You truly had to be there as an anime fan in 2007/08 while Code Geass was airing. Unlike most anime, Code Geass was an original production so there was NO manga/source material for people to read ahead, everyone was in the dark and nervously waited week to week.
It was essentially the Game of Thrones of anime at the time 😂 everyone was watching, waiting on weekly eps, all the leaks & theories, forum discussions etc. And the damn season 1 cliffhanger that left fans waiting for over a year!! 😩 This show was truly a landmark moment in anime when it came to fanbase community, online discussions and the collective viewing experience.

@@5Geass its the Napoleonic Wars lol. Napoleon leads a revolution across Europe to kick the royalty away and bring democracy. The British Royal family escapes to Edinburgh but then they are betrayed by the people there, you can find that as the humiliation of Edinburgh in the Code Geass Wiki. Then the Royal Family escapes to the new world and makes their new capital in Pendragon. Thats the birth of the Holy Britannian Empire. About Europe though, after the successfull revolution Napoleon tries to become the Emperor of Europe himself after ironicly kicking the last emperor out of Europe. They behead Napoleon and the EU you know in the anime is also born there (though some stuff like WW1 still happens, probably in an alt history way) EDIT: Also yeah America tries to gain independence just like they did irl, but it fails.

It should have been mentioned as well?
Japan was conquered by the Holy Empire of Britannia because Japan had a rare resource called Sakuradite (サクラダイト) that powers the majority of the world's their technology and Knightmare Frames. Before Japan got conquered and colonized in 2010 by Britannia and renamed to Area 11. Japan tried to create a 3 way standoff between the 3 Superpowers of the world the Chinese Federation, the United Republic of Europia or EU, and finally the Holy Empire of Britannia. Since Japan is the only nation that controls, produces, and have monopoly of 70% of the world's Sakuradite (サクラダイト) resources and supply. Because Japan produces large amounts of Sakuradite (サクラダイト) out of everyone else they enjoyed some economic prosperity. After Britannia conquered all or some of Indochina Peninsula renaming it to Area 10 in 2009. In that same year of 2009 Japan started to worry about their neutrality and Independence, as well with other issues that Britannia started. Japan wanted to make some deals & polices to get support and help from the other 2 superpowers the Chinese Federation and the EU. So Japan can still stay independent and prevent Britannia from eyeing and ruling Japan. Both the Chinese Federation & EU and their allies try to blockade Britannia's ports and apply economic sanctions on her. With the blockades and economic sanctions they were hoping to deter Britannia from such hostile actions against Japan. But it pretty much fails in response to this actions Britannia just expands her military might and intelligence the other 2 superpowers does the same. In the year 2010 the 98th Emperor of Britannia Charles zi Britannia tricks the other 2 superpowers by placing large amounts of military forces in Africa and India. They also placed a naval battle fleet in the Indian Ocean along deploying their flagship the Great Britannia. With the other 2 Superpowers and the world distracted in Africa, India, and the Indian Ocean. It left the Pacific unmonitored and undefended leaving Japan wide open for an invasion and attack by the Holy Empire of Britannia. In the end Japan was no match against the Holy Empire of Britannia's military and their new weapons of war the Knightmare Frame. Japan lost it's freedom, independence, culture, traditions, sovereignty, and etc. It got renamed to Area 11 and the citizens of the once proud nation of Japan were forced to be called Elevens.

Code Geass was my favorite series back when I watched it the first time. Though that place was later taken by Fate/Zero and then again by Madoka Magica, it is still one of my favorite series of all time. Really the show asks the audience a question: When you have a broken system that is actively oppressing people, which is the best method to change it? Lelouch is the revolutionary that seeks to overthrow the system, while Suzaku tries to do the right thing by working within the system to change it. Ultimately, the series declares that both paths are essentially the same, because the one trying to work within the system has to make sacrifices along the way in order to play by the rules which are twisted and contorted by corruption. Neither side has any moral high ground to speak of.

Among so many anime I've watched, Code Geass remains the undisputable classic and masterpiece of its own genre thanks to its contest story plot and superb characterisation. Never had I gone through such intense and conflicting emotions when watching anime. Heck, season 1 was great. Season 2 broke me so badly. Code Geass is that one anime that I will NEVER ask for a sequel and only watch it once because of how amazing the story has etched into my memory, I just want to preserve my fondest and finest memory of Code Geass.
Saber? Sakura? Yasss, I'll be throwing C.C in as well XD

When finished watching code geass, I have to say it was a solid show (shit sometimes cough. . . cat episode), but holy shit is the ending for code geass incredible no matter how many shows I watched even outside of anime nothing came close to the ending at season 2. The ending is the best ending in a work of fiction (imo), and it was worth all the "filler" (I just skipped some episodes) in the show.

The show doesn't start in 2017 AD, it starts in 2017 ATB (Ascension Throne Britannia). Even if these calenders aligned that would only go to show how far removed the alternate history is. It is difficult to imagine how an Empire could possibly even stand for 2017 years and not go through radical cultural evolution.

  • @moonstonepearl21

The series operates on a different calendar system, so it's actually only in the 1960s if I remember correctly. As far as Britannia being America, the Britannian royal family is actually the British royal family that fled to America and made that their motherland. So, they are kind of Britain. It's been a while since I saw these details, but unless I misremembered, that's the gist of it.
Yea the hoard of people in Zero outfits was top ridiculousness. My suspension of disbelief was overstretched with that one. They really should have come up with another solution there.

