and no bare hands!
I recently heard its better with bare hands. Gloves reduce feel and might cause rougher handling.
Bloody good show!
@@EyeByBrian You failed miserably
@@russellfoster2400 Yet another baseless proclamation?
@@EyeByBrian David has great talent for tv,he can definitely capture an audience that’s why he’s so successful in his tv career.
Why did they try? I’m not even sure what he did “wrong?” I don’t understand cancel culture…🤔
Great series, thanks for posting this, please give us more content.
As an historian, and Tudor authority, Dr. Starkey has no equal. One sees his touch in every aspect of these videos, from the stirring music to the cinematography, to his matchless delivery of his scrupulous research, which brings these historical figures
to startlingly vivid life.
Geoffrey Elton? Suzannah Lipscombe? David Haigh? Anthony Fletcher? All fascinating Tudor historians.
@@emmam-rr8qe We all have those intellectuals we are most partial to. I believe delivery might have something to do with the partiality, as well.
Nice cliffhanger ending. Really enjoyed that, thanks.
Thanks so much for posting.
I love listening to this documentary, its so interesting.
Thanks - do love your lectures.
Erasmus.... brilliant part. Lovely film on my favouritest of kings.
