Hello from Russia 😁 I had an Ural once) There is a statement about Ural motorcycle engines: “if there is no oil leakage from the engine, there is no oil in the engine.” This video was awesome! 👏 Thank you!

I owned one for 5 years and it was the THE MOST FUN motorcycle I ever owned. Was it comfortable? No. Fast? No. Smooth? Nope. Reliable? Well, mostly. But it was very practical for grocery runs, carrying lawnmowers and 5 gallon pails of paint or roofing tar. 80 pound bags of concrete...no problem. 8 foot long 2x4s...again, no problem. Riding in the snow? More fun than the law should allow! Me and two gals going for a ride around town? FUN! Flying the chair at Sturgis? Even MORE FUN. But beware, UDF (Ural Delay Factor) is REAL...most of your time stopping anywhere will be occupied by strangers asking questions. If you are shy around strangers, this is NOT the bike for you!

My dad had one when I was like 7. We took it to his friend’s house about 10 miles away for Easter that year. Riding home late at night it had started to snow, and we were both freezing in the wind. We ended up getting stopped to wait for a train for what felt like forever lol. Okay, this _entire video_ is a _spot on_ Wes Anderson homage, and the fact that only like three of the comments even acknowledge the influence is downright criminal. The camera work, the shot composition, the sound design, the editing, the acting, the intertitles, the script... It's enough that this guy puts so much effort into his "normal" videos, but this is a 10+ minute opus and it deserves to be appreciated.

I always hankered after one of these. The 2WD version. My late father acquired one in Falaise in the Summer of 1944 and kept it (as a scout vehicle) until a new CO as they entered Germany said that it would "look bad" if he kept it and it would give the impression that Germany had better equipment than the Allies. His view at the time was that they did.... So he dumped the BMW and the German side arm, with regret. He spoke about that combination with enormous affection. 2WD with a differential gear and (Mirabile Dictu) exhaust pipes playing across the handlebar for those cold Ardennes winter rides. I am old and tired now, but still secretly hanker after one of these.... Good video.

Being Russian, I should admit, that this is the best 10-min review of Ural bike, and, surely, one of the most entourage, served with correct sentiment.
One more thing: more than a half of total Ural’s production is being exported, while there are lots of soviet-times Urals in Russia. They’re REALLY cheap. I mean you can buy one in less than a 500$, and good quality, almost restored exemplars are sold below 2000$. So this is a real killer-motorcycle in here)))

Hell yes, Ural! That brings back happy memories.
I used to ride a considerably older model (no engine lights to annoy you) that I absolutely loved. The right cylinder head would reliably rattle itself loose, I ended up carrying a wrench on me to tighten the nut every 100km or so (say at a stop light). It was really good at getting me where I wanted to go, provided that was straight and not too fast. When I took the bike over it had been standing in a garage for 10 years, with fuel in the tank. It started with that same fuel, though changing the dead battery involved taking half the bike apart.
Also, the little boot is the precise size of a standard German crate of beer. Coincidence? I think not!

    • @johnevans7261
      @johnevans7261 2 года назад +1

That was the rocker cover, not the cylinder head. I ended up using Aerotight nuts on the studs that held them so I'd only have to use that spanner during servicing instead of every few days.

I bought a brand new Gear Up 2WD in 2017. It was culture shock to say the least.
It was plagued with quality control problems from the start including factory installed mismatched pistons and cylinders! It burnt out the fuel injection once, the speedometer 4x, the rear brake and rotor 2x. It took the better part of 2 years to sort out the gremlins.
Now, mostly problem free for many miles now, I love her to death and ride her all the time. She is one of my 8 motorcycles and the one I take shopping or riding my handicapped son and my dogs. Everybody in town knows it's me because you just don't see them much. There are a lot out there, but they are spread around geographically.
Yes, the neutral and fuel lights have minds of their own. I don't care. I can feel neutral, and I know how many miles to expect from the odometer/tripometer as to when I need to fuel up. If I make a mistake, I have 10L of petrol strapped to the sidecar. It is impossible to be stranded for very long due to running out of fuel. I also have a towing hitch purpose built for my rig. Makes towing a motorcycle trailer or camper or a small garden trailer, a piece of cake. It's also allowed me to pull others out of being trapped in the snow or off the embankment, etc. I also have a Warn winch on her which allows me to do even more to help myself and others.
This thing is truly functional. Not pretty. Not amazing build quality. Fit and finish is "Meh", but FUNCTIONALITY is unquestionably over the top of literally anything out there. I'm not kidding.
Curiously, I have run into BMW riders with their very expensive and snazzy sidecars, who have said they want to go riding with me. When we head into the real back woods of the U.P. in Michigan or the Black Swamp woods areas of Ohio, they freeze in panic and are unwilling to continue. I turn on my 2 Wheel Drive, wave goodbye and continue on into areas that no other motorcycle in the world is capable of going into, let alone of making it back out of in 1 piece. These things are tanks. Plain and simple. They are also one of the most infectious things you can ever ride and they work their way into your heart very quickly.
I love mine to death and will never sell it. Never.

