She drums for a lot of projects, a lot as a hired gun too, but some of her own projects are certainly worth checking out. The Jazz Avengers is certainly one of them, but there are also - Her solo stuff: Jazz/Jazz Fusion, first live DVD was when she was 11 - Kiyo*Sen: Jazz Fusion with keyboard player Kiyomi Otaka who plays in Casiopea, first release when Senri was 17 - 坐音 ZAON: Jazz Fusion with traditional Japanese instruments mixed in They formed Zaon just before releasing The Jazz Avengers (which was supposed to be a one-tine thing that turned into a group, like it did for Nemophila), but I really think it would be a shame if Senri and Ami Nakazono (soprano sax of The Jazz Avengers) stopped playing in that project because I really like it a lot and it's pretty unique. And like CyberMantis says, all the Jazz Avengers' solo work is worth checking out. My favourites next to Senri are Miku Yonezawa's solo work and Juna Serita's solo work and projects, but I have checked all of them out (with the exception of keyboard player Marie Takeda, I can't find a lot) and all of them are really good. And talking about rock drummer, she also player with Rie a.k.a. Suzaku in the past, who is a rock/metal guitarist and has player for some other rock projects a couple of times as guest. I would say Kanade Sato (an other fantastic Japanese prodigy Jazz Fusion drummer) is probably a little more of a rock drummer nowadays having worked with Rie a lot more, but Senri certainly can do it all.
At the age of 13, Senri entered the Drummerworld list of the top 500. This music is not necessarily my style. but senri is so exceptionally good that she even tops my rankings and we're talking about my favorites Tamu Murata, Haruna, Fumiya, Yoyoka Soma, Junna, Marco Minnemann, Thomas Lang..... Senri is currently one of the best jazz/ Fusion drummer, technically she can play any style, it's great that you notice her because of the jazz/fusion style, Senri can also be overlooked, once you see and hear her you won't forget her. great reactions as always
I was so stoked when you teased Senri in the previous video. My vote, best drummer in the world. And an example of a prodigy who proved to be a genius (so often they don’t follow thru). Japanese jazz equivalent of playing the Grammys after winning, as a teenager, with your 4 continent band (Asian African European trio that met in Cali). Basically, just read her Wiki 😎 Was mildly disappointed that you didn’t catch that she broke a stick during this video!, she laughed and waved half a stick after it’d shot out at the camera, but it didn’t significantly impact her playing, grabbed another stick (common occurrence I’m sure) and they left it in … I like my rockers (Gacharic Spin / Doll$Boxx, Lovebites, BandMaid, Nemophila, Yoyoka, Li-sa-X, a dozen more JFeMetal bands), wish Senri played more hard rock / pop, but she’s her own thing, plus jams with the likes of The Aristocrats, and is spoken in same breath as all time great fusion drummers. Long live the “Princess of Many Strokes” 🤘🥁💃 PS I see others mentioned, there is footage from a TVfeature, of her working with other drummers; Murata Tamu (Nemophila) is in a few, and featured in one (a long one, without subtitles, but they duel, as well as play each other’s very different kits). And she often plays with metal fusion artist “Rie a.k.a. Suzaku”, but it’s not always Senri, they unfortunately go by many different names, like Jazz Avengers, Muses, kind of a rotating combo of women playing hard rocking fusion in various forms (horn funk, Jeff Beck tributes, SteveVai-like originals), hopefully “we” will eventually track down some links for you… 😉
Here’s a link for you & John. Hard to explain. The keyboardist’s prog metal instrumental “Breaking The Limit”, on her duo’s channel “Ikejirike” (her last name I think, usually with bassist husband), with guest guitarist (also metal-jazz instrumentalist) Rie a.k.a. Suzaku, with my fav bassist to submit for the Lovebites gig last year Rina Hoshino, with Senri Kawaguchi properly rocking the hardest of them all ruclips.net/video/plCj80rGh0E/видео.htmlsi=uqFAQF70YRAYq3C_
I've been following Senri for almost 8 years. I began playing drums/lessons in 1964, and IMHO, from Rock to Blues to Jazz she's the best I've ever heard.
