EDIT: Rare does not mean non-existent. Nobody cares about ethnicity, but as a black man it makes me happy to see that black artists are going against the grain. (doing something other than hip hop and not being ashamed). Since I was a kid I couldn't admit I liked screamo because I'd be bullied relentlessly and called whitewashed. Not a big Pierce the veil fan but to see a black guy doing a cover of heavy screaming dirty vocals is insanely great. I am only mixed, not fully black but I can say first hand that the black community has given me such a hard time my entire life over hardcore and post hardcore music. We need to break down these racial barriers.
That's why I'm going to write prog-rap. Deadass. I always want more perspective in music from everywhere. This dude Eric is a fucking stellar vocalist. And I'm sorry my dude, I can only imagine. People into heavier music already get shit from the general population, I can't imagine what it's like to have that compounded by your own community.
Have you heard Zeal & Ardor? Really unique take on heavy music from a "black" perspective. (Black Metal meets Black Spirituals) I put it in quotes because it's more complicated than that, but still worth checking out.
Have you heard about Sepultura? It's a Brazilian heavy metal band with Derrick Green in vocals. He's an awesome singer.
One of my favourite examples of this, is the band 'Oceano'. Dawn of Descent is my fav song from them. Beautiful big black man for a vocalist. :)
