What a chub! Great vid as always Chris. Some of those bigger Perch were stunning and the upper single Pike was a nice suprise, but that Chub was fantastic. A real big unit. Congrats for that beastie.☺ It just shows how deadly fishing with small lures can be on rivers.

I enjoyed the video. We used to fish like that here in Mid Wales 35 years ago, we'd use the smallest Mepps spinner out "00" I believe are the smallest. Also we used to scratch off the dots if they had red or blue dots. For some reason plain silver normally works best for trout and gold was better for chub but I imagine it depends on what's in the river at the time. Congratulations on the sponsorship. I like Rapala baits, I remember watching Matt Hayes years ago and they often did a talk on their baits.
New here, but liked youre style and subscribed. Watching this made me feel like the fishing youtubers I used to enjoy have drifted too far from why I started watching them. Glad to have found your channel.
Bad angling practice. With two trebles in its throat that pike is dead if it bites through the fluorocarbon leader. Use a wire trace if there are so many pike in a water, or at the very least change out the trebles for a large single.
Absolutely agree. Great vid, but 14lb flurocarbon? With pike about that is playing Russian roulette. What is wrong with some 12lb Soft steel or 12lb titanium? Beautiful old warrior of a Chub though
Mate, this isn't a complaint, just you seem to care about the fish you catch. Get yourself some decent (like I mean decent) forceps and keep them clean. Fish are very susceptible to infections, and with all the barbs on the hooks etc it's not hard to imagine what rusty old pliers might be doing. Nice rod, reel and line, time to add some decent forceps (also good ones will surprise you how much easier it is to unhook, get a straight nose pair, and a bent nose pair, and the best part is you just clamp them on to your clothing when you aren't using them, they aren't going to fall off on you).. [edit] Just wanted to say that the reason I say "Decent" forceps isn't because they will be better than naff ones medically, it's just that the proper surgical ones have amazing grip, and don't pop open on you.
I use surgical magil forceps, I have a portable autoclaver to make sure the forceps are sterile, I also don theatre blues and a surgical mask.🤣 it’s a fish that lives in a river surrounded by all sorts of pathogens, it probably has an open wound in that environment every day of its life. On a serious note that was a great video.👍
OUTSTANDING video. Did that first strike startle you as much as me? I love it when they hit the lure as soon as it hits the water. Surface strikes are the best. Have you considered swapping out your treble hooks for singles? I've become almost strictly catch and release lately and it makes un-hooking so much easier. Not to mention that tangle of trebled lures in your box isn't so bad with singles. Again, thanks for sharing your time on the stream.
Chris mate I am enjoying the videos and I am learning a lot about baitcasting with Lures and my new setup is a zebco 12-42 g rod with a okuma ceymar multiplier reel with 39lb sufix braid two rapala lures and a mepps aglia spinner and spin traces and a pike trace
Great video. You are a very talented fisherman and I can see that you care for the fish you catch.Because you catch so many and return all you should really consider putting single hooks on your lures and even making them barbless. You’ll still catch a lot of fish. You will miss a few but you’ll be surprised how many stay on with a single hook and you will damage a lot less fish.
I tend to on my smaller lures with the “double treble” hooks. I do find it makes it much easier for when I get deep choked by a pike more than anything but it is helpful for getting the smaller fish unhooked and back quickly. Saying that, I understand why people don’t do it and have no issue with people who keep their barbs on, I do when I’m pike fishing with bigger lures.
@@RobbieM72 brilliant! Thanks a lot, I’ve been to a few venues and been unable to use my lures as they’re single hook only. Won’t have that trouble any more!
m8 you have best UL youtube channel atm. Great job. I hope I can fish a river like that in the future :D I started making some lures for chub. I am sure they would absolutely destroy them on that river :D
I think every UK fisherman loves to catch a nice perch, they are so redolent of childhood. I remember as a 12 year old catching a half pounder in the canal and thinking it was like a whale.
Some lovely fish there - that Chevin was a pearler! Small observation? - have seen you on this river many times........but never seen another angler on the water?
Fish care should be paramount whilst fishing I'm sure u would catch nearly as many fish on less trebles and more singles.at the end of the day we all should think about catching fish in our future sessions but using all these trebles can damage fish far to much and ppl should at least give single hooks a go.You may lose an odd fish using singles but the welfare of the fish should come first and not someone's Ego fact..!👌
Good session, some nice Perch, decent pike and a monster chub to top it all off, wicked video mate. Love the care you put into unhooking the fish aswell, so many people just yank or cut the line after losing patience with unhooking in awkward places so it's nice to see unhooking safely and correctly with you explaining the process for those who have less experience, nice job Chris.
Yet another mint vid to make me even more jealous river tees has seals that are nuking everything sickening but with nothing else to fish what can ya do keep it up mate I'll be watching 👍
I bought quite a few some years ago as a result of a French angler telling me he caught barbel on his by bumping them on the bottom in weirpools and fast currents. Didn't work for me as yet; they're smaller than you were using.

A perch died while i was fishing a hard bait with treble hooks, as it totally got hooked up badly by 4 of the six hooks, although i got them out the damage was already done, i was wondering if you would do a video where you swapped out your hooks for a single hook to see if it made any difference maybe even barbless ? P.s noticed your using a lot of rapala bait just wanna know do you real catch more fish using these lures and get what you pay for
I've been experimenting with barbless and single hooks for trout fishing using spoon baits. I've found single hooks to work better than barbless. It's easier to actually hook the fish using barbless treble than a single hook, but you pretty much need a net all the time. I lose alot more fish thats already hooked using barbless than single. Single hooks are sometimes pointing the wrong way when attempting to hook and you lose the fish, alteast with a spoon bait. With single hook the fish stays on much better though since you still have a barb on the hook. From my experience single hooks are about 70% as efficient as treble. Barbless about 40%. Fishing perch I always use treble hooks, but id say 1-2 perch each fishing session gets a bad hook and dies. Bigger perch I just take home and eat, the smaller ones are a shame though.
@@Quazkiz thanks for your reply, I think am gonna move to single, I don't know why manufacturers don't always give the angler's a choice on what hook to use, and surely it most cost just that little bit less to make if they didn't have to weald the hooks together in the 1st place