Senri is not only technically excellent, but with a jazz band she is musical, never missing an accent. Never overpowering the other musicians until it is her time to shine, then she absolutely explodes She has an all girl big jazz band in Japan, The Jazz Avengers. She said they aren’t planning tours to North America unless something has changed since i saw that interview
Senri is currently on vacation here in Germany and Austria with her mother. She munches "Weisswurscht" in Munich and "Schnitzel" in Vienna. I hope that she will perform live here in Germany soon. With her band The Jazz Avengers or her crew from KIYO*SEN. Both are world class.🥁🥁
Hi from France: Senri entered the Drummaworld Top 500 ranking at the age of 11 and is the first Japanese female drummer to enter this ranking (today, Yoyoka is also part of it), the first Japanese drummer to enter was the awesome Akira Jimbo. Since the age of 17, Senri has recorded several solo CDs and DVDs (A la Mode, 2013; Buena vista, 2014; Dynamogenic, 2020 and Senri in the studio, 2020) and in groups, mainly with his accomplice keyboardist Kiyomi Otaka : Kiyo*Sen (Chocolate booster, 2014; Duology, 2015; Trick or Treat, 2017; Organizer, 2019; Drummatica, 2020; and an EP Exatune, 2022). In 2017, she formed the trio Senri Kawaguchi Triangle with two French jazzmen and two records, a studio: CIDER, Hard & Sweet (2017) and the excellent DVD Live in Yokohama, same year... Since then, she has formed with 7 other jazz women the group The Jazz Avengers which has just released an eponymous CD. Furthermore, she is also a session drummer for many musicians and jazz and jazz-fusion groups, such as the guitarist Koichi Yabori or the virtuoso bassist Tetsuo Sakurai... She is now 26 years old and is very active (there are numerous performances by Senri on RUclips at all times), which has not prevented her in recent years from continuing her studies and obtaining a Master's degree in Urban Sociology... Genius when you have us! To start her discovery, I recommend the concert that she did in her studio during the covid pandemic entitled: "The Quarantuned Music Festival" where she plays several of her music on soundtracks without a drum line and it is quite impressive: ruclips.net/video/jO8VlSqw7do/видео.html&ab_channel=SenriKawaguchi [Senri est entrée à l'âge de 11 ans dans le classement Drummaworld Top 500 et est la première femme batteuse japonaise à être entrée dans ce classement (aujourd'hui, Yoyoka en fait aussi partie), le premier batteur japonais a y être entré fut le génial Akira Jimbo. Thanks for the great reaction sir! Senri is hands down one of the best drummers in the world. She made DrummerWorld's Top 500 Drummers OF ALL TIME at age 13, youngest ever. However, YOYOKA bumped her from that honorable spot when she was just 11, the new youngest ever. This is going to be hard to beat, EVER! Anyway, you might enjoy this improvised solo of YOYOKA. Believe it or not, she is approaching Senri's level, now at 14.5 y.o. These two girls are friends, but it's not a competition. As you know the Japanese female talent pool goes to the center of the earth! YOYOKA has been on the ELLEN SHOW twice, and played live on stage in front of 30,000, with Cyndi Lauper and Fallout Boy when their tours hit Tokyo. Her resume is longer than this video. Check this out. If you want a detailed breakdown of the complexity of what she is doing, check out Wave Potter's reaction (1st link), or if you want to watch the original that is the 2nd link. This is a few months before YOYOKA turned 14. Been enjoying Senri's videos for years. So musically technical and plays with deep sense of joy. 50% inspiring...50% intimidating 😉 A number of really impressive young female drummers coming out of Japan right now.
Senri's cover of Billy Cobham's "Stratus" at Rock At The Castle in France when she was like 16 is crazy. There's a copy on her personal channel as well as DrummerWorld's. Her original compositions "Onyx" and "Real Life" are also great; she actually did a drum duel of "Real Life" with Tamu Murata back when Tamu was hosting this drum based program on YT (Tamu would bring on drummers and try to learn their songs) and the clipped drum off is still available. Senri is also defacto leader of the Jazz Avengers, a horn based group of young Japanese ladies who play mostly Jazz and includes Juna Serita, another Japanese prodigy who plays Jazz and Funk bass. Juna has an original called "Hunter" that's for a filthy bass line so if you ever get someone more into the Jazz or drum side of things those are great songs to choose. Fun Fact: Juna also used to play with Tamu way back in the band Soramimi, and they band won the 'Cute Girl' opening act at Naon Yaon Festival. After that, Tamu became a support drummer for Naon and thats how she got to know Saki; Tamu supported Saki's World Guitar Girls Collection at Naon.
