And if they are happy enough to post the results (let alone being confident enough to even do so), who has the right to insult their art? Live and let live. Don't be a douche. It's not that hard.

There's a distinct difference between critique and being a jerk. Just pointing at a paint job and going "Lol, awful" is being a jerk. Offering constructive criticism on how to approve while also pointing out what they're doing right is critique. For that Jenner it looks like they're thinning their paints properly and they've chosen complimentary colors, red and green, which work well together. Plus even attempting free-handing is a good thing. Honestly I'd say to brighten up the red and get some highlights and shadows going. Right now it's a dark basecoat, so really punching up the red into something vibrant and then adding edge highlights would take it to the next level.
I haven't played Battletech in like 30 years (I'm a 40k man now) but even there, my rule of thumb is to always find SOMETHING to compliment on the paint job, no matter how good or otherwise it might be. Even something as simple as "I like how that color combination" goes a long way.
@@calebharris292 That's what also struck me, painting those tiny Kanji that well is by no means a small feat. I'm a very confident mini painter myself and I would sweat bullets trying to paint that half as neat.
I'm still fairly new to painting BattleTech, however, my thoughts on paint shamers is the same as art shamers, they fall into one of two camps: the snobish elite who are so high and mighty that their raw talent has made them blind to everything around them, including and especially reading the room when they rip into a fan of their work, or the other is someone who has no talent but projects their ineptitude onto others to make themselves feel better out of some sense of delusional narcissism, and for reference, i have been painting BattleTech minis for a little over a year now, but I've been drawing character art and pinups for close to 20 years now edit: also @stephan_amaris' Jenner is fucking kickass, anyone who can paint something that fucking tiny freehand has a bright future ahead of them
The underhanded comment from them afterwards just add to the sliminess. Playing with painted or unpainted miniatures is not part of the equation. If someone wants to paint miniatures and encourage others to do so, that's great. Some people should simply not be on social media.

That model is most likely from the 25th Anniversary starter set. You got loads of models in that, but their details were very soft (apart from the two "premium" mechs). Painting those models were pretty tough, the poster did a fine job considering the quality of the model. The Jenner and catapult in particular were bad.
11:00 Not to mention that it's a modern high detail sculpt too. A good paintjob on a shit vintage sculpt can only go so far. Lipstick on a pig and all that.
Correct. While I love the old sculpts some of them take a LOT of work to make presentable. Many have soft details worn away by the passage of time or mold slips/poorly placed gates/etc. Modern CGL minis don't have that.
@@TheSixthWorld I bought a pile of books, maps and minis for $50 a bit over a month ago. I have 2 of these Jenners that I plan to paint up soon. Most of the minis are old ones like this and some mid metals.
This video pretty much covers what needs to be said. However, I want to add that there's something special about seeing a painted army on the tabletop. Whatever the skill level of the paint job. It takes time and effort, you can even say a piece of yourself, to paint your models. This is why having a fully painted and based army feels like such an accomplishment. Heck, I think everyone at some point played with or had someone in their gaming group who had unpainted minis. Yet, when that painting journey started more units/squads and more models were painted making you more connected with the hobby and those you shared it with. Besides it's not like anyone can't go back to any model they've previously painted, do some touch-ups, or strip them and repaint if they want down the road if they feel like they've improved and can do a better paint job.
They make me very angry. Also this makes me look bad for promoting Catalyst to my customers. Not a happy LGS worker when I see crap like this. Also, I'm going to disagree with your assessment. I think the Jenner that was shamed was better than the Jenner that was new sculpt. I too have one of those plastic jenners and they are not easy to make look good. That one looked good. Therefore it is in my view better painted than the new-sculpt Jenner, which can be achieved with some modern contrast paints and a bit of touch up after just a few short hours work. Good video, this needs to be called out.
Im gonna politely disagree with 1 thing. Valks jenner doesnt look professional to me. It looks like contrast paint a wash and dry brush. I can nearly promise i can recreate it. No attempts on that mech at kanji or osl. Just a 2 hour paint job. Which is fine if youre not being a dick.
It doesn't matter what the paint job looks like to me as long as you at least tried can't tell you how many times I've walked in to the game store only to see a bunch of grey plastic on the battlefield
Just for devil's advocacy, I think Valk's point was that the #paintyourminis twitter thing was itself mocking people that don't paint their mechs. That's the only sensible reason I can imagine why he posted the professionally painted mini while talking about how people that mock unpainted plastic are free game to be mocked. Still shitty behavior and a muddled message at best.
@@StefanAmarisDidNothingWrong I'd agree with that assessment entirely. I can't resist the opportunity to do the devil's work, nothing more and nothing less. Beautiful freehand work, by the by.

It's tough to tell from the picture, but that Jenner is probably from the 2007 Intro box, which were pretty rough sculpts from the jump. They had a later Intro box with upgraded sculpts from similar sources that were a big improvement but still on the half hexes, but I don't think this is one of those. I've painted this model (not the pictured one, I'm not brave enough to try to freehand logos, either) and it's a challenge to make it look cool. Putting the current plastics up against ones old enough to drive based on sculpts from the early 90s is a lousy thing to do, regardless of talent levels.
I'm far and away the best painter in my group, so much so that a few of the other lads I game with are often embarrassed to show me their painted minis because they aren't on the same level. Every single time I make sure to tell them that they did a great job, because they are always all painting up to their skill level, they are all improving over time, and the only time I even offer constructive criticism is when they ask. Insulting painting unprompted is imo the worst thing you can do in the hobby. Like worse than outright cheating. We're all here to have fun, don't be a dick.
Saw a clip the other day of a dude painting all his orcs by smashing blood red. It's not gonna stand up to a proper paint job but it's in theme and saved him literally a day in time to do other hobby stuff. Wouldn't disparage anyone for using more basic paint, I'm pedantic with my paint jobs and that's a level of stress I don't wish upon anyone.
I agree as we all have to start somewhere. Most of these guys who criticize painting are bad painters themselves. As a really good painter I love helping out new players and giving painting tips. only exception to this is if it is someone who can do better but won't or do not paint them because they are lazy. honestly would rather see .unpainted models a than a model some purposely did the bare minimum on.
I totally agree with you here, not everyone is a genius painter, it takes a lot of practice to get even decent. I'm around table-top standard, but I certainly don't criticise anothers work. I think he did a pretty decent job on what's not a great mini anyway......that plastic doesn't like holding onto paint.
I have never understood elitism in hobbies. I really don't get it in any context, but especially hobbies. We're supposed to be doing this to relax and enjoy ourselves. Chill out and let people show off their crappy paint jobs.

