If you're lucky, once or twice along the way in life your path weaves with someone else who reminds you of all the reasons you used to be happy...even if it's a brief encounter, it lasts forever. a truly magnificent movie ending.
Damn you! LOL! Why did I read this comment right now? I'm in the middle of writing an apology letter from one such encounter because, at the time of being immature and thus all-knowing, I nuked my encounter from orbit. Either way, you have concisely stated what I couldn't put into the proper words. Cheers and Thank you!
I've always said that Lost in Translation is like watching/experiencing someone else's vacation and the ending is like seeing that vacation end and feeling sad that it's over.
The reason why you may have to be around 30 to appreciate this film is that by 30, you will have experienced the quiet agony of loneliness and isolation in this world. So when you happen to meet somebody you connect with intimately during that time, its understated beauty is magical.... as seen throughout this movie.... if your in your teens... wait for the world to kick the fuck out of you for a decade and come back to this movie.... then you'll get it.
+ironfistfreddie im 27and this is one of my favorit movies, 1st tiem i saw dindt apreciate it much 2nd time i feeled in love and i was only 22-23... you can realate to this movie in so many levels even to HER story not just "Bob"

On the flip side, sometimes it's about instant sparks, the mad kiss in less than 30 min. of meeting. Either way, emotions, true passion, maybe love, something real. Not this after 3 dates a bj is required, but I kinda only like him/her a bit.
I saw this film about five hours after I was sacked from a dead end job, but I was pretty upset. When I walked out from the cinema, I was like, fuck that job, became a cab driver a week later, life has been peachy since, thanks Bob Harris!
i love their connection to each other..Bill Murray felt young again with her while she found wisdom and comfort from his life experience and even tho it wasn't a romantic relationship..their love and respect to each other was deep.
Adonis Sesson he wanted her but he respected her that is why he didn’t use her for one night stand. He slept with that idiotic singer lady instead. To him Scarlet character meant something more. My man take on it
I never cared for this film when I was younger, not that I didn't like it, in fact, I always loved the soundtrack, actors, location.. It just didn't speak to me, but as I got older, it really did, and I can fully appreciate it, I really love the story, every part of it. I think for those who don't like it, maybe, give it time, experience more life and try it again. You might come around. I did.
+Robin Malik Well, it was when it came out, idk, late teens, 17, 18, that's when I first saw it, and didn't care for it. It wasn't until a few years ago, maybe 3 or 4 years ago, when I came around to it, 27, 28, somewhere about there. Idk when it came out exactly, but it was right around when I got out of high school, and I am 30 years old now, so about 10 years, if that helps.
+Jennifer York +100. I also didn't quite get the film the first time I watched it (~20). After gaining more life experience and world travels (~28) and upon another re-watch, this film has become one of my favorites.
same here when I was young it was a OK movie just BC I like the soundtrack Japan and the actors, when I saw it at 22-23yrs I felt a huge connection in so many ways it become one of my favorit movies, I ve seen so many times now i recently watch it again and its funny how in the beguining I feel more conected to "scarlet" story and as I get older I feel more connections not just to "scarlet" but also "bill" story in more ways (and I'm only 27 turning 28)
I met a girl online in Mexico and went to see her a few times, the last time I visited I knew it was going to be over even though we loved each other. I had one day left in her hometown and was not going to see her that day but she showed up at my hotel and wanted to spend the day with me. It was an amazing and heartbreaking day, we cried a bit, kissed and said goodbye, it was so hard to walk away but we had to. Most amazing and heartbreaking experience of my life, I relive parts of it when I watch this movie, I'll never forget the experience!
The feeling of complete isolation as you watch a strange city fade away and with it someone that explained what exactly you're doing on this planet without having to say anything was captured absolutely perfectly in this movie. Hits way too close. Happy memories and such deep regrets.
My all time favorite! I even travel the last year to all the locations in Japan (with my savings of one year) just to be in the same scenery that Bob and Charlotte did!
watched this movie translated to Spanish and he said "i want you to know i will never forget you, okay? (ok.) and after the kiss he repeats "will never forget you" then say bye.
I have always been amazed at the insights of Sophia Koppola - just 26 years of age when she wrote and directed this film. I am astounded a young woman sees so deeply into the psyche of the middle-aged male and what he finds irresistible and meaningful in such a relationship. I will always love this film.
This is one of the most powerful endings ever. If there were real words whispered, I hope we never know. This is what makes it so powerful because each of us have our own idea based off our personal relationship ups and downs in life!
Bill is a nice and funny guy. Throughout this whole movie he’s the coolest most entertaining character. But his smile at the end just felt like the first time he was happy and satisfied in this movie. This is one of the best filmed scenes I’ve ever seen
the meeting of two different people, who have coincided for a short time in their lives, in a strange place for them. Displaced by a kind of vital jet lag, they decide to keep each other company. They look at each other, talk, laugh, argue, sing, drink, run, hug, kiss and... say goodbye, probably forever. But those few days will remain forever in their memories. Sad and hopeful.