    "Юшанка"
    "Аварийный бар"
Ah, quality translation in best traditions of Hollywood.
As for "speaking the wrong language" - Urals are actually most sold outside Russia. They were common in USSR since the party dictated the price, not market. After 90s the factory almost closed down, but, fortunately, the bike found it's niche in global market. I applaud the marketing team that could uncover it in the world of "everything should be faster, lighter and with more buttons". Because of all that Ural is still alive. Most Urals in Russia are from soviet era and dirt-cheap. As for newly-produced ones, people cannot get their head around the fact that their cost is similar to japanese bikes, to this day Ural is considered a motorcycle for grandpa living in a farm.
P.S. Russians celebrate РОЖДЕСТВО on 7th of January =)

In the 70s I worked for a company in Edinburgh that imported Urals and Cossack motorbikes, sidecar on the wrong side, for Scotland, and we regularly had to remove a plough attachment from the Ural depending on what model they sent. Fantastic machines and a real blast to ride.

An awesome video! It’s tough to get a biker who has nor ridden a Ural to understand what the real charm to it is, but your video really captured it. You can’t look at it in comparison to a two wheeled bike and then decide between the two. It’s a genre all to its own, brining so much that a two wheeler can’t. Want never ending joy with the kids and grand kids, want your wife to enjoy riding, need help socializing - the delay factor is real! - then a Ural is your thing.

It must be my birthday or something. An F9 video about Ural! It is my birthday!
Great job. I had a 2014 Ural Patrol and oh what fun was it to ride. Problem is, maybe I rode it too much because I had too many of those 10,000 km scheduled catastrophic failures. I know you were having fun with that statistic, but it’s no laughing matter. Let’s see, three years of ownership and went through one left cylinder and piston, The whole left head really. Three clutches and three gearboxes. A snapped swing arm. I’m not sure the total km because the odometer catastrophically failed right before 33,333 km. And an electric starter. I only got rid of the bike because the three year warranty was due to expire and I knew I couldn’t afford to live with that bike without the warranty. I’d say I got rid of it with close to 50,000 km. And in that three years and 50,000 km, the bike ran about 1.5 years. About half the time I was waiting fir parts or for the dealership to fix the bike after one of the failures. Maybe I was just an extremely hard Ural rider, but I figure a catastrophic failure about every 6250 km. That’s not taking into consideration all the minor niggles like quirky electrical systems that may or may not work at any given time, clutch cables regularly breaking, a final drive that required far more attention than any chain I’ve ever used. One time I turned on the key and there were flames and white smoke coming from under the front of the fuel tank. I shut off the key and the smoke and flames disappeared. I went and got a fire extinguisher and turned the key on again and nothing happened that wasn’t supposed to happen. And that never happened again. Of course a fire extinguisher was kept in the sidecar from then on.
But other than all that, what a fun bike. If it had a forever warranty (no kidding, they totally honored that warranty) I’d have kept my Ural. I never would have tried a cross country trip with it again (waiting for parts and replacing the clutch on the side of the road 1500 miles from home and with your 12 year old daughter sucks). But for riding the local backroads on the weekend, it’s tough to beat.
Look up “Ural Patrol racing a train” to see the typical riding I did with mine

    • @ironit2003

This motorcycle is not for such distances and runs.
In Soviet Russia, it was used as a cheap alternative to a car. Plus good roadability on bad roads (including forest ones)
In the Urals, it was possible to bring firewood, water, bread ..
Possibility to ride mushrooms or berries in the nearest forest
Now the Urals are not popular in Russia, they are almost nonexistent. Old extinct, new too expensive.
So the Russian Urals will soon become completely non-Russian (they sell it mainly to America and similar countries) but not to Russia.

Years a go a friend of mine bought a cheap Ural (His was branded Dnepr) with a side car, the version he got was the one with 2 separate spring seats (as depicted in the graph paper top down view). Man it was a weird experience being in the side car, and riding the damn thing, and yeah, had the same feeling during braking and pulling away lol. He took the chair off and let me ride it again, and, well, 'A form' or 'Normality' returned. One of the most fun videos you have made. I wanted to ride a friend's BMW with an attached Steg sidecar, but my friend was afraid I would wreck it. So, I bought a Motorvation sidecar (the very large fiberglass one with a fixed wind shield and a wheel and tire that would hold up a Toyota Carolla) and hanged it on to my poor Suzuki GS 850. It was easy to attach or detach with the optional roll away frame work, and I taught myself to ride a side car. I met my friend with the BMW side hack rig a few weeks later and when he rode the thing, he said that it handled better than his BMW. After my new wife and I went on a short road trip. Coming home on the interstate, we were bucking a 35 MPH head wind, with the throttle locked open in third gear, and my right foot pushing against the right handlebar to keep it on the road, while new wife and I screamed at each other through the slip stream. Traded the rig for a Fiat 124 Spyder. I really don't miss the rig. Well, maybe a little.

I utterly love my 2009 Ural Tourist. Alas with the sidecar on the left here in Australia, we've only recently gotten 2wd. I still have managed to take it on epic trips through the country, through the desert, and over the highest snow-covered road in Australia (not that high, but we try). The previous owner circumnavigated the country in it, and I'd say a second round trip with me riding will be in its future sometime. Glory to the mighty Ural!