Thank you for checking out Senri. Yes, incredible. My suggestion if you really want to see fireworks is her performance of "Wupatki". Senri with her trio, who are also great musicians.
Senri is special. There are lots of good videos of her out their on YuoTube, of her drumming from a young age right up to the present. Japan aginn is producing top noth musicians in various genres and instruments, and for drummers Senri is tip noth just just for a lady and notjust for Japan but for the world. She has played with alarge variety of musiciians and genres some of which has been highlighted by others below. She is currently the drummer with The Jazz Avengers a group of very talented ladies, including Juna Serita on bass. The band also has 4 saxophonists and keyboards.
I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but she asked Zildjian to make her longer than normal sticks because she said: "My arms are too short." Great personality, outstanding skills on the kit and a killer smile make her a great ambassador for the kraft. You know she isn't full of herself by the way she acted when she broke her stick. Japan is full of outstanding female drummers. Must be something in the water.
Senri is a once in a lifetime phenomenon! I came across her purely by accident touring France. She was at the "rock the Château" festival roughly 8 years ago ( on youtube) and even then she was breathtaking. As a jazz drummer she now plays with Marie Takeda and Miku Yonezawa in a group called " The Jazz Avengers" , a very talented set of musicians!
Saw Senri at a small Jazz club in Meguro City Tokyo this past Jan., 2023, a couple of days before seeing Band Maid at TGT. She not only is precise, but she hits hard, even harder than Akane, Po! She is truly amazing to see live. She appears to be on vacation right now, touring Europe. 🦍🍌
I am a big fan of Senri, she got me interested in the Japanese music scene and overall fusion jazz. Got to check out her solo stuff and when she paired up to do KIYO*SEN and now with the Jazz Avengers. She is a class act for sure.
Here's the young lady that beat ALL the other young Japanese female drummers in the annual "Hit Like A Girl" international drum competition. Kii = (Junna / Yoyoka hybrid) Truly insane drum talent: 【Hit Like A Girl: International Drum Contest】2021/2022 back-to-back champion (
My favorite video of her's is a contest submission when she was like 15 or 16. She starts out like she's reading a book then busts into the song and just rips.
Joel, if you liked this you should check out yet another great young Japanese drummer named Yoyoka Soma. She's living in the US now while going to school. The earliest video of her keeping time on a drum kit is at age 3. She pretty much followed same steps as Senri Kawaguchi in working her way up the ladder. She's now 13 or 14 and has some great chops. She had her own YT channel at age 5 and recorded tutorials for young drummers. There are tons of her covers, which are more rock oriented than Senri's Jazz work. For her 12th birthday she had a recording session with some of Japan's best session musicians and singers. Look up Yoyoka's 12th Birthday Sessions, she's quite good. She's also done some collaborating with young Japanese guitarist Li-Sa-X, who is another wunderkind talent. You won't be disappointed.
That is throwing in a ringer. haha Senri in one of the best female drummers that ever walked on this planet. She is virtually unknown outside of Japan and a few jazz fans.
She was born in January 1997, so 26 (she recorded her first DVD at 11 though). To call someone the best is really difficult for me, there are a lot of amazing drummers out there, but she's at least one of my favourite drummers.
Senri, in a simple word, is the Greatest Female Drummer today, in my humble opinion; I do play drums too, but far, realy far behind this such a killer and awesome technique. To much to learn, yet, that`s for sure!!!.. So look at the power strokes lead by her right arm, effortless and natural flowing. Ther`s nothing left to say, just practice, practice and practice.
As much as I love Senri, and Yoyoka is coming into her own, but Kanade has them all beat, she is on another level completely. By the way, they all won “Hit Like a Girl” when they are about the same age!
