My takes on the Spyro games (spoilers: I think the Spyro franchise, with or without Skylanders (the mostly of not completely high standards of the franchise made it a teensy bit better) very hit-or-miss as well, so it’s hard to pinpoint whether at heart, it’s good or bad even though when the games are bad, they make How to Train Your Dragon 3: The Hidden World look as great as it’s predecessors. Now THAT is low! But I think the franchise has done slightly more right than wrong.)*
5W: The Legend of Spyro 3: Dawn of the Dragon - ✅ ✅ (yep, even by the high (but mostly mixed) standards of TLoS, if you count the console and phone versions of TLoSDotD, this is actually one of my favourite games of the franchise for many reasons and I only agree with some but not most of your criticisms like the first ones about Hunter like him telling the dragons what they couldn’t fly over which is unintentionally underestimating what they could do and his over-realistic design (reminds me of how much we want Final Fantasy to go back to the cartoony designs they used to have in the 1990s games even though the realistic designs are appealing on their own especially for the lower standards of forced realistic facial designs on several video game characters. Looking at you, Call of Duty and Sonic ‘06!)
      5B: Spyro the Dragon 3: Year of the Dragon - ✅ ✅
4W: Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly (aka (as much as I hate to say it but it’s expectable by Spyro the Dragon (2001-05) standards, the real Spyro 4, or how about a much better title? “Spyro: Enter the Dumpster?) - ❌❌ (What do you think?)
4B: The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning - ✅
3W: The Legend of Spyro 2: The Eternal Night - ❌ (I’m sure a lot of people would consider TLoSTEN to Crash of the Titans as TLoSDOTD is to Mind Over Mutant regarding being released at the same time (the formers in late 2007 and the latters in late 2008) for competition’s sake, but in terms of quality, it’s pretty much the other way around. In fact, as Crappy Games Wiki said it best, “Ah, and it just started to get good.”)
3B: Spyro the Dragon 5: A Hero’s Tail - ❌✅ (it’s a beautiful mess. Sure, it has its problems, but even though there are aspects of this game AntDude and Square Eyed Jak (for example) pointed out that undermined it from being great, there are slightly more good things to say about it that makes it at least decent, especially as a sequel to the infamous Enter the Dragonfly)
2W: Spyro: Shadow Legacy - ❌ (this is the Sonic Chronicles of the Spyro franchise)
2B: Spyro the Dragon 2: Ripto’s Rage/Gateway to Glimmer - ✅ (I may agree with ExoParadigmGamer on some of his criticisms towards Spyro 2 (the console version, more on the GBA game that because it’s another Spyro 2, I guess by that logic, Season of Ice is Spyro 1 and Attack of the Rhynocs is Spyro 3) in terms of its frustrating moments of gameplay, but outside of that, I think this game is way too charmingly 2K (it was released in late 1999 which is the same time as other PS1 classics like Pac-Man World 1 (as much as I love the console versions of Pac-Man World 2 even after seeing Jeff Compass, Nitro Rad (the most positive of the three giving it a B+) and King K’s positive-ish (if not super positive like ADAMNATOR’s, TehSnakerer’s and Coop’s, but I understand where they’re coming from) reviews of that super underrated sequel, I’m strongly looking forward to Pac-Man World 1 & (possibly) 2 Re-Pac) not to love!)
HM1: Spyro the Dragon Reignited Trilogy - ✅ (Caddicarus pointed out that there are a few flaws with this game, but it’s still a great way to reignite the Insomniac trilogy of 2K (1998-2000)!)
      HM2: Skylanders (hexalogy) - ✅
HM3: Spyro Advance trilogy - Spyro 1: Season of Ice: ❌. Spyro 2: Season of Flame: ✅ (because of how underwhelmed I was by Season of Ice, even as a kid, I bet it would come as a shocker to many that I think S2SoF really is that much of an improvement! Granted, it has some flaws that keep it away from being amazing, but as far as the lower/more limited standards of Spyro platformers on the handheld instead of the PS1 and eighth-gen home consoles (the original and Reignited Spyro trilogies) go, Digital Eclipse really tried their best with this one). Spyro 3: Attack of the Rhynocs: ✅
HM4: The Legend of Spyro handheld/mobile trilogy - ❌ for the GBA & DS versions of TLoSANB and TLoSDOTD and ✅✅ for the GBA version of TLoSTEN and ✅ for the DS version of The Eternal Night and the mobile versions of the trilogy.
1W: Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy/Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto’s Rampage - ❌❌ (while Crash Purple is boring as sin at best, Spyro Orange, even by Spyro standards, is virtually unplayable!)
1B: Spyro the Dragon (original) - ✅✅ (this is one of my favs up to the ranks of Spyro 3 (which if I could pick one, I still think Spyro 3 the best of the best)!).

