No dialogue was needed for this epic finale; 7 and 1/2 minutes of perfection. Fun facts: 1. Cinematographer Dante Spinotti could not get the angle of view that he wanted for the sweeping shot beginning @ 1:47, so he had a wooden platform built out from the rock to place the camera on. No one would venture out on the platform, so he went out on it, jumping up and down to show its' sturdy build, and shot the scene himself. 2. There was, for a time, a Bar-B-Que restaurant named "Duncan's Bar-B-Que ( LOL) in the town of Chimney Rock at the base of the mountain. 3. In October 1997, my wife and I climbed the North Trail just as Magua, Cora, the Huron, Hawkeye and Chingachgook took (now closed off). We ate a picnic lunch on the boulder just to the left of Magua's head @ 7:32. To say that we were obsessed with this movie would be an understatement (we still are to this day).
Chimney Rock may be where the movie was shot, but the book and the towns in the movie are where the non-fictional part of the movie takes place. The area I grew up in, in the Adirondacks of NY, specifically from the Albany NY area to Lake George along the Hudson River, I lived on a dirt road that dead eneded at the Hudson River, played in the same woods all of this would have taken place along the river. Fort Ticondaroga looking over Lake Champlain and Fort William Henry still overlooks Lake George, both are still there and open to the public. The bridge in the town I grew up over a set of falls is named the Fenimore bridge after James Fenimore Cooper, their are businesses all around the area named after the author, even a little cave under the waterfalls that is called "Cooper's Cave". Actors climbed the North Trail in Chimney Rock but the characters in the book or movie were in upstate ny the entire time.
When I saw "Last of the Mohicans" in the theater, at the end, when the credits showed that it was filmed in North Carolina, the audience applauded and stood. It was a moment this proud North Carolinian will remember for a long time. The beauty of our state as shown in this film deserved a standing ovation.
The incomparable Wes Studi. The incomparable Daniel Day-Lewis. Two absolute powerhouse actors who nailed this film. Nothing like it before, and nothing like it since. Add in the deeply intense music and this film has it all.
This blockbuster movie with superb direction & compelling storytelling of every kind of human emotion should have won an Oscar hands down. This is a movie worthy to be watched over & over again...a masterpiece that will outlive all others....a classic that will live through the ages.
Although there is always a question of personal taste, the reality is that as a whole this film is not that good, its best part is this ending which is fantastic, the rest is Ok. Something similar to the movie 'Up!' from Pixar that has one of the best and most moving beginnings, but the rest of the film is just Ok.
@onlinecitizen3266 I know. And as good as "Unforgiven" is it still doesn't hold a candle to "The Last Of The Mohicans". It is Michael Mann's definitive masterpiece. It is an absolutely timeless work of art.
The way these dude's trail run through the entire movie has actually inspired me like nothing else in my life. I trail run in the mountains and now have a business helping runner's with joint issues.
The next day after having seen the film the night before, I walked into a sports shop in Rockland, Maine where I lived and bought a pair of Reebok "Boston Run" Sneakers. I never ran as a "runner", I identified myself as a mountain climber. The next morning I took them out of the box, put them on and ran out the door. I literally was running for my life. Two years almost to the day, I ran my first Marathon, Sugarloaf in Carrabasett Valley, Maine. I'd never even ran 26.2 miles before, it was like my feet never even touched the ground. I just visualized Daniel Day Lewis running through the forest in the opening scene and this song the entire 3 hours when I broke the finish tape as the first woman to cross the line. After runnning 8 Boston Marathon's, my final run there was when placing 7th in the Masters Division and receiving a Trophy from the BAA for my efforts. This all came to be because of watching this film.
i had a friend in college, when she would come back to the dorm drunk, she would come find me and ask, "wanna watch the end of last of the mohicans?" she did this so often that everyone in the dorm thought we were having sex, but it was really about watching one of the most epic endings to a movie.
Great title for this video. This is my absolute favorite movie of all time. Duncan sacrificing him self so the love of his life would live is heart wrenching. Duncan embodied the honor he always strived for and desired right in that moment. Such a G.
Yes, a surprising moment, the first time I saw it. As much as the audience was meant to not like Duncan, he stayed true to his values at the end even in the face of a horrific death. Also, very realistic that the tribe would be more honored to burn him, an enemy warrior, than burning her. And this was only the beginning of the surprises at the end...
This should have won the Oscar even though Silence of the Lambs was a great movie, this score, the actors, the story was just amazing and undoubtedly one of the best ever made movies. 🎥 🍿 ❤💯💯 I listen to this soundtrack while mountain biking. ❤
One of the best movies ever made. And it's not only fiction there is a real story behind it. I miss the part of the ending were he said I'm the last of the Mohicans.
