MH4G/MH4U: Practicing Guard Points (Charge Blade)

    Not a tutorial at all, just a random video of me practicing Guard Points with the charge blade. The “point” means “moment” not pts. as in earning points.
    I cover them properly in my CB tutorial: • MH4G/MH4U: Charge Blad...
    For the most part you do not need guard+ skills. If you do go full out GP, it’s only going to work on certain monsters like Diablos, Monoblos, Molten Tigrex, Zinogre, etc. that have charge attacks or big single attacks that you can guard and follow up with an attack.
    Anyway hope this helps! To see masterful usage of GP see this guy: / @魔魚のチャージアックスちゃんねる

      @Nyan Gatetoh 900+ hrs in and I still didnt get moments like these, well except for this one time I fought apex rajang again (I basically hunt those things on a daily basis) he was limping and out of apex, toppled him, he got back up and turned apex, and without a wystone I hit it with my sword and it deflected off of it (because apex, and I hit its legs), and with that one deflect I killed it

    There's one thing that no one seems to have mentioned :
    Shield boost actually indicate when you can guard point.
    Let me give an example.
    While using elemental CB, there'll sometimes be light emitted from the shield after you've got the boost.
    At time when you can guard point, the shield glows.
    With that, I found that I can guard point after 3rd of blade combo, side hop attack, R+X after blade attack, axe to shield animation, etc.
    Pretty useful in practicing CB guard point as you can still know when you can do it even if forgotten and without needing to check it online

      +Oreolistening? Oreosure? you might be hittin R first which gives you no guard point. you need to hit x first. it's very slight but if you hit R first it will be guard to axe which has no moment for a guard point.

      *****
      If by guard point you mean the stun and other effects, yes only for charge blade. If you mean a point during/after an attack wherein guard is activated then no. Gunlance has those too. SnS might, but I don't know offhand. Just no point usually, since you can also just block normally--the only reason you use GP specifically instead of block normally with CB is because the shield is weaker otherwise and you gain stun effects.

      When the axe's charged the shield becomes that of a lance, so it's not really weak.

      Not really, actually!

    • @Art2D2
      @Art2D2 9 лет назад +24

      Sharpness goes down from blocking in normal circumstances of holding the shield to block. But this isn't normal blocking. It's a special technique that happens to block.... kinda like that special feature from the superman dodge frames where you're temporarily invincible.

    • @familydude-lq7ec
      @familydude-lq7ec 9 лет назад +2

      Why exactly would sharpness matter if you were going to block anyway? This rewards accuracy and defense with powerful KO ability. Of course, the one thing regular guarding has an advantage over is that it's a sure block, whereas missing a GP can potentially kill you.

    • @ax3l0lrat3r
      @ax3l0lrat3r 9 лет назад +2

      Wait wait, it reduced sharpness for me....
      Oh wait, the impact phials do that. It's negligible though

    • @lupvirga
      @lupvirga 9 лет назад +3

      Norbles Xarelon it only reduces sharpness because it counts as a hit if the Phials are loaded into the shield. However, if you GP with a non boosted shield then you won't lose sharpness.

    Guard Points are a big help but if you miss the morph by a few split seconds you will surely cart, if you don't have good armor or are fighting say a Rajang and get hit by his 'Kamehameha'. The timing is key when it comes to using GP. Practice is a good thing to do if you are new to the concept.

    • @Buri13
      @Buri13 9 лет назад +2

      If you have your shield charged, you will do an ultra as your third special attack. However, if you press (or spam) back tilt on the circlepad and x, it will do the super attack instead.

    • @oak3684
      @oak3684 9 лет назад +1

      OK, I tried it out. So it's basically like a cancel move that goes from Ultra into Super.

      Thanks a lot for the explanation, Buri13.

  • @MrSineofX
    @MrSineofX 9 лет назад +2

    Thanks for this great video on showing GPs. Your videos are really amazing and a great insight to the world of Monster Hunter!
    I have been experimenting around with it and there are many possible ways that you can land it from how I see things. So let me make this post serve as both a question and a small tip. So first, the question. How do you perform the Super right after the GP? I have tried many ways to do this but can't possibly do it. I think I'm just missing something that's right under my nose so any help would be appreciated! Edit: Is it done by GP>X cancel to X+A?
    Now the tip part
    To perform GP you have R+X being the most basic one and R from axe mode going back to sword and shield mode. This downright blocks things, yeah but only for a brief period.
    I've found out that you can further increase that chance to perform it, you can add that into a combo making a combo a much more safer approach. For instance, every second and third X attack of the sword and shield has your shield right in front of you. Hence, it is able to be a GP. What makes this move great is that it's possible to do with:
    X>X(GP)>X(GP)>morph(GP)>morph(GP)
    alternatives can be sidestepping after second or third slash or morphing
    Sure, you can go ahead tell me that there's not much of a point to this since morphing to axe and vice versa is a much more faster GP as it is more instant. However, having that many GPs queued up might just save your butt against a frenzied/enraged monster. You can also see this as an alternative to what gaijin hunter has showed us where you press X and then morph to attain a better rate of GPing. Just more in "middle of combat" type of sense. Why is this so? Well basically, with every X attack you perform, there is a gap. Those gaps are the startup frames of your attacks. They can also be used to indicate how long it takes you to be able to perform a GP. Basically, just more key frames for you to help yourself do a GP.
    Another neat one I found is when you have your weapon out and you roll forward then pressing X
    Forward+B(roll)>X(GP)>morph(GP)>morph(GP)
    alternatives can be sidestepping after morphing
    This let's you perform an upward slash(second attack for the X combo). You can take advantage of this move as a gap closer + invulnerability + GP. It's a pretty good one and I've used it a lot.
    I hope I helped out a bit and please do correct me if I am mistaken somewhere.

