- This is a lesson covering the basic right hand technique of Stroke Style Fretless Banjo, using the Phil Rice Banjo Method of 1858 as a basis for demonstration. I talk about right hand setup, "Strikes", and demonstrate "Juba", a simple early banjo song. Materials may be viewed at The Banjo Clubhouse at www.milfordmusic.com.

Helpful, thank you for your tutorial videos. Much needed.
I’m a clawhammer guy and, to me, the rudiments of striking the strings are the same. Thanks for making this video.
I am so happy to see you doing tutorial videos. Thanks!
I really appreciate you going through this for us. Great banjo instruction. thank you
Outstanding
Thanks for the lesson !
I assume Rice didn't use a remote to get the hand in the right position.
Thank you for the video i kept tryna figure out what minstrel stroke was an by watching people i got my self doing the strike an a half exactly like you showed but now i fully understand whats goin on now. Thank you brother.
Glad it was helpful
Nice! Thanks!
Starting to learn banjo, first actual instrument for me. I feel like an uncoordinated baffoon even on the easy stuff, here's hoping I can get my hands to do the right thing at the right time.
I also have a fretless, but it sounds strange when I try those basic chords you go through.
What tuning are you in?

Just curious about your banjo strings? They sound great! What kind are they and where to buy?

Awesome
I lost the remote
I hear banjos were fretless until 1880 or so.So why does a 1858 book show a fretted banjo.Just a slip up? Your opinion.
No, fretless banjos had been around in the 1850's. Note the Ashborn model. The Stroke style was going out of vogue by that time....1880
That early stroke material surely wasn't as good as it is now. Sorry, I can't help myself you know.
I guess it is that it is now.