My friend insisted on watching the show with me when I mentioned a RUclipsr I really like watching "Overanalyzing Anime" revealed he's going to start a series on Code Geass, which I've never seen and only was familiar with a couple character designs, and that one gif of Jeremiah flipping his shit at being called "orange boy" which made its rounds as a reaction image.
And damn, dude, I'm not even five minutes in this video and I'm agreeing with pretty much all of your early takes. We're about halfway through R2 right now (and spring break just started so i gotta wait to watch more 😭) and I'm absolutely hooked, but the first few episodes, "mid" was the EXACT word that came to my mind too, and Episode 8 was ALSO when I finally gave real investment in the show.
Also, your skit about Lelouches exile is fucking hilarious, and HOT TAKE the second OP of season 1 is the only one in the show so far that's worthy of being in the show it's in, they fr dropped OP #3 for a grand total of two episodes 💀
Addition: the head cannon i came up with while watching with said friend (cuz I had the same reaction) is that Canada MUST have had to have conquered the US with their mecs and compensating for their little bro complex they went all in for Britainnia, which is why all the Brittanians in Area 11 are so gay and racist: a perfect synthesis between the two North American Anglophonic Nations.
Addition addition: I was cracking the exact same jokes about the years when they were ever shown or mentioned, it's really fun to see others having the same kind of fun I do when reacting to things.
Addition addition addition: 6:55 glad to see we agree about the OP 😂😂

Some of the situations may seem silly, but I chalk it up to Lelouch having a sense of humor. The scenario where EVERYONE puts on a zero costume makes sense in context; while it seems ridiculous that they'd honor the deal and let everyone dressed as Zero go into exile, rejecting their zone of Japan... What was Suzaku gonna do, order another Euphie style massacre to stop them?

There are some changes in the series that are applied in the movie, but are somewhat forgiving, but I strongly urge you to watch it, as it does give some closure to the series. (At least for me it did..)

Not really wrong, it is just that history is different in the Code Geass world.
Two of the major differences are:
    1) The American Revolution failed because Benjamin Franklin turned traitor.
    2) Napoleon's invasion of Britain succeeded, causing the British Royal family, among other prominent figures, to retreat to the American colonies.
The land that irl is Britain is part of the Code Geass world's E.U., one of the three world superpowers.
So, Britannia, in a way, IS Britain, just located in the Americas.

If you didn't catch it, It's called Britannia because the American civil war failed and Napolean won the battle of Trafalgar. This kicked off a series of events which led to Queen Elizabeth III being forced to flee Britain with a noble, Sir Ricardo von Britannia. They ran to the colonies of America and created a new British empire, taking the Name Britannia after the new king, because Ricardo and Elizabeth ended up marrying. A lot of the history on this is actually found in the show but it is never really given focus, like we see Lelouch in class and you can hear the teacher in the background giving a history lesson, and that is our exposition for the history of Britannia.

5:30 I haven't gotten too deep into the lore, but I think the Empire originated in Britain, but got kicked out somehow. I know in one of the early episodes a topic is "The Disgrace of the homeland" and how Pendragon is a "new capital".
Reading between the lines a bit, at some point in history Britain got royally screwed by an enemy (probably the EU?) And left the island unlivable or threatened enough it made sense to take advantage of the strategically safer American Continent as a new core of the Empire.

Always watch the old animes. They’re great for a reason. Though you can’t see the beauty of Cowboy Bebop somehow, so I’m really not surprised. Also, seriously? Code Geass immediately grabs you because of STRONG CHARACTERS. Sure, it doesn’t have the sci-fi, cyberpunk beauty of Akira or Ghost in the Shell, but it’s not like those things don’t have flaws too. Ghost in the Shell (film) is a COMPLETE FUCKING RIPOFF of William Gibson’s novel Neuromancer. But no, let’s not talk about that for some reason.
You should respect a show for its great qualities and what it does well instead of comparing it to things that it’s not. It’s not trying to have the aesthetic beauty of Akira/Ghost in the Shell. But even still, I DO actually think that the aesthetics, animation style, character designs, world, etc. of Code Geass are all very interesting. And sure, Code Geass uses a lot of cliches/tropes, but they also do that in order to provide further commentary on those anime tropes - including how the Code Geass ending is a revisiting of the Evangelion ending, teases the Eva ending, then Lelouch rejects it, and plays around with further commentary of what it would be like to take a different path than the human instrumentality project. Which further undermines the themes of Evangelion in a compelling way. It’s just great writing.

I just watched this and it's very good, A tier for me. The only issues I had were the fan service, the way the show handled Lelouche's parents and his mother's death, and many characters being not useful to the show but taking up screen time. I really love the aesthetic, soundtracks, storylines with the government/japan, and the descent to madness/evil of Lelouch.

I just love the story of code geass and how the whole concept is set upon. Lelouch become the one he hated the most in last but with different goals, his friend that guy with all powerful mech ( forgot his name) becomes the successor of the only thing he hated his whole life about. Both of their philosophy clashing into one another, one fighting for his sister, mother and himself alonside the japenese people for the japenese people and on the other side, one's fighting for the country, his land and people. Both of their ways of approaching things were different, lelouch wants to change with the concept of zero and that guy with super cool mech wants to change things the more organised way. And then comes the princess and lelouch's sister being the princess. Sure do this anime gives the feeling of a chess board being played and if you're a chess fan ( I've literally played chess as far as I know in my life. My asian dad just slammed the chess board and taught me and quite frankly I enjoyed chess) you're going to like this anime quite a lot
