- I forgot to mention to shower with the window open a crack if you do not have a exhaust fan in your bathroom.
Cheap and effective method to prevent mold and rot in a bathroom window of a old house. Mold on window. Prevent mold and rot on your new vinyl replacement windows or your old existing windows.

YES!! My house was built in 1910 and looks JUST like this. Thanks so much for making this video!
Me too. Thank you for sharing this video.
LOL, that was not what I was expecting. Such a simple and effective solution. Nice one dude.
freaking genius lol... im so over this window
Except, that shower liner clings to you while you shower and makes for an annoying showering experience.
I hate windows inside the shower😡 who ever decided to invent them this way is a fool!
People didn't take showers back then, dude.
Claw foot tubs back in those old days.
Hey, what perfect timing. I was going to get rid of a window in my shower and I'm thinking how I'm going to do it. But after I saw your idea, it's a perfect idea. THANK YOU!
Single mom on a toight budget always, giving her 2 cents. I'm not handy, can't afford any fix, but I did exactly this! Amen brother! It does work too:)
I like the suggestion, how ever if there is already damage, I'd rip that out and go PVC trim
holy cow! why didn't think of that. loool.
was getting tired of the crap mildew rot pilling up on my window next to shower!
this saves you so much cleaning toooooooo.
You just helped me solve my bathroom install. Thanks!
This is blowing my mind. Thank you 😭
Why not just use a regular curtain rod at the top of the window and then cut a shower curtain to the size of the window and tack it at the bottom so you don't have to cover the whole shower wall. It's just like a regular curtain only it's a shower curtain that only covers only the window, it'll look much better, work just as well, and of course will only cost a few dollars. That's what I did with the window inside the shower of the older house that I bought, it works great, and looks better than a full second shower curtain that covers the whole inside shower wall. It's something similar to consider if this is your situation as well.
As an interior designer....thank you! That would look so much better :)
just have to make sure it covers enough because as he showed the trim on the sides was rotting as well and had to be replaced.
@@nathanielmorey2800 Well a shower curtain is presumably much larger than the window, so you can trim it to whatever size that's needed to protect the wood underneath. One would hope people would be smart enough to understand that aspect. If the window was already rotted due to lack of a solution, that's a different issue. But once it's fixed, the curtain idea works very well. I have zero issues and the window ledge stays bone dry. Also it's painted and protecting the non rotted wood underneath. Cheers.
Double shower curtains like this will stick to you while you shower. Great cheap fix, though.
This does not work. It still traps moisture on the other side of the shower curtain and the window still gets rot and mold. I thought I was brilliant to think of this but it didn't help at all. These shower windows are the worst.
Gotchya… so what’s solution?
Put a clear curtain on the shower too - the UV light going through it will kill the mold and bacteria from growing on the shower or slow it down by a lot
What do you do about condensation that happens behind the window curtain?
Mind = Blown. Thanks for the tip, really helped me out.
I repainted my windowsills, caulked the edges and sprayed it down with flex seal
Brilliant and simple! I love it. Best thing is that you can just push the curtain aside so you can still open the window in summer.
Omg dude !!! Framing genius
My Mothers old house we hung a plastic blind. Over time it would mold. Throw it out for a new one or soak it in bleach water and good.
Kustom Life that's what I do now 🎯
This is great!!!
Got me a shower window...we been here 4 years and I am seeing some problems. Only bathroom so this idea will be great to allow the area to dry out so I can fix it.
Thank you!!!
Excellent idea!!!
This just solved all my problems. Thank you.
Wow…was not expecting that 😂
Best idea ever! Thanks a ton!!
So I've had a shower curtain over the window for a year and a half and it's done nothing. Mold is still growing in the window just as fast as I can clean it off and I'm certain that it's rotted where I can't see it. Does anyone have a better solution??
We have the identical situation, using a window curtain but will have a full bathroom makeover, so will be sealing the window trim likely There are many good RUclips videos on the topic. Window-wise, I don’t think it will cost us $200 to waterproof. I may make some videos of the process, too. Dave
Any videos yet?
Maybe you created a sandwich of two barriers and the curtain is not letting enough air ventilation behind it. Move the curtain further away from the window. Also your problem may be from a different cause.
Take your window out and replace it with glass blocks… worth it and pretty inexpensive
Since this comment the whole wall of tile has since fallen down and I ended up having to replace the window anyway.