I enjoyed Dawn of the Dragon. For me though def not my favorite since I was almost already in highschool at that point or already was, so the original trilogy was *my* childhood game. Which is funny usually people are biased on what is most nostalgic to them as a kid no matter what game. But I do remember having a good time with it especially co-op!

Not to mention you get to play Cynder as well as Spyro. I wish a 4th game was made with a more Sci-fi environment where Spyro and Cynder including Sparx find themselves in the future and get to go into outer space while Cynder and Spyro gain new elements to help battle an alien invasion attacking the planet. Kinda like a Halo game, but with Spyro and new characters for TLOS series not to mention for 10 year olds and older like the previous titles. Also dive into who are Spyro and Cynder’s parents and that they were originally from the modern day future with their families sent them into the past to protect them from the aliens before Spyro defeated Malefor and transported Cynder and Sparx along with himself to the future to stop the aliens. Also having their dads as military generals, Cynder’s mom as a tactical special operations officer/spy, and Spyro’s biological mom a surgeon, a field medic, and a warrior like his dad. Also having both Cynder and Spyro’s parents as Guardians.

The first time I played the Legend of Spyro the Eternal night it was with a friend who happened to have it while I had the other two. I had never played the Second one but I knew the stories of how hard and difficult it was. My friend had for a while but never beat it(he never figured out the tutorial part when he was a kid). We originally played by every death we switch out(Which we changed to 3 because we kept freaking dying). It took us over 22 In game hours and that was using the Dark Spyro cheat code only a 1/4 into the game. It was hell at times but we pulled through. We then went on to play the first and third game together and enjoyed them a whole lot more. His favorite in the trilogy was the first one mainly because of how much he enjoyed using the Lightning and earth breath. Eventually I replayed the Eternal night about a year later(he gave me the game to keep and said he never wanted to see it again). Unlike our last play through, I went out of my way to find all 10 dragon relics(when we played together we got like 3 our first time). I had a much easier time and was able to beat the game in 11 hours. There were points wear I got stuck a bit and almost used cheats but I was able to pull through. Still the worst in the trilogy but not as terrible as when I first played it.

I disagree with DOTD. I like the redesigns. The designs do look off and weird same with the animations but overall, The game is completely fun even playing it with a friend since it had Co-op. Story was good, again it did had plot holes and it has its flaws but the gameplay was great. Controls were clunky but I got used to them and the best part is the Valley of Avalar level where you can fly anywhere cause it looked so open-world and Dark Spyro, wished we get play as him against Malefor, would've loved to see Malefor's reaction of seeing Spyro go into his dark counterpart. I respect your opinion but I put DOTD as my top 5 best at number 5. And trust me, Spyro in the Imaginators cutscences looks downright ugly, nothing can top it. It looks like he's made out of playdoh

    My favorites are (in Order):
    5. Legend of Spyro: Eternal Night- just not as good as the first but still enjoyable
    4. Spyro The Dragon (first game)
    3. Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage
    2. Legend of Spyro: New Beginning
    1. Spyro 3 Year of the Dragon
And yes I included the reignited versions and original versions interchangeably. The worst were:
    1. Hero's Tale
    2. Enter the Dragonfly
Both were just broken, unplayable messes. I never played the rest.

It was the best they could do at the early 2000s when it comes to the first game, but they could have made the PS2 version of Dawn of The Dragon have the same graphics as the Xbox 360 version. I still have all three and can play them to my heart’s desire… as long as my PS2 doesn’t die on me, used up at least two already in my childhood and one blew up when I turned it off. The disc inside was scorched and was brown on the bottom. It was a small explosion, but it was still a loud one. There was smoke and a little fire, I could see it behind the power button. The only Spyro game I’ve ever played was Dawn of the Dragon. I liked it, but only because I was a kid that couldn’t find any other dragon games and being able to fly was really cool to me. It’s a shame the areas weren’t really built for flying though, putting in weird invisible walls or grounding your character to force you to do stupid puzzles. I also recall them being very small, so the flying would often be very janky as you fought the game’s attempts to force you to use other mechanics.

