Being the extremely happy owner of a 2019 Gear Up, after owning 12 motorcycles (the last one being a R1200GS).
I can attest to the amazing experience these old school machines deliver.
You don’t quick shift these bikes, rather the gearbox has to be eased through the gears….so satisfying. The basic uncomplicated nature of this machine is its charm. No high tech wizardry here, just enough modern tech to make it reliable but low tech enough to make it an empirical and grin inducing experience.
Forget everything you know (have learned) on 2 wheels.
Prepare to go nowhere fast, but to get there feeling so cool.

Fair assessment from you. I have a Ural 2015 GU I’ve owned 2 years now. Live in Omaha and have traveled to Pikes Peak (2 days) journey back roads. No issues except she is slow! Only maintenance issues rear wheel cracked… replacement was $780. Crazy! Gas light is supposed to blink or stay illuminated when down to reserve…nope. Not on my bike, btw Average kilometers per tank is 268…that’s when I ran out of fuel. EFI u need to cycle key off and on 3x at 10 sec each turn. Trust me on this! Prepare for UDF (Ural Delay Factor) every time I get gas someone comes up and ask questions about her. Correction on the kick starter if the battery is dead it will not start w kick starter. Perhaps someone with stronger leg can do it but in my experience it’s a no go! My other bike is a BMW r1200gs that’s my distance bike.
Lastly the real reason I bought the Ural is that I’m getting old and w this bike I don’t have to worry about balance or putting my foot down at stops!😜

I’ve the same year and model. Also had the wheel issue cracking.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON REAR SWING ARM.
It wouldn’t be a bad idea to order a older used or newer replacement swing arm.
Mine snapped upon acceleration from a stop. Wasn’t even an excessive acceleration. It can snap on the right side of the swing arm, couple inches forward from the axle. Highly recommend joining the SovietSteeds forum. Search for “rear swing arm snapped”.
My replacement was less than $100 bucks off eBay.

I've been intrigued with these bikes. Found out I have a dealership about 20-25 miles away from me. I live in Southern Illinois and I'am fortunate to live around many State Parks and Fish and Wildlife areas. I could do some extensive exploring with this machine. My riding partner...my dog would love this!

Those lower Shields are mud guards and not simply to deflect air. They also protect your legs from thorny bushes.
The kick start is not simply a backup for starting the engine. You should kick over the engine 3 kick's before turning on the ignition and starting the engine with the electric start motor. The engine oil pump only supplies oil to places where it can lubricant bearings and valve components. Kicking the engine over pumps oil up into the engine preluding engine part's and immediately starts oiling engine parts on engine start without delay.
Always keep the engine oil level topped off. It only holds 2 liter's of oil so even if the oil level is just slightly below the full line you should add the small amount of oil to get it back to the full line before starting the days adventure.
Never ride with an uncovered, empty sidecar. You will end up with a stranger in it whenever sitting at stops or in stopped traffic. The sidecar is large and easy to enter and attracts adventurous people to it.

Good review. I own a Ural classic retro from 2018. It's a city type Ural without 2wd and smaller wheels but different gear ratio so I can theoretically do 130 kph on motorways plus its made to look like the original M72 from the 1940ies. It's great fun and I use it on a dayly basis throughout the year. Allow me to mention one important thing that got a bit lost in your presentation in my opinion: contrary to normal bikes I use my rear brake far more frequently than my front brake, There are two brake discs at the rear so Ural rear brakes are much more effective than on my standard motorbike and the tendency to break left if you apply your front brakes too hard can be very dangerous since it can pull you directly into oncoming traffic. Braking creates this tendency in general but it's more pronounced if you use o your front brake as main brake

