My father was a drug addict and didn't teach me many things growing up, but he did teach me to draw. He had a philosophy about drawing women: draw her hair like you want to run your fingers through it with each pencil stroke, draw her skin like you want to caress it, draw her hands extra carefully like you want to hold them one day, and lastly, draw her face as if it's going to be the only face you're going to wake up to for the rest of you life.

Juan, You're a brilliant teacher and artist. I sat down drawing side by side with my 10 year-old on two of your tutorials. After just two tutorials her techniques showed massive improvement. Methodical guidance yet organic...brilliant. Thanks for sharing your amazing talent. Wish I could give you two thumbs up.

You are an amazing teacher. I've wanted to start drawing manga, and people have been telling me to learn how to draw proportions and anatomy first, and I have to say you have helped me out a bunch. Now that I have mastered the female face, i can move onto the male, and finally practice drawing manga. I'm going to impress some people on school :D

You got excellent visual skills and your perception of how the female face should look, is very interesting. I was doing something similar to yours but using a grid and then, using mathematical precision, to get the exact portrait that shows realism and also by breaking down and then, building up to get all the details and the shading the right way. I like the fact that you were committed to executing the facial structure including the hair, flawlessly.

  • @crankybrainiac

I did a couple of photorealistic pictures copyng a photo with som plus by my side, some years ago, I give it to a girl, and never tried to draw again, until now.
I remember to have spent days drawing 2 or 3 hours in some details (like symmetry)
The interesting part is that I have never studied drawing or art or even tried before. Now I know it is hard to do, surely with technics and training I'll do it in just a half hour like you.
Thank you for your time to teach us.

It's always fascinating to watch such transformations. Really good tutorial, most likely applicable for "real" paper sketching (with the exception of some manipulations with e-rubber "undo's"). Certainly, I often met approach to mark the eyes first of all, but if this method also works, i'm not going to cavil at. Good luck
