This scene over the years has lost none of its power, facing the inevitable, growing old, death, losing someone you love it's so universal this scene, still tears me up and am a grown ass man ever since the first time i saw it years ago it still gets me..........
This is truly one of the saddest scenes in cinematic history. Connor defied and ignored Ramirez's advice to leave Heather and spare him the pain of Heather dying and he learns that lesson when Heather died in his arms of old age. Like The Doctor from Doctor Who once said "Immortality is a curse, not a blessing". Storytelling and writing at it's best.
True, but in exchange he spares Heather that same ache of having him leave her life forever, or to die alone. The pain will be there one way or another.
@@korsekil And he had time on his side, & loved her, so he did the right thing, & death is an illusion, this has been understood for millennia, but the current scientific western dogma has brainwashed people to think otherwise.
The scene of Connor burying Heather using his sword as a gravestone and burning the cottage. Of course with Queen in the background... Still hits even after 37 years
RIP My beautiful little sister Heather Died unexpectedly April 2024 aged 28 This was always her favourite Queen song No words just tears. Cancer is so cruel! So bloody cruel!
Yeah me too. Working with old couples taught me that love is very special and rare. They are adorable. Despite trying to run a business Id find myself taking care of them, binning bills. My empathy for them was so deep. I hope most people find that in their lives
I started crying as soon as I heard the song, as a highlander kid it was swords and chopping off the heads of enemies. Now I am 42 years old and still going strong, many friends are gone from my life, I am no longer the kid who only cared about playing and getting through the day, I feel like I have lived hundreds of years, I have become very wise, every day is a jewel that I cherish and allows me to know more of God's creation.
A moment of silence for Heather Macleod. Connor's first and only real true love. To have no choice but to remain young while she slowly withers away and dies...there's nothing more heartbreaking, but that is the curse of immortality. And so the Highlander leaves his homeland behind and wanders the planet until his final battle with the Kurgan in New York. Godspeed Connor, Heather will always be with you in spirit. True love...that really IS immortal.
Some scenes are just timeless and priceless. This gem is one of those rare few. This isn't good TV. This is masterful art, in that it provokes the mind, the morality, the dreams and the emotions.
This iconic 80s movie reminds me so much of being young, beautiful scenery, fantastic choreography and directing; complimented by real actors with hauntingly fantastic music by the worlds biggest and best band of that time. Back when we played till it was dark and never knew what getting old meant, back when Marty McFly drove Doc Browns De Lorean, Johnny Castle was taking baby out the corner and Pete Mitchell roamed the sky! I wish I had that De Lorean right now!!!
It's horrific and I've dated women and sadly it happens to them in real life However, I became very successful and so you can leave them for another one because they only care about money. Each year on their birthday I light a candle for the women that got too old or fat to be with anymore.
I couldn't agree more.... And what makes this scene all the more tragic and tear jerking is that it was sung by arguably one of the 20th century's most passionate performers, who put his very heart and soul into everything he sang and yet was sadly taken from us at such a young age. Needless to say, our dear Freddie will always live forever in the hearts and souls of those of us who really appreciated his vast contributions to the world of real music.
Very emotive and a spot on description - you'd have to be damn cold to not be intensely affected as generation after generation of friends and lovers die. It'd drive anyone with a heart insane.
Very touching scenes. I sobbed like a child when I first saw this, near its release, back in the 1980's. Saw it again recently and it moved me even more. And my God, Beatie Edney is beautiful in this film!
34 Years later....and it's still as emotional as ever. Glad to say that I've visited the MacLeod homestead location in Glencoe purely for the love of the movie
It's still one of the most piercing, heartfelt outcries in cinema when Freddie's voice sings out "When love must die!" just as we see Heather's aged face in close up.
try watching the Movie "Green Card" ..same kind of sadness yet an innuendo that things going to be just great in a short while. Hope i didn't spoil the tears effect too much
My God yes! There will never be another Freddie! He was amazing! He was my hero as a child and he always will be! And what makes it even more sad is that when 'Who wants to live forever' was sung by Freddie, by that point in time, he was at least beginning to suspect that he was seriously ill, and thoughts of his own mortality and what his own fate would ultimately be were definitely on his mind by that point. But it was something that of course he keep very private until the end. To think that he sang such powerful, poignant lyrics so beautifully, whilst the whole time, carrying the personal burden of knowing that his own time on earth would probably be very limited..... ooofff,.... it just gets me like a knife in the heart!!
The sad truth is, you probably will anyhow. My grandmother is 96 years old. She's seen most of her friends and family go. What solace is there in dying anyhow, when you've already suffered those losses?
yes your right me too i also want to live forever but out missing everyone my family loved ones and friends that would not be fun being alone is not good...
This has been my favourite song for 2 decades, and yet I never knew this version existed with Freddie singing the first verse instead of Brian. It's utterly majestic.
Yes! I agree. I just discovered this version last week when I watched the movie for the first time. I want this version on my playlist, but it may have just been recorded for this scene in the movie.
I was born the year this came out. I remember watching this when I was younger, and thinking life would be an epic adventure with perilous battles and epic love. Life is so disappointing.
memories of Germany, circa 1986, my Army buddies and I would watch this movie every night we came back from the club.........we had, and still have much of the script memorized. Wonderful movie.
I am NOT crying. That's preposterous, my eyes are just sweating. And, I know I'll probably catch flack for this, but I truly believe this is why Connor had to die in Endgame. If only to be with Heather again.
My favorite scene of this film. Who wants to live forever... Heather's hair turned white, but Connor didn't age at all, still young. Heather is dying asking Connor to light candles on her birthdays. Yes, they will live together forever...
This scene is as strong now, as when I first saw it. Such pain, sadness and love at the same time. Think what you will of the movie, but this scene belongs in the annals of history.
"We're in the Highlands. Where else? Running down the mountainside. The sun's shining. It's not cold. You've got your sheep skins on and the boots I made for you. Goodnight my bonny Heather!".
So many movies about immortality, but none have portrayed the pain of eternal living, and of losing those close to you as well as Highlander has. The exquisite pain of this scene is still poignant as ever.
Bryan May did a heck of a job writing this song.gets me in the heart everytime I see this video or hear the song.RIP Freddy Merury.your voice lives on forever