They're very hit and miss. I've seen some that are almost mint condition that look great. I've seen others that I was shocked they passed quality control. Either way, though, I grew up with those minis and I love seeing them in the wild.
I don't do much Battletech content, but I'm finding myself diving deeper into the game I grew up with. I'll definitely be doing more stuff in the future.
Imagine being arrogant and delusional enough to proclaim a basically painted, barely tabletop standard model was “how it’s done!” (and if that’s ‘professional’ work someone’s paying far too much). I’m guessing Valk is a medium fish in a small puddle.
I am not a fan of battletech there miniatures are very low detail and quality to me in general. That being said. Nobody should be shamed for participating in a hobby. Like my grandma says. If you cant say something nice stfu.
I wasn't rude about it. I encourage people to paint because it's part of the hobby. I would never kick someone from a table or bully them for not painting. I find painting enjoyable and advocate for painting because it's fun.
The issue i have with your issue is it do not help people to get better at painting. It comforts them in their mediocrity. 20 years ago, it would have been ok to paint like this. No information, no good painting gear etc.... But in 2024, with all the tutorials and examples available thanks to internet and YT, unless you are a small child or a young teen, you have no excuses. This miniature is not cheap, the paint you use is not cheap, why not try your best ? Doing a good base coat and a wash is not complicated and do not take too long to do. The tweet could have been followed by more constructive criticism, but a good dose of mockery can help people get their shit together and get better.
Hey, we've got someone with the "your fun is wrong" card again... Dude, let people paint their toys however they want, if it displeases your fair eyes, just look elsewhere...views like yours are just annoying...!
"If you don't do it the way I think you should, you're doing it wron-" No. Shut up. Be quiet. Maybe dude has one hour a week to get something painted between work and childcare and he's taken the time to get paint on a mini, is pleased he got a model done, and is sharing a photo. Don't be an arsehole.
I agree, ...with the guy who made the tweet. If you cant take criticism and cant tell that mini looks like dogpoo in general then you have a lot to learn. What is stopping you from cleaning it up and starting over? Is selfimprovement less impotrant now than empty selfcongratulatory contentment? Paint shaming feels like the kind of shit an out of place school bully does for no reason other than just be mean, if he painted that Jenner himself then thats a shame cuz no amount of skill is going to help him with a shitty attitude, just an unpleasant thing person.
It's not bad, the Kanji is pretty darn good tbh!
Insulting painting unprompted is imo the worst thing you can do in the hobby. Like worse than outright cheating. We're all here to have fun, don't be a dick.
That Jenner is from the boxed sets that came from just before the current AGOAC box.
Yyeeaahh, it isn't exactly a pretty mini. But I appreciate the fine work the painter did with the kanji script on it.
Agree, be nice to people try to include them not scare them away.
Agree 100% People have different degrees of skill, as long as there painted and you like em it doesn’t matter.
Well said! this valk guy is gonna run himself right out of the fandom he is failing to take control of. Keep it up!
He goes by "Robin Briseno".
I have never understood elitism in hobbies. I really don't get it in any context, but especially hobbies. We're supposed to be doing this to relax and enjoy ourselves. Chill out and let people show off their crappy paint jobs.
Everyone started somewhere and has differing skill levels. Shaming people for it only drives people AWAY from the hobby.
Battletech is damn hard to paint well. They're 6mm and arent designed like modern gw stuff to pull paint into recesses.
i do 40k and AOS and the first thing i lernend and its so obvius is neve ever insault sobodyelses mini painting. if thay ask for fead back give construktiv advise.
5:00 - I dunno man, I have those 3rd Edition minis, including a set that are still on the sprue, and they look WAY better than that Jenner.
They're very hit and miss. I've seen some that are almost mint condition that look great. I've seen others that I was shocked they passed quality control.
Either way, though, I grew up with those minis and I love seeing them in the wild.
Moms know when they breed talent 😆
Glad I found another good BT content channel.
Ah yes. The dude who has been rude about people not painting their minis got called his are dog shit. Lol
I wasn't rude about it. I encourage people to paint because it's part of the hobby. I would never kick someone from a table or bully them for not painting. I find painting enjoyable and advocate for painting because it's fun.
"Yeah he was paint shamed but he's a jerk so it's ok" is certainly one take...
who gets to say what's rude, who's rude to who? why are you enabling paint shaming?
cope harder tourists
You're allowed to have an opinion even if it's wrong.
Hey, we've got someone with the "your fun is wrong" card again...
Dude, let people paint their toys however they want, if it displeases your fair eyes, just look elsewhere...views like yours are just annoying...!
"If you don't do it the way I think you should, you're doing it wron-"
No. Shut up.
Not surprised the world is going to shit if people continually defend incompetence...
It's okay to be wrong.