I wanted to go to Japan pretty much my whole life (i'm 19) and this has always been my favourite movie since i first saw it a few years ago. In December I finally went to Japan and visited Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto and absolutely loved every minute of it, can't wait to go back in a few years hopefully. I watched Lost in Translation on the plane there as well as the way back, and while the plane was departing from Tokyo I was listening to Just Like Honey. Everytime I look at my photos from Japan I just want to go back in time and relive that lol
same bro i traveled solo to japan last year when i was 18 and also watched the film en route to tokyo :) walked around shinjuku at night with the soundtrack on my headphones (went heavy on the mbv and are you awake tracks) wish i could experience this again
@@joshuatoh It's so surreal man, can't wait to go back lol. One night I was getting the taxi back to my hotel in Shinjuku after a long day, with the lost in translation playlist on and as I woke up right on the same street as this scene, the same song 'Girls' was playing through my headphones I couldn't believe it lol
You need to have a certain level of maturity and life experience to appreciate this movie, especially the ending. This movie proves that a soundtrack can be every bit as powerful as the cinematography. It's very clear that Bob and Charlotte are soulmates, and Bob is merely reassuring Charlotte that they'll be together again even though he has to leave.
This movie’s ending was like waking up from the most delicious nap. “Just like Honey” was perfect ending to that nap. Even though you don’t want the sweet flavor to end deep down all you can do is appreciate the taste while it lasts.
Does anyone else love this movie and don't really know why? Does this scene hurt you with delightful pathos? You love the scene because it hurts so much.

Thank you Sophia. If you have ever been an expat or on long business trip anywhere and had this experience it is hard to describe to friends lovers and family.
This makes me miss everyone I've ever gotten even remotely close with. All the classmates, teachers, colleagues, kids you met during summer camps and holidays at you grandma's .... God I loved all those people
I've been there in his shoes so many times... You connect with someone somewhere around the world, and then either one of you has to leave. Nobody dares to push because of life itself. The only thing that remains is that warm feeling you're left with after you say goodbye, and the thoughts of what it could have been, but it never will.
This film conveys things that i've tried to communicate to my friends for years but haven't been able to get across. That lonely, spaced out detachment to reality, the feeling as if nothing out there is really listening to you, nobody to talk to who can understand, sometimes nobody who cares, that leaves you starving to be heard with no answer. Funny enough, it seems like Japan is a place that brews that feeling when you're there alone, maybe because of the language barrier or cultural differences. We call it the "japan feeling" And then there's the ending. When you have to leave a place or person that you have a special connection with that started to feel like home, but really isn't. Then you go back to your real home, where that time in history, is something you can't reflect on or share with anyone else, because they weren't THERE. You can't build on it either because that time is gone and has slipped through your fingers... for now. And so, until next time, if there is a next time, it becomes your secret
The sadness and happiness in the same time, powerful scene. Its hard to make this so real, who had experience like this will understand what its all about...
Absolutely beautiful film, one of my all time favorites. It’s often said you have to be older to understand it, but I was 19 years old and knew that what bill whispered into scarlet’s ear, wasn’t meant for us to hear. I guess my life had a rough start, according to the comments.
I choose to believe that what he said to her, is none of our business. Whatever made him say 'alright' and had her leaving with a smile, is because they found a settlement to their relationship, in. what ever form that is. It's one of the few times I've watched a movie and felt the ambiguity not only works, but is essential to the movie and their relationship.
I like this movie....I'm conservative I've been in the military I've been to Japan I currently live in japan. I like this movie a lot. It's not for everyone but it's a movie about being lost and depressed and finding some one that fills that void and it does a good job of it.
I saw this movie back then when i was in college circa 2007, now i'm hit 35. Life really surprise me how lonely when you at your thirties and fell connected to the movie at least from Bill perspective
Thats right! And it work with me! I travel the last year to almost all the locations in Tokyo an Kyoto just to be in the same places that Bob and Charlotte did! I returned home completely in love with Japan!
I was absolutely mesmerized by this film, and I was moved by it like few others. My wife wasn't too pleased, though, when it took me a few moments to snap out of it after the film had ended and the theater was empty except for the two of us. Lol. Ahhh, life. Memories of things that were, and that might have been....peace, all.
I like how she´s standing on her toes while they hug. I only realised that BM is quite a tall guy when he performed at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens back in 2018. Through the years I have had a number of possible phrases he may have whispered in her ear. It depends on my phychological state.
I saw this movie when I was a senior in high school. It was towards the end of school, summer vacation was just around the corner and all my friends were talking about college the following year. Now every time I see this movie, especially the ending it reminds me of that moment in time. Don't get me wrong, I still love the movie, but I just get extremely sad when the "just like honey" song kicks in and you see all the street signs as he's heading back towards the airport. I'm just keeping thinking about my life back in high school when ever I see this movie. I miss those days sooo much.
I remember watching this exact scene before I have to leave a long stay in Lithuania to return to Newark. You can totally understand that feeling Murray's character was feeling. You just don't want to leave the experience you had. Especially if you leave a good area to go back home to a depressing atmosphere.
