I figured I would start this new series: Irish Poetry Saturday! I’ll be reading from the book “1000 Years of Irish Poetry”, edited by Kathleen Hoagland.
If you have any thoughts about the poems, feel free to leave a comment. 👍
I'm not sure what I believe but it's a comforting thought, to me, that we live on through nature. That first ancient poem is really lovely. This will be quite the journey.
I agree, it really is a comforting thought. I’m looking forward to making more of these videos! 😃
I just found your channel and I'm grateful to connect with you and others through poetry here on booktube. 🙌
Hello! I’m grateful as well! It’s a wonderful community and you have a great channel.
This will be an education for me, I look forward to it.
And for me too!
Hi Joshua. I’m very interested in Irish literature in general. There are many Irish poets that I love, but they are all 20th-21st Century poets. I don’t really know anything about Irish poetry from long ago.I do have The Penguin Book of Irish Poetry, which goes all the way back to the earliest examples of Irish verse, but I haven’t explored the ancient poems.
Hey Pat, thanks for telling me this. I would love to hear which modern Irish poets are your favourites. I have only read bits of William Butler Yeats and Seamus Heaney.
I have heard of The Penguin Book of Irish Poetry. There must have been a video talking about it on Steve’s channel. If it ever shows up in a used book store, or on Amazon for a cheap price, I will certainly snatch it up!
@@joshuacreboreads I did four Poetry Thursday videos on Irish poets for the Irish Readathon in March. I love Yeats and Seamus Heaney. I also love Louis (pronounced “Louey”😊) MacNeice. Padraig OTuama is a contemporary favorite. You might like his podcast, Poetry Unbound. He also has a book by the same name based on the podcast in which he discusses individual poems of other great poets in brief essays. I like Patrick Kavanagh and Thomas Kinsella too. Also Paul Muldoon. Oscar Wilde and James Joyce have some poetry too, though that’s not what they’re known for.
I will check out that podcast! And your poetry Thursday videos too. Funny, I have a copy of Oscar Wilde and have read some of his poetry, but I entirely forgot he was an Irish author! 😅
Thanks, Pat.
“I Am” is the name of God…
“God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’””
Exodus 3:14
Interesting connection! Yes, the more I read it, the more it seems to be a kind of religious poem.