Kai is special. He is like a steam engine, totally unstoppable. He is also big and have a great presence. You see him. But, in particular he can hold a beat better than anyone. I can imagine it is noisy when he plays.
I don't need him or anybody else to know what to think about this genius. I know her, but i've never heard about him .... Who is Elton John ? Did i say it all or you want more ?
You can check out her channel for things in a band context, although she is mainly a jazz and jazz fusion drummer. It's not like she is constantly going off like this. - Her solo music: usually done with a band, although there are solo playthroughs on her channel - Kiyo*Sen: with keyboard Veteran Kiyomi Otaka, their music videos are generally with the 2 of them, but their live sets are typically with an extra 1 or 2 people - 坐音 ZAON: Jazz Fusion with traditional Japanese instruments mixed in, not a lot of videos on them but they are a 6-piece group with some extra guest musicians depending on the track - The Jazz Avengers: 8-piece group (4 sax players), my guess is that Senri's attention is mainly going to this project since it has been doing really well since it started. But she has also played in big jazz settings before like: - "BLUE NOTE TOKYO ALL-STAR JAZZ ORCHESTRA" / BLUE NOTE TOKYO: with a big Jazz ensemble - video: Miku Yonezawa, Senri Kawaguchi, Ami Nakazano LIVE!: With some of her Jazz Avengers bandmates (before The Jazz Avengers existed), not that many people, but you can still see how she works in that setting) She has also played with rock/metal guitarist Rie a.k.a. Suzaku in a more rock setting on one of Rie's solo albums and live. Blue Wind (Jeff Beck Cover) > Rie a.k.a. Suzaku (G)/川口千里 (Dr)/佐藤奏 (Dr)/星野李奈 (B)/池尻喜子 (Kb): together with an other amazing drummer Kanade Sato in this one.
It's like - when the stick breaks, she gets pissed off that her chops have been interrupted, so she just goes for it afterwards. It's a bit of a travesty that she is not better known among the musical aristocracy like John Mahon. Well, he knows her now!!
Great jazz drummer that can rock if she wants to. She drums for the Jazz Avengers.
The Jazz Avengers is a supergroup. All of them are amazing.
She drums for a lot of projects, a lot as a hired gun too, but some of her own projects are certainly worth checking out. The Jazz Avengers is certainly one of them, but there are also
- Her solo stuff: Jazz/Jazz Fusion, first live DVD was when she was 11
- Kiyo*Sen: Jazz Fusion with keyboard player Kiyomi Otaka who plays in Casiopea, first release when Senri was 17
- 坐音 ZAON: Jazz Fusion with traditional Japanese instruments mixed in
They formed Zaon just before releasing The Jazz Avengers (which was supposed to be a one-tine thing that turned into a group, like it did for Nemophila), but I really think it would be a shame if Senri and Ami Nakazono (soprano sax of The Jazz Avengers) stopped playing in that project because I really like it a lot and it's pretty unique.
And like CyberMantis says, all the Jazz Avengers' solo work is worth checking out. Japan's pool of drumming talent is incredibly deep. It really is absurd. I love how cool she was when she lost a stick. 😎
She didn't lose it , she broke it .
@@petefuentes9424 She lost it by braking it. 😀
She recently backed guitarist Saki in her first solo show, and showed she can handle complex rock and metal with ease. Fantastic player
John's cool. Open-minded and intently listening to whatever you show him. Good guest. You should show him some of the Haruna cams.

I mean....WHEN did she actually do this solo man? i am really feeling flummoxed here what an amazing out of this world talent!

She is the best!
Senri currently plays in a band called the Jazz Avengers. Worth checking out!
An absolute fantastic drummer, also she's in germany right now!
Her drums always sound fantastic. If I'm not mistaken, she was only 15 or 16 years old here.
I am a big fan of Senri, she got me interested in the Japanese music scene and overall fusion jazz. Got to check out her solo stuff and when she paired up to do KIYO*SEN and now with the Jazz Avengers. She is a class act for sure.
I really love her technical playing style and is my No.1 female drummer :)

A stick master, what a player, I have seen many of her videos
Here's the young lady that beat ALL the other young Japanese female drummers in the annual "Hit Like A Girl" international drum competition.
