The refugees sitting surrounded by the barb wire are the key. In Germany the boogie man is called der schwarze Mann = the black man. Rammstein use it metaphorical. Fear of the unknown, the foreign. Spreaded by fake news and media (newspaper, TV, internet) and so on. Guys, this video is full of symbolism. I could write a whole essay. I am glad you liked it :)

    Just some remarks:
The several times mentioned "Schwarze Mann" ("black man") is known as a child fright figure in the German-speaking area ("Wer hat Angst vorm Schwarzen Mann" = Who does fear the black man). Depending on the region and time, it was understood to mean different beings: a dark shadowy figure or a man dressed in black. As a metaphor, the "bogeyman" reached a "peak" as personalization of evil, savagery, and the unknown in the course of colonization, and in the process also acquired a racist connotation. In this context, I find the consumption of those sweets (German so-called "negro kisses") at the end during the end credits very interesting, which work through this "black man" symbolism.
Also the colors usage is interesting (Black/White/Red representing the Nazi-color Spectrum). I also found it interesting at the end of the credits that when the TV was destroyed, the color came back into the picture.
Further, I noticed that the pie-like plots seen from above correspond to the "political symbol" at the lectern where the singer, wearing a straitjacket, gives his speech. After these borders & plots collapse during the wild shoot-out, the politician, unleashed by the straitjacket to spread his propaganda/fear.
Cheering on the cheerleaders is the equivalent of pitching an idea/product and the dancers are slammed with money to sell the bricks and guns to the landowners.
This Clip has many layers and can be interpreted in many directions. I see there is a statement on xenophobia and populism/media

Man, so much to talk about in this song, as always with Rammstein 😉Let me give a little breakdown on this:
    1. The song is about how certain "leaders" want to afraid people to control them. In the video, this is visualised by the red wires.
    2. The dominant colors in the viedeo are black, white and red, which are the colors of the flag of the Kaiserreich and the Third Reich. Also, you can say that the world the people in this video are living in, is just black and white, no grey. It can be understood as a reference to the simple minded people who are for example voting for politicians who are telling them exactly this black/white view (WE are good, THEY are bad). Also, the band is dressed up as the stereotype of this kind of conservative people.
    3. "Der schwarze Mann" (The black man) is a german synonym for a creepy, ghost-like evil. As in the first verse of the song, children are often told "to obey, or else the black man will get you". It can be translated to boogey man in english, but like often, there is another meaning in this context. As said, the video is about leaders who are seedeing fear of anything foreign in peoples minds. So, the phrase "black man" can also be interpreted literally, namely refugees. In my opinion, it is a reference to the migration crisis in 2015 in Germany,. Or just remember the plans for a wall on the Mexican border...
OK, that's enough for now, I think with this hints you can figure out the rest for yourseve 😉 Greetings from Germany!

Another hint: the band members who actually play the music are FFP3-masked, and the red wires of fear spread from them. Does it mean that it is a satire against COVID fearmongers? Yes and no. Their opponents play the same game. They are just the opposite spoke of a wheel.
And yet another hint: the six neighbors live in a circular world, or in a six-spoked wheel (the six-spoked wheel is also portrayed on Lindemann's lectern). Each one knows his closest neighbors immediately to the left and right of him (and before they start building high walls, the are friendly with their neighbors), but not his opposite on the other side of the circle. That opposite neighbor is the boogieman. So the anti-immigrationists see the pro-immigrationists, and the pro-immigrationists see anti-immigrationists. The do not see the real people with real concerns, they all see just the evil boogieman on the opposite side. On another spoke line promaskers and antimaskers play the same boogieman game, and so on.
Most of the listeners will, of course, happily take the song and the video as a jab against their own boogieman, and just reinforce their prejudices.
But those who can question themselves, those who can understand that their own views on the opposite side are as distorted as their opponents', well, they are worth it. The song can help those who realize it's about themselves.

A couple small things that I haven't seen anyone else point out:
The line "backs are wet" is repeated multiple times. If you reverse the order and combine "wet" and "back" you get a common derogatory slur for Mexican immigrants crossing the US-Mexico border.
Also the focus on the cheerleaders in so much of the video, all young innocent white girls, combined with the lyrics brings to mind the stereotypical fear of a white father worrying that his daughter will end up with a black man.
Great analysis though, as someone who barely speaks level-1 high school German I love to see how German people interpret the songs. Really helps me appreciate how great they are.