The reason Sparx feels like such a jerk in The Eternal Night is because the lines were written for David Spade, who has a totally different style than Billy West. Spade sort of says obnoxious stuff in a lighthearted cadence that makes it clear he's just good-naturedly ribbing other characters. West's delivery style is gruffer and doesn't fit with that kind of dialogue - it doesn't really sound lighthearted, it sounds sarcastic. It really goes to show how important delivery is, and how a different actor saying the same lines can really change the feel of an entire scene.

7:03 Huh, interesting. I always thought as time went on that Stewart Copeland's skills at writing music for Spyro just got better and better. Out of the original trilogy I find myself loving more of the OST in Year of the Dragon than the first 2 games. Not to say the first 2 have bad OSTs at all, the man's a god at making good music. But the OSTs I thought just kept getting better as time went.
I can point out very few tracks in 1 and 2 that I love in comparison to how many I can point out in 3. Like to give an idea, off the top of my head in 1 I love the tracks for Dreamweaver's Homeworld, Lofty Castle, and Wizard Peak. In 2 I love the tracks for Magma Cone, Fracture Hills, Hurricos, and Glimmer. Oh man but 3, I love the tracks for Seashell Shore, Sunny Villa, Dino Mines (the updated one not the one that uses Sunny Villa's track), and I think both Frozen Altars and Fireworks Factory have some of the best tunes in the whole franchise.
Funny thing though I also kinda love Enter the Dragonfly's OST almost as much as Year of the Dragon, I know the game is awful but damn, Stewart Copeland didn't need to go so hard on the tunes lmao. Cloud 9, Monkey Monastery, Thieves Den, my favorite Honey Marsh, all bangers.

You sure about that? Have you heard the ost and actually played through the game til Celestial Caves? The experience is very mystical and the music gives it a stranger tone, Dream even is bizarre and creepy especially when you first play the game and TEN on PS2 felt calming, strange and dark especially with the menu and the menu, the menu is powerful especially around the end when the thunder strikes loudly as the Well of Souls' spider vein-like cracks pulse with negative energy, the male singer in the choir adds to that one moment, you can actually feel the darkness and energy radiate off the screen with the Well of Souls sitting inactive in a barren wasteland with mist and the Celestial Moons hanging above in the sky not even close to each other yet, it feels scary because that massive mountain is building up energy from the dark spirits and negativity from the thunder surrounding it very VERY slowly and the menacing threat that is waiting to arrive once those Moons eclipse.

Was surprised Skylanders was a honorable mention, but you raised excellent points. And also agree Skylanders really started to drop in quality and such in 2016. For me, it seemed Superchargers was more so a attempted cash grab/attempt to get into the racing games like Mario kart, and then Imaginators felt more invested in the gimmic and tie in with the show than telling the story established and built with the first 4 games.
Will say Skylanders holds a special place for me given I grew up with the platformer/collectathon era, mainly Ratchet and Clank, Lego Star Wars, and the first Jak & Daxter. Mainly though, Skylanders was my escape during high school, and helped me with my spout of depression and feeling of "not belonging" in high school.

TLOS needs to shine again… besides, there are a few things that would’ve been cool to have in the games. Like having unlimited furies as a cheat for example… also being able to use the final element in the first game whenever after you beat it would’ve been cool too. Maybe some skins or silly extras as well like the good old days, that’s what games need again. Not necessarily cheats as in “help me beat it the first time around faster” or anything else that brings shame to gamers, but things that make games worth revisiting instead of leaving them to rot on the shelf. Skins and extras that not only affect the gameplay but the cutscenes as well are great for replaying stories multiple times, giving gamers fun and new experiences and more ways to enjoy a game. Why don’t developers do this stuff anymore? It should be fun and rewarding to make these additions…

