In 1976, I was there at Massey Hall in Toronto - just 10 rows back from Geddy’s side of the stage - when this masterpiece was recorded. It ranks as one of the top highlights of my entire life. I have lost count how many thousands of times I have listened to Neil’s incredible solo from this concert - each time I hear it, I am transported back to my youth. Neil, thank you so much for the many amazing gifts you have given me (and the world) over the decades. Rest In Peace Professor - your work is now complete.
I agree. My cousin used to play all the Rush albums in the 70s when I was a kid. This drum solo has always stood out for me. Inarguably one of the best drum solos ever. Neil Peart, the professor on the drum kit!
Drum solo from the Show of hands tour was also at the top especially the visual the sound of the kit was amazing seen Rush 15 time's first was Farewell to king's when I was 14 I'm now 56 RIP Neil
Yes, the most stripped down, organic solo from him, still to this day! Later, he became more patterned, planned, and with so many new electronics. Still amazing, nonetheless, but the early raw stuff is where it's at. Miss you, Neilster!!! 😔
@@GRILLBUOY101 Oh I can cry. Neil was my inspiration to learn the drum kit. I will miss the beautiful music he brought to this world, and I empathize with his two brothers and bandmates who spent 5 plus decades with him. The world is truly a better place because of the contributions Neil Peart made. God bless his family...
Yeah, as much as I remain a devoted fan, I liked this solo best. His later solos seemed a little disjointed to me and I wasn't crazy about the swing stuff. It's all good, but not like this.
It's good to know that, after so many years, his basic drum solo structure still hasn't changed, and better yet, to know he's perfected it the way it's come to us, is just mind shattering. Not many professionals can boast getting better with age like Neil does.
this album and solo got me hooked when I was 15 years old!!! one of my all time favorite bands!! NEIL IS A KILLER DRUMMER, always one of my favorites!!! Am 57 still is!! All 3 members of the band, the best at their craft!!

The Professor on the drum kit was all of 24 years old at this time. I drove my family crazy playing this album on our ridiculously huge home stereo all summer in 1977 and I still play it on my iPhone on road trips mainly all these years later and it still melts my face. Thank You Gordon YYZed for posting this.
STILL one of my favorite drum solo's! Just like a great song it has a beginning, middle and end. Very well structured with a lot of rhythmic and melodic contrast.
this is and all ways will be the number 1 drum solo of sll times and no 1 ever will be able to top it please keep this on here gru up with it and love it!!!!!
First heard this in my friends old VW bug on 8 track wayyyy back. I became an instant RUSH fan and it was the coolest thing I had ever heard on drums until I was fortunate enough to see Buddy Rich play live a year or so later. Until Neil's "Burning for Buddy" recordings were released, I had no idea the influence that Buddy had on Neil throughout most of his life. It made perfect sense and I was not in the least bit surprised.
This is the one that set the bar, this is the one that drum solo hating people liked. It was a whole new level of though, musical structure and rehearsed execution........ a single instrument musical piece.
Since Permanent Waves Tour 1980 Palladium Theatre NYC. I have seen RUSH AND THE PROFESSOR 17 times. Never a dull moment. An incredible high that shall last a lifetime. WE MISS YOU PRATT
This album and this track in particular at the 3:36 mark is what got me hooked on Rush when I was 14 years old ,, I have seen them in concert over 20 plus times ,, the 70's ,, 80's ,, 90's ,, 2000's and 2010's ,, it's been a long journey following them during my life and I want to thank my late older brother who allowed me to go to many of these concerts with him especially the early days ,, thank you Jeffrey ,, until I see you again ,, RIP ,, also RIP to Mr Neil Peart ,, he was a amazing musician and person !!
This forever transformed my appreciation of music - I was 10 years old when this came out - inspired me to become a drummer as a teen, bought TAMA because of him, played live all around New England after Berkelee Boston - Love you man - Thank you man
Ok... I, like countless others, have been studying Neil's work and Rush in general for over 40 years now. I've listened to this particular solo over and over again too many times to count. As well as every solo that has been recorded and released since then AND all of the times I've seen Rush live. But it has been a looooong time since I've listened to this particular solo and now after hearing it again I must say that this might possibly be his best recorded solo. I'm NOT trying to take away anything from all of his countless other solos but there is just something about this one. You can tell he was young and hungry for what was to come and he definitely blew the roof off with this one.
Anyone familiar with Barrie Barlow and his drumming with Jethro Tull??? Do yourselves a favor and check out the live Tull album "Bursting Out" sometime. He, along with Neil Peart and J. Bonham are my top favorites...but there are SO many more that I think are great!!!
Only 2 years before this recording the kid from St. Catharines was working in his father's agricultural equipment dealership on St. Paul Street West and getting drunk under the willows at Lakeside Park. Now, the City of St. Catharines has named a pavilion at Lakeside Park after him and soon there will be statues erected of him there too. I'd trade the pavilion and statues for a chance to see him drum one more time in an instant. RIP Neil. What a great person, Canadian and drummer.
After all these years this STILL smokes 99% of the rock drum solos out there! I still avidly go to concerts and and am a fan of a lot of the later bands like TOOL, Slipknot, A7X, Mastedon, Lamb of God (to name a few). There's a lot of great drummers out there, but this solo has such a great feel all the way through and doesn't have that typical "Quad Fest" or 1....2....3....Go approach you see so many rock drummers fall into.
This particular solo turned the ears of the drummer world every where. It could be named the solo that changed more drum set ups than any other in history. I really miss his open bottom concert toms. His now closed bottom toms just don't have the quality upper end sound.
I so wish they had this solo on video. Much prefer his earlier work. This was one of his best. Straight ahead drumming. Not into his last stuff. Too disjointed. He had his best chops in the early days. RIP
I had this album back then. I was also an aspiring drummer. My older brother used to make fun of me while I was practicing. He would say "Ladies and gentlemen, the scientist on his practice pad". I didn't like it at the time, but I find it hilarious now.

Saw him do this solo in November 1977. I thought then, and think now, that he was the greatest drummer ever. A good man, too. RIP Neil.
I saw them for the first time in 77. I was blown away, so was every 14 year old guy. No girls, but hey, we knew what was good.