From a foreigner's point of view, all Japanese people are friendly. However, Japan is a lonely and closed-off country. You'll understand once you've lived there for a while. This movie captures that atmosphere well. This song is also very suitable.
Bill Murray’s crowning achievement. For people who say he’s just a comedian that is cast in movie roles I say watch this movie three or four times to really appreciate his versatility.
The sense of loosing in translation that you have in Tokyo it’s perfectly represented by Sofia Coppola. I had fall in love for a girl in Tokyo when I was 22, and that was probably the strongest ( and saddest ) moment of my life in the moment I had to leave Japan the week after. I still feel incredible thinking about those days.
Just watched it last night. This scene got me tears. I was able to connect so deeply. Can't believe I was only 4 years old when the movie came out lol.
This movie encapsulates the end of the 90s: we were a bunch of sentimental, cynical teenagers who wore our hearts in our sleeves and were growing up to have hope as our ultimate companion - or emotional limbo as our definitive place to be.
As a man, you cand really feel all of this if you are ofer 50. Just because you are ar the end of your active life and things are going down. This movie is about the last hope of true love. Some of us experience it, others don't. I think Bob knows that his last words are a lie, but a beautifull one. I watch it alone, every time, and the sound is almost at maximum. It makes me smile every time! A... sweet smile.
If you're lucky, once or twice along the way in life your path weaves with someone else who reminds you of all the reasons you used to be happy...even if it's a brief encounter, it lasts forever. a truly magnificent movie ending.

I saw this movie back then when i was in college circa 2007, now i'm hit 35. Life really surprise me how lonely when you at your thirties and fell connected to the movie at least from Bill perspective
I've always loved Bill Murray (ever since I saw Ghostbusters) this movie made me love him even more
thanks to this movie i saw the jesus and mary chain live last December
This was a love letter movie to Tokyo.
+Winston Chueng nice
Thats right! And it work with me! I travel the last year to almost all the locations in Tokyo an Kyoto just to be in the same places that Bob and Charlotte did! I returned home completely in love with Japan!
Lazaro Villarreal, that's so cool!!
Now watch "Enter the Void" ;)
Amazing ending. He's such a wonderful actor
I was absolutely mesmerized by this film, and I was moved by it like few others. My wife wasn't too pleased, though, when it took me a few moments to snap out of it after the film had ended and the theater was empty except for the two of us. Lol. Ahhh, life. Memories of things that were, and that might have been....peace, all.
one of the most beautiful scenes in contemporary cinema, a farewell that is NOT farewell, but rather a see you soon. It totally identifies me!!
This song was meant for this scene. It's perfect
Pure Magic. I Love This Movie.
I like how she´s standing on her toes while they hug. I only realised that BM is quite a tall guy when he performed at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens back in 2018. Through the years I have had a number of possible phrases he may have whispered in her ear. It depends on my phychological state.
このシーンとJust Like Honey がかかるタイミングが良すぎて何時観ても泣ける....しかしこの映画00年代前半か言葉を失う。
"I have to be leaving, but I won’t let that come between us. OK?”
ya can laugh about me...but this is the best fucking ending of one of the best movies...so fucking underated
1 of the best endings of all time. damn.
You wanna cry? This movie certainly got that.
Some nights this part is enough for it.
One of the best movie endings ever. In my opinion.
This film is everything I love and hate wrapped into one. Just beautiful.
The movie is a masterpiece.
This song is also very suitable.
one of the realest things let alone movies i've ever seen.
Bill Murray’s crowning achievement. For people who say he’s just a comedian that is cast in movie roles I say watch this movie three or four times to really appreciate his versatility.
My favorite film❤ Please bring Bob and Charlotte together again!
Can't believe I was only 4 years old when the movie came out lol.
watching Bill Murray in this movie makes me confident about aging ...
Yeah, i was just thinking about that... My Problem is that i fall in love to waay too soon... and then i go looking for a ledge...
This. is. amazing. and. sad.
And joyfull! For both of them!
Try to find what he whispers, you will see that its not so sad ;)
I watched this movie a month ago and I cant get it out of my mind.. Loved it !!!
This movie encapsulates the end of the 90s: we were a bunch of sentimental, cynical teenagers who wore our hearts in our sleeves and were growing up to have hope as our ultimate companion - or emotional limbo as our definitive place to be.
The most profound expression of platonic love I've seen.
Such an underrated movie. The chemistry between bill and scarlet was on point
It hurts my heart in the most perfect way.. incredible ending.
I love this movie it brings out so many emotions it's just such a fantastic movie
you know that i've never met anyone like you before and i'll see you again, okay?
one of the greatest movies I have watched
semplicemente fantastico!!!!
One of the best movies ever.. Friends do not need translation
This movie is so good!! I love it!
The end just makes me cry
This movie and the before sunrise trilogy speak to me.. True and intimate Connection is just so precious
One of the greatest soundtracks of all-time,REALLY !
Doesn’t get any better. Perfection.
A masterpiece...
The coolest ending to a film with the coolest band playing.
