I’ve had a lot of fun playing Rifts, but most of that is despite the book/system. Rifts is an immutable document etched in stone. They’ll never clean up the clunky rules, pare down the number of skills, trade in the all Times New Roman layout for something easier on the eyes, or get rid of the Satanic Panic-era content warning in the front. But the kinds of games you can play in this setting are a lot of fun. I really need to get around to reading Savage Rifts to see what they’ve done with it.

We're using ShadowFate. It's got direct analogues from sr5 to fate that makes it simple to convert. Our group is continuing the work begun in 2017 by the original author with his blessing to further flesh it out. The Sprawl was a close second for swapping systems for us, but it didn't quite capture the feel. Technoir is super-neat, but would require writing a whole new hack before getting it to the table.

My favorite rpg book of all time was the original Seattle sourcebook. It had such a good style. The ads they put in it gave it so much flavor.

Rifts= Robocop and Merlyn fighting side by side against Cobra. No, it wasn't WW3, it was a small skirmish between 2 countries. Yes nukes were used, but that was just the match that set fireworks off. And yes, definitely give it another try.

Just discovered this ttrpg figured I’d check it out.

I don't understand the bundle very well. Do you also get the dice and box or is it just the digital pdf copy? Some games now uses special dice that only comes from them. Dragonbane also says comes with a big map. So if this is digital only then how well can you enjoy the games? Not to mention that printing the pages is smaller then the actual copy. It is a good bundle but it lacks the details of the actual purchase.

The first SR book I ever saw was 1st edition. It was really interesting, but being early teens (heck, might have even been 11 or 12, I can't remember) and not having anyone who actually knew how to play the game, we committed a cardinal sin and converted it Palladium mechanics. The only thing we knew (aside from 1e and 2e D&D), and it's one of the worst systems out there. I DID just say we were early teens though... 3rd is my favorite edition by a hair, 2nd was great too. I'm probably going to be the next GM when my group finishes our Cyberpunk Red campaign, which means we're playing Shadowrun. 3rd edition, but I'm going to fix the biggest mistake that they made with that edition and use the initiative system from 2e. Because someone with wired reflexes or a move-by-wire system SHOULD a fraggin' dangerous, someone who can shoot you and your three buddies before any of you clear your holster. It makes people think really hard about whether they want to tangle with that wired sam. I looked at 4e, 5e, and 6e, and they didn't appeal at all. I don't want to roll 35 dice, and WTF is the deal with "You have to get 19 successes or you fail"? No, just no. 4e and on was made for the same crowd that like D&D 5e, people that are so afraid of math a simple equation has them hiding under their bed, wetting themselves. If you can't do simple addition and subtraction to figure out your target number, you shouldn't be playing TTRPG's, you should be taking remedial math classes.

The deals on humble bundle are so good that I feel like I'm stealing. I'll be getting this for the Coriolis books, been meaning to get into that for a while now. Especially, after I've backed the The Great Dark kickstarter.

Coming in late I know, but as others have brought up, they have Rifts for the Savage Worlds RPG system. The Kickstarter you saw most likely was one of several they ran for the SW version of Rifts. You'll find plenty of Classic Rifts fans doing reviews for SW Rifts and most of them say they now prefer to run using Savage Worlds. You can also find Sprawlrunners for Savage Worlds. That one the writer admits it was basically his way of running Shadowrun in Savage Worlds.

I've been into the setting and lore since I was a teenager, but had a similar experience to you. I tried going back to the well a few times, with no success. Finally, I tried Savage Worlds' version of RIFTS and finally made it work. Now I'm a big fan!

Like someone else in the chat said. SAVAGE RIFTS. All the amazing Rifts lore, running on a good system. And SW Bennies were made for a setting like Rifts.

Played & ran 1st to 5th editions; missed out 4th though. After running 5th I returned to 3rd ed. IMO magic in 5th has been severely weakened; the idea that shamans can now conjure fire spirits just no. And a hermetic magician can have a totem.. sorry mentor spirit - again no. Regarding the force of spells in 5th : it has no real bearing on how hard it is to resist. It's just a spellcasting vrs will/logic/body etc & a success test. The whole limits introduced in 5th was so bizarre. No one ever hit their limits even with 18 dice. I've never had a problem with the crunch; that doesn't mean I know all the rules; I know enough not to slow the game down too much.

Also hot take here. The plot of ff7 can easily he converted into a shdowrun game with minor edits here and there.

I found Shadowrun 1e when I was in my mid-teens and by age 18 I had it tattooed to the side of my head. No, really -- that illustration of the Undercover Cop from Sprawl Sites? The tatt he had on the side of his head? That one :) Decades later I now run the Classic Shadowrun discord which has been quite a lively community for the past 5ish years. And I am nearly finished completing my collection of 1e and 2e sourcebooks. The community is super vibrant and amazingly nontoxic, it practically runs itself while I play WoW Classic hahaha. For me 1e is the best edition because its diverse systems represent the lore so perfectly. It really feels like the lore drives the rules rather than the other way around. I like 2e and 3e but I felt like 2e started drifting towards a "same-y-ness" with static TN's, static staging for weapons, etc -- and a bit too much gamification with the switch to Combat Pool and specifically the ability to use a pool for extra offensive dice -- as well as the separate Karma Pool. It just feels a lot less gritty that way to me. My take-away is that 2e and 3e were increasingly designed to appeal to D&D players, and then AD&D players. Which is fine, it grew the brand's fanbase and undoubtedly led to Shadowrun's overall place in the top 5 ttrpg brands today. With 4e I felt like the style lost its unique direction and [insert 726 pages of trash-talk about 5e and 6e here]. Also 4e had that horrid font choice, tiny font size, and so it was an actual headache to read. I prefer basic systems where the sourcebooks are optional, and 2e and 3e increasingly drifted away from that, rolling in most of the previous sourcebook materials and (imo) bloating the page count, making the system less approachable for me personally. Obviously thicker book = higher investment to begin playing, or at least the perception of such. And as a lifelong I.T. nerd the 1e matrix works for me much better than later editions. I feel like it's way more retro-future with its Tron aesthetic, and also somewhat more accurate to reality where you have to gain access to each discrete component/subsystem bit by bit in a fashion dictated by system architecture, rather than just being a big room with various functions attached. I do sometimes greatly enjoy the more 90's retrofuture aesthetic of 3e's matrix, though, so I kind of blend them when I GM. Sculpted systems are fun. But I definitely won't ever say the classic editions are perfect. FASA was notorious for poor information organization, burying general rules in the fluff of a hyper-specific section, rules and examples that contradict each other, and so on. I actually buckled down a few years ago and wrote what I call "Concisionrun" - a concise (roughly 40 page) rewrite of the 1e rulebook's most important, hardest to grok parts, plus super short summaries of things like the lore and the typical game loop. It was a fun project, and apparently people are using it. I also created a discord dicebot for the classic editions that does all the expected things (exploding dice, non-exploding rolls with modifiers, success tests, opposed tests, initiative for 1e-3e) and then some (macros, prepared passages of text created in a hidden channel but deployed in the public channel, ammo tracking, reminders over DM, backwards initiative for 1e-3e, initiative for Cyberpunk 2020 and Cyberpunk Red). I recently reconnected with 2 of my childhood gaming buddies and rejoined their table, which just celebrated its 14th anniversary of playing ttrpg's almost every Sunday... and I'm up to GM soon :) They've agreed to give me 1-2 years to run Shadowrun 1e and I could hardly be more excited!