@@user-hv7jv8bb6c The mask thing is interesting, I didn't know that. I definitely wouldn't say their parody is 50/50 though as far as making fun of both sides. They very clearly make fun of racists and anti-immigrant sentiment, and Till's look with the goofy blonde haircut is 1000% supposed to represent Donald Trump or Boris Johnson. The color pallete (black, white, gray, red) is the same as that used by the Nazis on their flags, uniforms, etc. They're dressed up like stereotypical middle-aged conservative 50's era suburbanites. They're literally making out with heavily accessorized tacticool AR-15s/HK416s, the kind of stuff that conservatives love drooling over.
I'm not sure if you're one of those annoying "enlightened centrists", or this is a really lame psy-op attempt at trying to convince everyone that this fucking amazing video isn't primarily making fun of fear-mongering, anti-immigrant, right-wing faux-populists...either way nice try buddy...

    • @Nitro20101
      @Nitro20101 2 года назад +6

      @@natti8729 Oh, come on man.
The lyrics start with the story of how fathers make childrent obidient by scaring them that the "black man" will take them. That is a common form of normalising xenophobic and racist stereotypes, especially toward Romani people or immigrants. It continues how now the whole land and people are scared of the "black man". The chorus describes a person in total panic of the black man. There is even a lyric which describes that fear "Trust no one foreign."
And that's even before we go into the video which starts with two women of color circled with barbed wire which is an obvious reference to racism in Europe towards immigrants. You can google how many borders installed barbed wires in Europe after war refugees from Syria started fleeing to Europe.
Then in the video you have members of the band act roles of middle class white men which become increasingly paranoid and armed after consuming stuff on their PC and listening to right-wing speakers. They build walls, install survailance equipment and buy guns. All of this while the Till sings "Who is afraid of the black man?". With him on the lawn it seems like really an on the nose reference to that St. Louis lawyers and his wife
Then the whole video ends with one of them (Till) destroys the TV as one of the sources of racist rhetoric and as he is destroying it the whole video starts from having only two-three colors, starts to have even more until has the full spectre of color is visible implying that racism make distinct racial categories of people while in reality there is a whole rainbow of bodies, peoples and strugles.
      Does that help?

Both flags has been shown multiple times on ralleys against refugees, Covid measures, etc.. "Who is afraid of the black man" is the name of an old children game.
It stems from the time of the plague when men clothed in black where going from neighborhood to neighborhood to collect the dead.
The fear was to see the black man coming, since it meant that death was already there.
Since the plague was carried by people, new arrivals in remote villages where cast out by people afraid of the black man.
The images show the band getting more and more upset by the words of the television and paying more and more for unneeded security.
Towards the end the TV shows them simply their now weaponized neighbors to provoke to violence.
In the last scene the TV shows them the refugees while the smartphone shows the them to the refugees, showing the new target of fear to the opposite sides.
The "spell" is broken by till, destroying the TV.

Knocks you off your feet straight away. Brilliant song about the way that propaganda is spread and how people lap it up even to their detriment. The song is simply perfection, the video, another masterpiece from Rammstein and Robert Gwisdek and the message is clear- fear the bogeyman because the bogeyman is you unless you look at the full picture. The symbolism just stunning, it's there in every scene. Till is madness personified both as his character and through his voice. The music driving and pounding and so, so Rammstein at their best. The ending of the video is unsettling especially with the piano playing in the background and the wind howling but what would a Rammstein video be if not unsettling. The mad man constraint in a straight-jacket, speaking on a podium in a fascist like setting and at the end being unleashed speaks I think really well to this escalation of a fear and resentment based world-view, that turns into violence, madness, hatred and destruction.

    Here the Lyrix:
    When the children are ill-bred
    Already the father has threatened
"The bogeyman, he will take you
If you do not follow my commandment"
And we believe it to this day
So in fear are the land and the people
    Something bad will happen
Evil is coming, it will not go away
And the fear grows into the night
    Door and gates are guarded
    Backs wet, hands clammy
All are afraid of the bogeyman
    (You)
    In darkness he creeps up
If you're not good, he'll touch you
    Never trust a stranger then
So much nightmare, so much delusion
And so we believe to this day
    Heavily armed is the mob
    Oh, they can't help it
    Shouting fire into the alleys
And fear grows into the night
    Not a wink of sleep
Their backs wet, their hands clammy
All are afraid of the bogeyman
    (You)
    (YOU)
    (You)
Who is afraid of the bogeyman?
    Who's afraid of the bogeyman?
    Who's afraid of the bogeyman?
    Who is afraid?
And fear grows into the night
    Not a wink of sleep
    Backs wet, hands clammy
    All are afraid
    (You)
    (You) Black man

We have an old kids play that goes "are you scared of the black man? "No!" "But if he comes?" "Then we run away!". I remember we did that in elementary school.
Not sure what it's referring to. A man in black coat, death (like grim reaper) or actually a dark skinned man? Good chance it's racist. At least it can be understood that way and Rammstein use this play on words here. It's the Angst (fear) of refugees that come to Germany and how some people want to arm up.