Kii = (Junna / Yoyoka hybrid) Truly insane drum talent:
【Hit Like A Girl: International Drum Contest】2021/2022 back-to-back champion (
John probably doesn't remember but he and I played snare together at St. Paul's in the school band.
My favorite video of her's is a contest submission when she was like 15 or 16. She starts out like she's reading a book then busts into the song and just rips.
UNDOUDTABLY SHE WOULD BE HONORED TO MAKE A MUSIC VIDEO WITH JOHN.
That is throwing in a ringer. haha
Senri in one of the best female drummers that ever walked on this planet.
She is virtually unknown outside of Japan and a few jazz fans.
Anytime you think you are good... a cute Japanese girl comes along and mops the floor with you! 😆
😂😂😂This saying is world class ! 🤣 But I think you are right.😉
Certainly in the conversation for best drummer...full stop. And at only 26 (maybe 27 by now)...
She looks like she's about 16 years old.
@@TheCyberMantis Yeah, she looks a lot younger than she is...and she's tiny.
I know of Senri; listen to her a lot, especially Stratus. Who is John Mahan !
As much as I love Senri, and Yoyoka is coming into her own, but Kanade has them all beat, she is on another level completely. By the way, they all won “Hit Like a Girl” when they are about the same age!
please try to show another japanese female drummer - Kanade Sato, she is also avesome... She is younger than Senri and also incredible talented girl

Pretty awesome AIN'T cuttin it man...ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDING Is more like it!
🥁❤
Senri is one of those players that is so good you are almost laughing out loud at how ridiculously great she is. Wow what an awkward sentence.
Kai Hahto from Finland
Kai is special. He is like a steam engine, totally unstoppable. He is also big and have a great presence. You see him. But, in particular he can hold a beat better than anyone. I can imagine it is noisy when he plays.
Good choice. She's in a group called The Jazz Avengers. But she doesn't show off or no one will want to play with her.

Maybe of interest for some of you: 20 "Japanese Great and Amazing Female Drummers" here on YT.
I don't need him or anybody else to know what to think about this genius.
I know her, but i've never heard about him ....
Who is Elton John ?
Did i say it all or you want more ?
Yes, please elaborate
who is Elton John ?@@joelroadie
VOB? I do not know much about VOB. The little I have heard did rock though.
Yoyoka played a cover of Senris Onyx live in a club at the age of seven, pretty good
Senri seems also to be an on call drummer for the Blue Note Tokyo All Star Jazz Orchestra

I'd like to see her in a band context. Can she do that for 2 hours? Impressive nonetheless.
You can check out her channel for things in a band context, although she is mainly a jazz and jazz fusion drummer. It's not like she is constantly going off like this.
- Her solo music: usually done with a band, although there are solo playthroughs on her channel
- Kiyo*Sen: with keyboard Veteran Kiyomi Otaka, their music videos are generally with the 2 of them, but their live sets are typically with an extra 1 or 2 people
- 坐音 ZAON: Jazz Fusion with traditional Japanese instruments mixed in, not a lot of videos on them but they are a 6-piece group with some extra guest musicians depending on the track
- The Jazz Avengers: 8-piece group (4 sax players), my guess is that Senri's attention is mainly going to this project since it has been doing really well since it started.
But she has also played in big jazz settings before like:
- "BLUE NOTE TOKYO ALL-STAR JAZZ ORCHESTRA" / BLUE NOTE TOKYO: with a big Jazz ensemble
- video: Miku Yonezawa, Senri Kawaguchi, Ami Nakazano LIVE!: With some of her Jazz Avengers bandmates (before The Jazz Avengers existed), not that many people, but you can still see how she works in that setting)
She has also played with rock/metal guitarist Rie a.k.a.
Broken stick 5:27.
It's like - when the stick breaks, she gets pissed off that her chops have been interrupted, so she just goes for it afterwards. It's a bit of a travesty that she is not better known among the musical aristocracy like John Mahon. Well, he knows her now!!
How can you be a professional drummer and not hear of Senri? Senri is better all of these guys.
Senri and Kenade are clones from each other kkk