As a boy from a third world, I first watched this movie around 1999. My hometown never had TVs at that time, the whole town had about 3-5 tvs. This movie reminds me of my late dad, it just brings back so much memories of my childhood! ❤😢
a legendary movie..and the music is legendary... and when there is only majestic nature in the frame, the music also admires this greatness... and in this place, the music is especially beautiful, as if to say - in such a divine place, how can you kill, and not forgive everyone and everything
The fact that Day-Lewis learned how to load and shoot a seven years war musket while running is amazing to me. It's not drawing things with his foot but its unreal
Wow; I did not know that!!! I've loved Dougie forever. I had the pleasure over the years to see him twice perform at small venues in the US. Besides Dr Zhivago, The Last Of The Mohicans is my favorite film, each of which I've watched over a dozen times.
One of my very favourite movies ever. From Daniel Day Lewis leaping through the forest to the end scene, it is exceptional. I still hold my breath despite seeing it numerous times. Should go down in the annals as one of the best movies ever made - cast, music, cinematography, everything.
I was in that movie,I worked as an extra, background and such, the film and the music always brings back special memories,I met a lot of wonderful people, most of my work was at the fort which was located at Lake James,.
I got such a crush on her especially after seeing the cop action comedy "Stakeout" 1987 - - - more than once! :) She reminds me of Canadian actor Jennifer Dale.
@@ffrick73 It was loaded. It was the rifle he snagged off of the two dead warriors he shot right before. You'll hear the sound of him dropping both weapons and then snatching up the two more from the Huron he dropped at the same time. Finally after his dad came charging out of the shrubbery, Hawkeye drops another Huron taking aim at him, and then holding up the one loaded rifle he had left.
he fires the musket he picked up off one of the two Indians he shot with his rifle and another musket then throws that aside and holds them at Bay with his rifle that he did not reload after firing
The pinnacle of revenge scenes… depicted in an almost silent movie feel, with all sorts of emotions which are emphatically emphasised in the mesmeric music by Trevor Jones. Wonderful.
Beware the old man in a profession where men usually die young! I just love how well this scene demonstrates this! Muaga is older than Uuncas and owns him but chinchgatchuk is older and wiser than all of the Huron warriors and just completely owns them all!
The death scene with Alice has stayed with me since I was a teenager, from the very first time I saw this movie in high school, when my history teacher wheeled in the CRT TV and VHS player on the cart for us to watch this movie in class. That actress says so much in her expression with out saying a word, coupled with the muted rhythmic beat, I still get goosebumps watching that part, every time.
Every time I watch this ending, I get goosebumps from the amount of emotions that happen one after another: fury, rage, loyalty, love, pain, dedication, courage, bravery, determination, compassion and sacrifice. All in a wild and hostile natural environment. Great movie without a doubt.
I first saw this when I was 17.When Magua, played by Wes Studi killed Uncas- Eric Schweig I literally stood up and yelled at the TV.I spent the next 25 years hating Studi.Today I believe he deserved an Oscar.
I love the way the final battle magua doesn't even lay a finger on him. Just feels the full force of his rage and is destroyed instantly. The soundtrack isn't bad either.
You know, this final scene. I saw this movie as a kid, and apparently forgot about it, because throughout my entire life I had an image in my head (I didnt know where it came from) of a redhead, staring "at me" from a cliff, and she turns around and jumps off. I remembered THAT. My entire life. I also had vague flashes of "a guy being crucified and set on fire." This was before reddit. Also people would ask, when I explained the "scene," what was said, and I had nothing. I grew up remembering this scene, but not the movie and had no idea what I was remembering. Saw it as an older adult (probably about 30) and this ending came on and I was like ":o thats it! Thats what I've been remembering!" I think thats a testament to how great and powerful this scene was, that an 8 year old saw it and remembered it, but not the movie around it. I also came across the song "the gael" around age 27, and for some reason, I could only think of people running to it.
This movie has it all: Betrayal, Loyalty, Sacrifice, Revenge, Love, Courage, History, Culture and great theme.
The idea of not fearing death, is a fear, for those who, know they sent her there, they have only eternity to think of their's!

I never did understand why the soundtrack to this movie was not nominated for an Oscar.
I agree makes me weep and gives me goose bumps along with the cinema photography

It's probably one of the best movies ever made. Why it didn't win all the awards that year is a mystery to me.
You are right. Film extraordinaire ! ❤
Apparently Unforgiven won best picture that year (1992). I haven't seen it. LotM won Best Sound as it's only award.