    Hello from Germany.
"Whose is a afraid of the black man" is a Kid's game from back in the late 1860's that I played as a kid. It goes back to mideveal times of the plague or also known as 'the black death'. Bodies actually turned black (sorry, was that too pictorial?). So the game "Who is afraid of the black man" is actually refering to the boogeyman. In the song it's being used to address the fear/ racism of refugees or anything non-familiar. The song is taking a ruthless/ brutal honest look at the philistine. Working a 9- 5 job, barbecue at the weekend in the well kept front yards, gossiping over the news. But behind the tidy fassade it's quite ugly and they are glued to the screens consuming what they believe are "news". And it nourishes their fear. A quite provocative detail in the outro that every German will catch on to is, that they are eating chocolate foam kisses on the sofa (don't know what they are actually named in english). In Germany they used to be called "Negro kisses" or "Moor heads". Fortunately the name of the candy was changed a few years ago and some people (those philistine) got mad about it 🙄 and some of these idiots still call the candy by its old name.
This song is one of my favourites. Such a banger. The video is another amazing piece of art.
    With love from Germany

@@Uwe-tq4jr Ach Uwe.

"Die schwarze-mann" is German for boogie man - no racial implication at al but it's an unfortunate lateral translation. The song is about how media tell us to be afraid of everything and the result is a divided society who no longer talk to to each other, instead we turn our fear and hatred to the unknown and we're suspicious of everything. I love the imagery of the bound and gagged politician being held up and forced to recite the words. The end scene, Til smashing the old CRT tv, that's the hope, that we can still find our way back to a day when society wasn't controlled by the screen.

    • @illumi4460

Is has racial and xenophobic implication. Thats the whole reason why they used the boogie man to hide a second meaning behind it. Thats also why they are eating N*gerküsse at the end. Its obviously supposed to take a piss at conservative fearmongering which is why they are all arming themselves and which is why you can see refugees closed behind barb wire.
They cant make it more obvious than that. Cmon

It's just art to me. That whole thing. There are better poets, better musicians, better visual artists, but the package? Pretty outstanding. I don't like to say that they are the best, that belittles other great artists. But, well, they keep amazing me. This word play, Schwarzer Mann's literal translation is Black Man, so for an english speaker, the meaning is obvious as soon as they hear that translation. But in german, the meaning is not as clear, it's more like Boogeyman. The context is required to make clear that it might actually be indeed a reference to people being afraid of literally black men. I imagine it being like in english you'd have a song like "fear of the dark" (sorry iron maiden) and then twist it a bit and it becomes fear of dark skin people. Something like that.

It can be read as a commentary on fear of immigration. In Germany, Europe in general, a lot of fear is spread around immigration from Africa, because we have a lot of immigrants trying to reach our shores from the south. So the "black man" can be taken as the boogie man but also literally. Of course, Rammstein are not racists, but they're highlighting how people are being pushed into being fearful of the other, the guys in the video fencing themselves in, while the refugees at the beginning and end of the video are also fenced in, probably not by their own free will. It's a commentary on how the internet, irresponsible media shores up fears in people and I think the particular angle Rammstein are going for is best understood when you're German and part of this cultural circle that we're in.

At the end of the video, the band eats candy. In Germany it was called Negro kisses (Literally from german into english translated Nigga kisses). The government decided that the name was racist. The sweets could no longer be called that. All companies had to change the name to chocolate foam kisses. This changes the perspective on the lyrics and what background it might have. Furthermore, the color of the video gives us some information. We have a present where all colors are included and we have the TV program with the Boogeyman theme. There is only black and white with red accents. The separate walls between the band members remind me of Kurt Lewin's experiments on parenting styles: democratic, laissez-faire and autocratic. Kurt Lewin was one of the most important psychologists of the 20th century. He was the founder of the so-called field theory and group dynamics