Can still bring me to tears, even before I lost people closest to me. Amazing how this fantasy action movie found the heart and the guts to have this utterly lovely moment in it.

a powerful and emotional scene to this was at the core of what highlander is about showing inmortals and their lives the pain they suffer when they loose someone they love its so sad i dont think conner ever loved another women the way he loved heather
No love scene has ever touched me like this. The entire film is a masterpiece but this scene is truly special. It reflects on the passage of time, two people in love, enjoying life together and the pain of knowing that one day those experiences will come to an end. The entire scene moves me, but when they are happy together in her youth and she gradually ages and they remain as happy as ever is so touching. Also, the fact that (when she is an old woman) you can see in her face that she knows her end is coming and she is just trying to stay positive just breaks my heart. Her death of course sends a tear falling every time. The music by Queen throughout this film is perfect and their song for this scene is so powerful.
Did you know he was legally blind!!! Impressive!!! I love his laugh!!! He laughs the same in mortal combat!!! He's also Tarzan and the criminal mind in that tv series!!!
This is such a underrated and forgotten movie I remember when I was 4 and my mum first told me nobody lives forever I was so scared but as I have aged I cannot fear death but embrace it this movie gave me that
I agree with Mr. Colburn as I was also in Germany from 89 to 91. I remember all those times I watched this movie with my Army brothers. We watched it again and again, wearing out that tape. Even to this day, I still watch this scene and it makes my heart feel the sorrow and loss, as Ramirez said, "You must leave her brother..."
If I had written the script, The Prize for Connor would have been a second life with Heather, this time as a mortal man. He'd have awoken as if from a dream, his head on her lap, both of them young again, and she heavily pregnant. Would probably have destroyed the poignancy of the film, but I'm such a big softy: I like happy endings!
that is beautiful but the only thing I would cut out is the dream concept as its cliche thing about making the whole story a dream. However that is a beauftful prize, Heather, where they lived and the ability to have children. It really brings full circle how precious life and the relationships we create. It really highlights how humans are never meant to be immortal.
We're in the Highlands, where else? Running down a mountainside. The sun is shining. It's not cold. You've got your sheepskins on, and the boots I made for you. Good night, my bonny Heather...............
Such a sad and tragic moment that makes a sci fi action film legendary and elevates it among the rest, It really makes you pond the question "who want to live forever when everybody you love grows old and is left behind".
As a child I couldn’t get into the feeling as much as I can now! And it’s so powerful, sad, beautiful and heart-breaking, all at the same time! It’s everything a man wants and everything he fears....
Beautiful Heather RIP princess. I have always loved this film and this clip the most. No matter what real love never dies and it don't matter how many years go by. If it's real love it lasts till the end of time

that is beautiful but the only thing I would cut out is the dream concept as its cliche thing about making the whole story a dream.
Cant watch that scene without losing my masculinity. 😞
Perfectly directed.
Such a powerful and hearrbreaking scene
I cry like a sissy.... This movie man. What a music
One of the best scenes ever from one of the best movies ever. Must have seen it 40 times.
It’s everything a man wants and everything he fears....
this still brings a tear and the music is perfect!
Beautiful Heather RIP princess. I have always loved this film and this clip the most. No matter what real love never dies and it don't matter how many years go by. If it's real love it lasts till the end of time
So tragic I cry Everytime I see this. Thanks for the upload
Me too!
This is the most fucking beautiful scene, ever.
OK 2017 and just cried my eyes out for the many times in 30yrs of watching this!!!!!
Brilliant film & great music
i am 46, i have always loved the highlander story but im glad we dont' live forever, my heart i don't think could bare the pain.
The entire scene is powerful. The buildup of the music, the interplay of laughter and joy with knowing the inevitable. It’s a joyful sadness.
Top scene and music join, is very Sad, but beautfull Forever. "Who wants to live forever" by Brian May and sing for great Freddie Mercury. QUEEN
WOW, Those vocals and this scene, perfect!
Goodnight my bonny Heather. See you in 450 years give or take.
Best love scene ever put on film.