Marvelous idea. I'm in! You also sound like so much like Dax Shepard - a very favorite actor that I adore! : )
Love this video - for 2 reasons!
I literally thought someone posted a video of my bathroom. Same tile, same window… My question though is, how to take off the rot and fix it.
Omg great idea man 🙆🏾y didn't I think of this b4 smh great job👍👍👍👍
Omg.... Thanks so much!!!!
Awesome remedy! Thank You!
My hero!
love this thank you for sharing your idea.
Wow thx 🙏🏽 I never would have thought about this
Had tiles like that...they started to lift before I was headed out of town...got back and they collapsed
I tried that but when I cut mine I suggest you don't it vacuums to your body and you can't shower so I'm still looking for a solutions I might go back to the full shower and let the magnets hold to the shower
I actually moved my shower to other wall with the window because I love windows in the shower nothing better than a cool breeze in a steaming hot shower
Great idea,,its a duuuhhh why didn't I think of that type of thing...lol
If you were looking to retile the bathroom you could probably just redgard the whole trim and then paint over it when it's done being tiled... in theory
Wow! You just help me so much!!!!
I just moved into a new apartment which has a shortened shower curtain over the window and last night I took my first shower in this place. That window shower curtain stuck to me so I tried to stand away from it and it still found me. How can you keep the shower curtain closer to the wall / window?
We used little magnets at the bottom of the curtain when we lived in our first apartment. It wasn't perfect, but it did help most of the time :)
Should you also tile the ceiling? I'm guessing it wouldn't hurt to raise the curtain to prevent water from getting on the top of the wood framed window also.
Outstanding idea!
LOL YEP. This is basically our bathroom, except ours is pink, hee. Luckily the former owners put in a solid shower curtain rod, and it's fine. And while I'd love to refab to a more modern finish on the tile, it's in great shape, so (for now) it stays. :-)!
Nice, easy solution!
Clingfilm the wooden window frame...
You cover the whole window with shower curtain only the bathroom window
hahah Genius! Still sucks though how many houses have a window in the shower. Like who ever thought, "oh hey, we should put a window in the place where we pee and poo and get naked on..
FOr ventilation. We didn't have fans and all sorts installed back then...
A frosted waterproof bay window would be ok. Make bathroom look bigger
was looking for a video on how to caulk the darn thing, but okay!
thank you
Dang... How simple was that!! 🤦🏿♀️
Didn’t fix the thing masking a problem is not fixing the problem
Very helpful
That’s great idea but still you accumulate mold on roof behind the attics
Or just replace the molding and tile around it
You're such a flipper dude that was probably the cheapest thing I've heard someone say.
"Yeah we could remove it, make it water proof" "we can just put a clear shower curtain" and I look at the original old ass 1920s window trim and I see all the caulk all over that decaying wood and filler with just new paint.
If the curtain is cut shorter, do you think it would stay in place or would the water move it around, and window still get wet? I was also thinking of just putting a plastic 'curtain' the size of the window. Feedback appreciated. Thanks for posting.
Renate A Got to let air move around it. Shower/water won't push it away. I do this. It works. Looks like I'm 3 years late in responding though!
I must be smarter then I thought. Lol this is what I did. Lol
you are a God
Looks almost exa like my bathroom. 😭Noooooooooooo that sucks so bad when it gets stuck to you.
I know his wife hates him lol
wow
hmm no, the humidity will fuck your bathroom and the rest of your house... The only way is to open the window and put a fan. But when it's winter, you're fucked unless you don't care wasting money on heating. That's why modern houses have vents in the bathrooms and kitchen.
I'm actually looking for a way to put a fan with some kind of valve in the window of my bathroom, but anyways cold will get in...
yuck
This is an awful solution. Do it right and install a proper window and install it correctly.
Your funny!
👍
plans from woodprix are awesome!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Tacky solution. Sorry.
I've been in construction for 27 yrs ... I would never use your suggestion.. do it the right way .. takes just as long to make a crap sandwich as it does a good sandwich ... Do it right the first time........
Tyhler Novac What way do you suggest?
You've just ostracized everyone who can't afford a guy "in construction" or have the know how to fix it properly so it won't leak and cause worse problems. This works. It's affordable. Everyone can do it.
what is the right way?
What about people in apartment buildings?
All that posturing and you never even suggested "the right way". People like this are the worst🙄
