I am so impressed by how he remembers all of the parts and details of the drum arrangement. 99% of todays drummers probably wouldn’t be able to remember just the first minute. What a fantastic Drummer Neil was
Neil Peart University is still accepting applications. 1st assignment: Watch Exit Stage Left Live in 1981 and study Xanadu and notice how Neil drives the bus. Neil Peart University Alumni ( TM ). All you need is some headphones and sticks to attend. Tuition is free. Each year the classes never fill up because people will never stop studying Neil’s drumming. Professor Peart is the only instructor. See you all there! Thanks Neil!
I will never get tired of watching these videos. SO grateful to all that he gave us. His music, his lyrics, his prose writing, his books, his life philosophies... the list goes on. Such and inspiring human. And look at the end of the video... they say there are no female RUSH fans. The Bones tour was my first. I got to meet the band in Oakland thanks to Primus's tour manager.
Thank you for putting this up on RUclips!! This was just pure joy. Big Money is my favorite Rush song because his drum arrangement is so BADASS!! I ❤️ it!! RIP Neil Peart-The Professor.
It´s unbelievable what Mr. Peart did in this amazing video. He was a great drummer, a genuis. RIP Mr. Peart...always be remembered as one of the greatest......thanks for everything you gave us
Personally, I think this album and hold your fire, is the pinnacle of their arrangements and technology - some of the hardest played live Wild seeing all the stuff going on in this song and his arrangements fit so well incorporating digital samples with acoustic drums guy could play tennis back there on this chart . Another note you see the shear raw power he pounds the hell out of drum then changes his approach once he studied with Fred grubber plays it with more finesse later tours but switched back to matched grip on charts he plays prior to Freddy instruction era . Miss the boys on stage
I toured for about 20 years as a drummer. I had always tried to get to either a “local history” type museum, or even just the “Visitors Center” to get a feel for the town, city, country. Yeeeeears later I found out that my hero Neil had done similar things !! 😊❤️🎶🥁
The entire Album is one of their best right there with Waves, Pictures and Grace. The rest was ok until the end when it was fun again. The earlier albums were another music, genius as well.
Man!!!! is not only that he is a master at techniques but si the way he approche the drum catching the spirit of the song. If you hear the druming sounds like a industrial machine, very squared, very tight..... the little details of the professor.
The way he approaches this is a great example why I prefer him to (insert drum God name here). So much variety to the playing in the various parts, but it still flows so seamlessly and is so cohesive and complimentary to the song. The drums are just as signature as anything else in the song.
Thanks for sharing. This is so great! I’m pretty sure this is a drum clinic Neil did for the drum school students at Musician's Institute in Hollywood. I was at the guitar school there in 89-90 and Neil and Geddy had done clinics there earlier in the 80s. 1985 maybe? Neil was an absolute force on the drums. He’s mashing them. This song has it all. Power, intricate stuff, dynamics. Thanks for the music, Neil! 👊
Im not sure if its known that he said that. I keep hearing that same phrase about alex being said by eddie van halen and other guitarists, and same with other drummers for neil. There are a lot of people who still think bonham was better than neil. But neil himself has said there are many drummers better than him that play stuff he cant play, which is true. Difference is neils lyrics. No drummers can match that.
I'd like to believe that it's true, but I doubt it. Considering that John Bonham died in 1979..That's 5 years after Neil joined Rush. He hadn't had time to establish his status yet and was probably still running below the radar of most other drummers at that point.🤔
@@HighPower762 You're right....I was just using different names for a chuckle. The actual question was asked to Eric Clapton as a guitarist. He replied, "why don't you ask Prince." That one DID happen. Still would have been cool to see Neil and Jon meet!
It's kinda refreshing to hear that, without the magic of mics and audio engineering, Neil's kit sounds a bit like my ol' 85 Pearl Export from back in the days when I spent hours & hours learning & playing this song while crammed into a corner of my teenage bedroom.
You do realize this isn't an accurate representation of how that kit sounds IRL right? The camcorders around this time had very poor mics for live recordings I know this because I was in a band in 93' and have recorded footage of my drums, which sound horrible and nothing like what they actually sounded like IRL I'm certain that kit sounded incredible in person without mics, that was my dream kit, it was a beautiful custom Ludwig kit
What a horrible loss :( The man was truly one of the greatest of all time and I feel so lucky to have grown up as they were live and progressing. God bless....
I can forever wonder in his spectacular talent and fluid rhythm.he is the professor and aDr. because he fill our prescription for the best mood lifter in the world 🌎...music.hes always around just push play!
I, like many, studied the rush songs note for note....hour after hour....day after day....big money was certainly on the list.....could not get enough. In retrospect I wish I would have spent more time studying other great drummers and musicians in general. But finally figuring out a tough time change passage or intricate bit of independence on a rush song was always quite an accomplishment and definitely a whole lot of fun. I can't believe the amount of musicians this band inspired. Just phenomenal. RIP Neil.
I started to watch his left foot, looking for when he hits the trigger. I noticed that he would take his foot off the trigger, and instead of putting it down next door on the hi hat pedal, he would sometimes go past it to the left kick pedal. He didn't play it, just seemed to set his foot there for a second before going to the hats, or back to the trigger. You can see it repeatedly from 3:30 - 4:00. Wonder why he did that?
@@michaelroecker2649 Neil's Ludwigs that he is playing here were Neil's best sounding live kit. Get a clue. You are basing your opinion on a drum clinic taped by a VHS recorder? LMAO

Really gets Next Level creative at 2:35. This is about as crude of a recording as you could get and it still sounds pristine. Has an effect triggered by his left foot. Guessing the middle position in between that and the bass drum is just a resting spot?
i never noticed his left foot seemed to be hitting someone further left than his hi hat every once in a while. Was that a trigger of something? And i noticed a few double bass drum moments as well.

Granted, he's not as open as Geddy & Alex, but he's reserved & fame can get to a person like Neil. I'm sure he appreciated his fan in his own guarded way.
The Big Money was one of his best drum arrangements. So detailed but so slick.
The coolest drum arrangements EVER. Neil is the GOAT.

It is just ridiculous how good he is
Neil pounded those drums.
WHOLE. LEE. SHIT!
The power.
The precision.

Neil Peart was a drum machine and lyricist all in one! Simply the best!🥁😔
Wow that is incredible what a technician!!
Man, imagine playing with that heat underneath you. Geddy and Alex were lucky!

His technique where he reversed his drumsticks for heavier blows really shows here. He wasn't called The Professor for no reason.
