As good as Senri solo's are, what you are missing is how she "drives" a band and interacts with other band instruments. It's what I think truly sets her apart and why she is in such high demand among rock and jazz acts in Japan, as well as Jazz internationally. Musicians want to perform with her. Check out a video from Rie aka Suzaku called "Breaking the Limits" or a performance with her group "The Jazz Avengers" called "Hunter".

I agree completely !!!!! I'm a big fan of The Jazz Avengers. I don't there is a better ensemble band in jazz/funk today. I first heard about Senri when I was following the life and career of Yoyoka Samo, who is going to school in the US at present. I also was a big fan of Juna Serita from the Tokyo jazz scene. There are so many great female jazz artists in Japan. So many great sax and woodwind players, Uko Saxy and The Sax Triplets to name two. Shamisen player Shinobu Kawashima is another up and coming jazz artist.

I was wondering if you'd get around to Senri. I began playing drums and lessons in 1964, and played for 15 years. I've kept up with the music scene ever since, although I leaned more toward Jazz and Blues in the late 70's. I've followed Senri for over six years. Senri is the best drummer I've heard over all of these years, no matter the genre of music. She could do at age 16 what Neal Peart did at his best.

As others mentioned, Senri's work with Jazz Avengers is top notch. I have seen her playing since she was Yoyoka's age while her technical abilities were always impressive, her performances always felt stiff and kind of left me cold. Since she has been playing with Juna Serita though it has all pulled together for some fantastic performances.

If you want to introduce a drummer to Senri I would suggest her version of "Stratus", performed at Rocking The Castle Jazz Fest in France when she was 18. "Stratus" was written by respected jazz drummer Billy Cobham and was one of Prince's favorites to play live. Most drummers are aware of it, and Senri killed it. The video of the performance can be found on Senri's official YT page as well as Drummerworld's official YT page. Then there's also the 'drum battle' between Senri and Tamu Murata to Senri's original "Real Life" that's so worth showing. I'm just saying, there's a lot of a great Senri performance videos outside these Drumeo type solos.

I believe she was 17 when this was recorded. Her drums sound SOOOOOO damn good. By the way, those drum sticks she uses are special made for her.... about three inches longer than normal, so she gets more power from her small frame. The out-go tune you played was Senri, and you should watch and/or react to that also.

They all call Senri the "leader", you can hear it on some of their short behind the scene videos on their channel. The Jazz Avengers originally started out as a one-time thing called Senri's Seven. Senri chose all of them as members for a one-time gig for an advertisement (I believe), but it clicked so well that they decided to rename themselves and go on. Miku Yonezawa is amazing though, her solo albums are my favourites of all the albums I have checked out by the Jazz Avengers members next to Senri's projects (which I already knew). And I bought albums by all members except for their keyboard player Marie Takeda (I couldn't find any). I listen to Miku Yonezawa's album Exotic Gravity quite regularly, it is amazing.

There is a great video from about 11 years ago (Senri must have been 15 or so) with Senri and a bunch of young jazz musicians. I am pretty sure it's from a DVD by sax player Yucco Miller (who probably went by her Japanese name back then). 『Lover Come Back To Me』 大西由希子×川口千里(Senri Kawaguchi)×岩永真奈×長崎祥子 (it will probably not be the best fit for people who don't enjoy heavy sax playing)
It's one of my favourite videos of Senri (and the sax player Yucco Miller) because you can see how good they already are at such a young age and it shows Senri's ability to read the soloists and react to what they play. I go back to that video regularly. I would say Yucco Miller probably steals the show overall, but all 4 of them get to shine, the keyboard player is really good as well. The bass solo is probably my least favourite part, but the bassist does a great job during the rest of the track and the solo is certainly not bad either.

Senri Kawaguchi is the best female drummer in the world. Even when she is compared to male drummers, very few are on her talent level.
She is in the top 500 list of drummers in the world of which there are only 13 female drummers on the list.
When Senri was in high school, she was into rock and metal, but eventuall migrated to fusion and jazz. Here is on older video of her playing Frankenstein.

Flux Capicator is Senri's signature song,

Senri is an excellent musician up on stage. Here she performs with her latest band, The Jazz Avengers.
    ruclips.net/video/lHQEHMcxCJE/видео.html
What keeps Senri below the radar is that she rarely plays anything outside of her current scope of interest which has a narrow bandwidth when it comes to followers.

A couple of Senri's projects (next to her solo albums):
    - Kiyo*Sen (jazz fusion together with Kiyomi Otaka on keys, check yesterdays video, they are a project for about 10 years now)
    - The Jazz Avengers (8 amazing musicians, 4 of them sax players)
    - 坐音 ZAON (jazz fusion mixed with traditional instruments)
    - Uragaeru (not sure if that's going to be an ongoing thing. Jazz fusion, probably the least accesible of all of these, as a tribute to the band Fragile, the band of her late teacher and mentor Kozo Suganuma)
I highly recommend checking those out for people who are interested, although all of them are jazz fusion or jazz in general.
She also collaborates with a lot of other musicians and projects (like jazz musicians seem to do) including being being part of the "Blue Note Tokyo All-Star Jazz Orchestra" a year or so ago. But that is a pretty big jazz orchestra and the videos are pretty long (not the best reaction material).
She has also played on an album of Rie a.k.a. Suzaku (a mainly rock/metal guitarist) and has performed with her live as well. Although Rie has a jazz fusion band (called Muses) nowadays as well with an other great Japanese drummer Kanade Sato.

I can’t see into the future, but I think it’s pretty safe to say that there is zero percent chance of Senri touring with Rush. I could give at least a dozen reasons why that is. Maybe IF they tour Japan she would make a guest appearance, like she did with The Aristocrats. (Guthrie Govan) Anyway, she’s already in about six excellent bands - I hope you're enjoying what SHE wants to do - right now in the present.

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT 10 месяцев назад +6

I can guarantee you that even Yoyoka doesn't agree with you on that one. She is an extremely talented drummer and certainly worth checking out, but Senri has been playing drums much longer at the same high level, she is also playing more demanding genres (although Yoyoka's progressive track she recently released is extremely impressive). Yoyoka is great though, especially for her age. Senri was as well at that age, so I'm sure Yoyoka will keep progressing and becoming better as well. So no shade to Yoyoka, it's remarkable how good she. And Yoyoka has beaten the record of being the youngest drummer to be featured in drummerworld's top 500 drummer list by a couple of years. Senri was 13 and Yoyoka 11 when they were included if I'm not mistaken. I also really like Kanade Sato as well, who was also very young when she started (3 I believe) and is an amazing drummer in her own right (she's now 20 or 21).