Wow you went a mile ahead to make a really good and convincing research of every game listed in every category for its analysis!
This was a very interesting top list! You put a great effort in explain each game about it's pros and cons, along passion in getting into detail.
I also loved the little jokes here and there, the one of "TEN in a nutshell" was my favorite. Really sums up the game lol.
I admit I was surprised that EtD was not in the first worst, and more that Spyro 1 was the first best. But I think it makes sense.
I love that you considered the Skylanders, Spyro GBA games and also (some of) The Legend of Spyro portable games as honorable ones. (TEN of GBA is truly the best one)
But overall I fully understand your points and views. And I can agree that Orange was really the worst of all. So much for a long-waited event.
Spyro is a really fantastic franchise, that like many others has it's highs and lows, but at the end of they day, we still love that heroic dragon.
It is a fact that, after the original trilogy, the games after didn't reach the same level of popularity, quality or excitement like before, but that doesn't mean that all of them are just bad. There are actually good and even great games that came after, and there are people that genuinely enjoy the games that are seen as bad. And that's good.
I wonder what the future of Spyro might give us. But I hope, is a bright one.
Wonderful work with the video! I bet you did a lot of work and effort to complete it, and was totally worth it. And I hope this satisfied you. I am. :)
PS: Hey, I really appreciate how you gave attention to the voice actors. We play the games, but they give the characters their essence. Still love Tom Kenny and Elijah Wood voices a lot.
And I agree that Billy West is the best Sparx. Sounds just so fitting.

Spyro games (and 90-00 games in general) often give me horrible motion sickness. I had to limit how long I could play or watch these games (especially if it wasn’t me or my brother trying to accommodate me with how he controlled the camera playing)
And then came Enter the Dragonfly.
That game is basically unplayable. The lagging and loading is seriously awful and often outright crashed. And my brother who never gets motion sick? Yeah. He got sick playing this game. YotD I could sometimes acclimate to or play for a short burst then need to call it quits; EtDF basically made my brother sick in “my old YotD sick-time” or less.
Don’t think either of us vomitted, but it was pretty close at times.
Then there’s even MORE side quests to complete the game (with many dragonflies in the middle of escort or “game pushes you forward” segments) and I swear a spike in difficulty in general + the really awful and cringy writing and voice directing (and a poorly executed Princess Bride spoof)…
We gave up on it. And I haven’t seen anything about EtDF that’s made me want to try and stomach through it (literally) as an adult

People are allowed to dislike a design, doesn't matter if it ever changes again. A design is a design and people will think it sucks no matter what. If you're tired of people ragging on the design even though he has gone back to his old one, you might as well be tired of people ragging on a game even though a newer one came about that went back to the good old days. If they don't like they don't like. Characters always go through redesigns, and some of them will suck regardless of the others.

That’s why I gave it an honorable mention instead of putting it in either lists because I wanted to be fair and not give in to the fanbase and trash on it just to fuel their ego.

The story felt like it wasn't complete but the darkness of it is what sold it for me! I used to leave the game at the menu just to hear the opera song, then beat it countless times to hear broken soul! if you pause the game during the credits and go to the music volume slider it will repeat all the songs that play on a continuous repeat! That was my itunes back then lol

I grew up playing enter of the dragonfly, and I know it did leave a scare on the franchise, but it still get a remastered version so the franchise can redeem themselves and so people can get the game that was supposed to happen, cuz like he said the developers were pushed and rushed but this time they won’t be so I think a remaster of enter of the dragonfly sounds like a good idea.

Aww nuts, Eternal Night is actually my favorite Spyro game..(Ok, its cuz its only one of two Spyro games i played ever, the other being A Heroes tail which i also loved) The box art admittedly won me over so i had to play it~ does it have flaws? Sure, but the combat is so much fun to use and Using Dark Spyro was even funnier! Also the Vocal track in the credits "This Broken Soul" became one of my favorite songs of all time~💜 So Eternal Night forever has a place in my heart!😊

DAWN OF THE DRAGON IS LITERALLY MY FAVORITE 😭😭😭😭
Jokes aside, this one is probably my favorite bcause i used to play it A LOT with my father when i was like... A ten little girl or smth. Carries a lot of nostalgia, and sentimental emotions to me, its like a representative of our relationship. I was so delighted about this game since ive played for some minutes, i had literal sparkles on my eyes, and it doesn't matter how much we try and play this game again, never gonna beat the feeling that i got when we played the game for the first two or three times. We've finished this game five or six times nowadays, still feels kinda magic though.
Anyways, i still think its a great game with its problems and plot wholes, my dad used to say its almost a kid's GOW :p
Also, as i live in Brazil, we used to choose the spanish dubs since it was 10% easier to understand than english that time. AND I CAN TELL YOU BRO, SPANISH DUB ROCKS, for me the original voices of Spyro, Cynder and Sparx are from the spanish dubbing, change my mind