I love my Ural tourist Sidecar motorcycle my 1999 motorcycle has been very reliable and since my last accident where I got hit by a car on my BMW it has been my only means of transportation for the last few years I have over 40,000 miles on it and all of the Soviet built Original Part are still in good working order the only Japanese part on my motorcycle are the Mikuni carburetors and those are great carbs even the Harley Fanatics use them I paid $4,000 for my bike in running condition and it had all the options making it even better value for the money it had a couple of mechanical issues relating to age which I rectified myself because none of the hundred dollar an hour Harley mechanics would even do a simple job on that bike even if they had nothing to do it may have taken me five times longer to do a one-hour job but being retired I have lots of time and no money at being on Social Security $100 an hour shop time is not an option I have watched videos of urals having engines completely taken apart to replace damaged bearings and then they just put the engine back together easy peasy no issues simple and strong engine I don't need to go lane-splitting at 100 miles an hour to have fun on my motorcycle and I don't need to go sliding down the road either when I am in the slow lane and someone Paces me in the fast lane next to me I know that I'm being videotaped I've had women come up to me and tell me what a cute motorcycle I have and I tell them do you want to go for a ride but most of them have a husband who would object you can carry loads with a sidecar outfit that if you try to carry on a solo motorcycle would make it look like a pack mule from the 1890s very overloaded and unsafe I actually got pulled over by a sheriff for dawdling and we ended up talking about the virtues of a Ural motorcycle because she was looking to buy one because the officer had his lights on no one packed him and traffic was backed up all the way back to the bridge because we sat there and chatted for 20 minutes about Ural motorcycles when I looked back and saw cars as far as the eye can see I laughingly told the officer we better get moving we laughed and what about our day every big party I go to I get my picture and Biker magazines because I have the coolest bikes there everybody has a Harley including me I have a Sportster with 350,000 Mi on it on the original engine I might put it back on the road if a doctor lets me go back to having the two wheeler I never thought I would use my sidecar outfit for everyday transportation but it has been more than reliable and everybody knows me because of the bike I bought a new bike catch my collection last year and when I went to tell the guy my address he said that's okay I know where you live because people see the bike parked outside my house regular people stop cutting the grass look up and wave as you drive by or Flash use a thumbs up people who pass you because everybody will pass you other than a moped they flashing the thumbs-up instead of the middle finger I hit a big wild pig with my sidecar outfit and just dented the paint on the front fender because he was almost clear of me I heard of a guy in Canada who clobbered a moose with one and then he took a 4 by 4 post and pound it out the nose of the sidecar which was caved in from the impact I know a guy who had a Mercedes pull out right in front of him and he caught the sidecar with the front of his car and it destroyed his Mercedes the guy with the sidecar rode his bike home 800 lb of heavy Soviet steel and three wheels gives you a very comfortable feeling and people in cars more than they do a regular motorcycle I have people wave neon I have people wave at me because they see it better than a solo bike you just have to convince women that the site card does not go Rolling Along by itself because that only happens in the movies

It's a pretty interesting bike, the one thing that I'd have a bit of an issue with is that there's no fuel gauge on it, only a "Low Fuel" warning light
Having the sidecar with it's own driveshaft setup makes this pretty useful for off-road riding, despite the overall additional drag it produces

    • @RidgeRoamer
      @RidgeRoamer  Год назад +3

Low fuel light isn't an issue. I've had a bunch of bikes with just that, and you just get in the habit of resetting the trip meter when you fill up and watching how many miles you have on that tank. And yes, with the 2 wheel drive, this thing is a beast off road!

The motor cycle does not have a differential. It has a crown and pinion that drive the motor cycle rear wheel. Then you engage the sidecar. That means both wheels drive no differential slip solid 2 wd. They are difficult to turn in mud or snow. Traction yes. steering not great. That engine sound is terrible he is thrashing the poor thing it is a vintage slow design Id treat it as such.

You can NOT kick start these EFI Urals When the battery is Dead 3:14 ...!! ❌
But you may e able to kickstart it if the battery don’t quite have enough juice to turnover the starter, it depends. 🤷🏻‍♂️ for the most part it seems like you have to have at least 11 to 11.5 Volts for the fuel pump and computer, injectors, and plugs to fire 🔥 But IF you can get it running the alternator should keep it running until you get home.

Of course the Ural if not a Powerhouse it is made to carry three Soldiers with full battle gear and an ammunition cart and an 88 mm Howitzer cannon and of course you're chasing the French who are running away as always but then that's the French for you how can the Mexican celebrate being defeated by the French were they all passed out on tequila and the French just walked in while they were passed out? Of course it is known that that's the only time the French one anyting in Wartime that is! The French actually made BMW copies after day exhausted the BMW Army parts supplies in France but the French army and police would rather have real german-made BMW stand French ones they actually asked the Allies to let the BMW go back to making big motorcycles because they wanted to buy them how bad does a motorcycle have to be that your own police and military would rather buy them from your former enemy t h a n from you

Fun and cool bikes . too bad they are built so poorly and require so much maintenance. super expensive for what they are. I have a friend who was a dealer. He said the first thing they do before they are even sold is pull the junk wheel bearings and replace with good quality ones.