    Hi, Gaijin!
    I really love your tutorials. They are awesome :)
    Well, two things:
    1) I used to miss the Super EAD (instead Ultra EAD), but a friend discovered something really nice: you can change in menu>options>orientation and set to "type 2". Now, it doesn't matter where you are looking, to change from ultra to super press down on circle pad (even if you character is looking down too) :) voi lá!
    2) regular blocks seems to work like GP. Is it true? With normal blocks I can eventually stun the monster too (with shield boost, of course)?
    In you tutorial you said that there's no GP from idle sword to axe (R+X), because the hunter pulls from his back, mas you're using it in this video. I'm confused now: R+X idle (not X, then R+X) works for GP to?
    Thanks!
    (Sorry for my English, I'm brazilian)

      GPs are different than regular blocking since:
      1. You won't lose sharpness
      2. You won't consume stamina
      3. You can counter attack
      If the axe's charged then the shield will burst dealing extra damage (not sure if ko or the same as the cb's phials).

      superleetninja if you check out his video on CB tutorial it has a better explanation but I will do my best, during some animations the hunter will put the shield in front of them and gain the guard ability of a lance instead of a great sword, with the shield charged it's even more powerful. If you do the shield charge move at the end you will see the hunter put the shield in front of them, I don't use guard point (that's what it's called) but I have blocked a brachy and a pink rathian from doing a leap attack and poison tail respectively. Isn't Guard+2 "Greatly increases the likelihood of standing your ground when blocking an attack." and not a guarantee guts ( I thought it was used to be called survival) which prevents fainting only one time, and not everytime u get OHKO with hp at 60%

    By idle does that mean not moving at all? Or can you still do it if you're running? Cuz I noticed you were actually moving a couple times when you GPed. Or did you just let go of the C-pad before you get hit?
    Useful video by the way :)

    So do you only get the defensive benefits from the Shield Boost by using gp, or do normal blocks also improve with the boost?

    What's the difference between a normal block and a GP?

    • @gaijinhunter
      @gaijinhunter  9 лет назад +5

      You can do a super burst immediately following it, or evade, it has slightly higher blocking capability as a normal block, it charges your phials, and no boost mode it does a free blast of damage to the monster

    • @NekoBatyx
      @NekoBatyx 9 лет назад

    What happened at 1:43 ? He seems to input GP (since CB already morphed into axe mode when he gets up at 1:46) but he can't block the attack. Are the first few frames not count as GP? I myself have this issue a lot :(

    • @sawlol2011
      @sawlol2011 3 года назад

      1 year late reply.
      At 1:43 he most likely used a regular morph to axe attack. You need to either press X and R at the same time or X then press R after a slight delay to get gp frames on a morph attack. If you accidentally press R then followed by X you won't get any GP frames. (You can also use the kick action button, typically the START button or the touch pad, to do morph attack with gp frames.)
      You can visually see the difference because the morph attack with gp has longer animation time compared to the gp-less morph attack.

    Looking at the defensive side of the Guard Points. Is the Guard Point a stronger guard than a regular one? Let's say I have no Guard skills and the shield is charged, so my shield has now the properties of a Lance (Guard +1); if I defend using a Guard Point would it be equivalent to idk Guard +1,5 for example?

    Whow how do you go from GP to Super/Ultra burst? When I do it, i usually do x+a it'll do a shield stab, then x+a again to super/ultra. In your vids, it just goes from GP to Super/Ultra.

    • @SureyD

      I think X+A from a guard can trigger Super/Ultra Burst. At least that's what the CB video said.

    Thank you for the video for it has helped me immensely. However, I can't seem to know when to pull back the c-stick and press x to cancel the ultra. I believe you'd understand to why I can't simply just keep charging to get ultra and fail which would result in me charging the blade again. Again, thank you.

    At 5:33 I saw that you reached a full charge, then reloaded to get phials. But then you did a split sec mode switch to axe and spent your phials into red super very quickly (sorry if I got the name wrong). How did you do that? I have to switch to axe, press x+a, then press r during the last charge attack to spend my phials into a red super.

      Definitely not, but the advantage of a bow is being able to deal damage from a safer range reliably when a monster is NOT trapped/stunned/paralyzed.