I can agree with most of these and see your point, for the first two TLOS games i think Cynder looks awesome but Spyro has a big ass head in the first two and it looks awkward but all 3 games were awesome and edgy which was a cool storyline, best storyline in the Spyro franchise i think, Year of The Dragon will always be my favorite hands down i love everything about that game from level design, characters and their voice actors even Moneybags is awesome and in that game u get to see Bianca develop herself and grow to be a powerful friend of yours, on to Hero's Tail, I didnt get into it much and I absolutely hated the voice actor for Spyro in that game ffs he sounds like an Italian mob boss

Dawn Of The Dragon, and A Hero's Tail. My PS2s broke :( I had like three different PS2 consoles and they are all dead. But if my channel blows up I might get a new console along with these games that I used to play and stream me playing them. I also used to eat DimSims whilst playing NB lol. Ah, nostalgia.

This was very well done and the choices you made for each list is interesting and what you brought up makes sense. The funny thing is I grew up with the legend of Spyro series first and then the other games. However, what you have brought up makes sense and I respect your opinions too.

I've lost interest in your video as soon as you said that. Dawn of the Dragon was the worst. But that's only YOUR opinion. I loved the Legend of Spyro series ever since it came out on GameCube sure, there's some shity details and everything but I like the story and at least they kept some of the music from the first Legend of Spyro game. While I do think the first game has its perks and it does at least you can not only shoot fire from your face but ice, lightning, earth and purple Fury which I think is conveniently. And in the first game you only had two damn attacks charge and Flame attack. In the 3rd loS you can FUCKING FLY not only Glide but fucking flap your fucking wings. Spyro itself has come a long way from its games and storytelling.
And for the animation I thought it was great. Because I was into that kind of stuff for the time and I didn't care how it look because it was new and it looked great for the game. Not to mention it had some original characters in it. I might not have played every Spire game that you probably have. But that's why The Legend of Spyro has a special place in my heart. And you're acting like Erin Hanson for shitting on games especially for the Nintendo 64 Majora's Mask I could care less from the barf floor to the actual wood textures.

I wanna see adult too. But okey Spyro 3 is pretty good. Cuz multiple playable characters. I liked Shela and SgtBird

Having reached the end, I can only understand your thoughts on the Reignited Trilogy, seeing as that’s the only one I have… and my experience with Enter The Dragonfly is corrupted due to the fact that I can only faintly remember having the game, even if I have no memory of playing it.
And with that being said, I hope you have a great weekend, Travis.

Spyro 1 was my fav in the trilogy. I didn’t like the mini games in the second and third games they were frustrating mostly . Spyro one has the best pacing and overall was really well made. Spyro 4 would be the worst atleast based on reviews. Overall a great childhood series though

One thing i love about the Legend of Spyro games is that, they spawned alot of cool, entertaining, and interesting Fan-made stories & comics. My personal favorites so far are Seeraphine's "Zirra's Return" & RusCSI's "Pure Light".
Now admidetly, i've only played the 3rd game in the trilogy (Dawn of the Dragon). And in all honesty, i love it! But i get what you're coming from. It's not the best Spyro game, but it's certainly not the worst either. It's more like somewhere in between, where it can be OK at best and mediocre at worst. (And that's basically in reguards to the entire trilogy in general). In my opinion anyway.
But like i said, i still love it, regardless of it's shortcomings.
So, in short, my response to your ranking of DotD: I don't agree with it, but i get it.

My main problem with Dawn of a Dragon was how much of the gameplay is consumed by the combat, and the combat isn't even that good. Sure you can use different powers and such, but even with both dragons maxed out it still takes incredibly long to finish any encounter because the enemies can soak up so much damage. It feels like mopping a giant floor instead of y'know, combat.

Unpopular opinion/hot take: Enter the Dragonfly could be (and is to me) the best Spyro in the series. If it hadn't been for the game being a bit unpolished, I think it would have been loved by the majority of players.
