It was supposed to be a more cost-effective alternative to the M14. Made from mostly cast parts, I believe. Check out Forgotten Weapons' video on it, of you haven't already

So instead of it being a gas piston like it's older brother, they just went with a direct impingememt system! So simple I love it. I want to get me one! I have so many ars, but having something different like this would be awesome!
It's neither a D.I. system nor a true piston based system. It uses a very old gas trap operating system. This system was once used on early variants of M1 Garand, but for some reason it was ditched for long stroke piston operation on later variants. It was also used in Gewehr 41. The Mini-14 and Mini-30 are truly the last of their kind, because no other rifle uses this system these days.
What a fantastic video to help teach beginners and enthusiasts alike the principals of rifle fire. I use this to teach my grand children when it's time for them to become responsible gun owner/operators .
This is a very good representation but I must say that the action happens very quickly, much faster than what’s depicted here. This gun has the potential of firing nearly as fast as a fully automatic weapon.
@@soloser-1tipodeporahi.899 not last time i checked. Im from NY right by PA and they have tons of stuff we cant get. And we can get autoloading semiauto for now.
@@Syntax_Error_404 I’m also assuming that it wouldn’t be full auto because of the bolt would ride the bolt and not go off and it it did go off it would be out of battery
I have an early Mini-14, and I can see some differences in the design. For example, mine has a plunger style ejector in the bolt, while this one has a fixed blade ejector. I don't know if either is better than the other.
Hi Dwayne so I was recently shooting my Mini14 and realized that hiding in my .223 box was a.204 ruger and now the wrong bullet is stuck in the gun and the bolt won’t pull back do you have any suggestions?
As a gunsmith, you have no idea how relieved I was when I found out that the Mini 14 was long-stroke instead of short-stroke. Short-stroke pistons are usually superior to long-stroke pistons due to how efficient they are with gas, but how the M14 did this was by having a short-stroke piston head and a long-stroke operating rod, meaning what you gain in efficiency you lose in that you have a weight on the front-end of your gun that moves erratically, throwing off accuracy. This is also a problem with basically every .308 rifle the Military has adopted since the 80's, with the only exception I remember being the SR25. So, it's nice knowing that Ruger saw the pointlessness of making the Mini14 short-stroke. He still made a massive weight, but at least it's in a way that makes more logical sense.
So, can this video author or anyone out in the audience tell me why it's so hard to cock the gun manually? I slowed down the cut out animation to .25 speed but didn't help
Is there anything which prevents the hammer from striking the firing pin before the bolt is rotated closed? I know for certain the trigger can be pulled and the hammer released before the bolt closes (it has happened when my Mini-14 jams). It looks like the firing pin is exposed when the bolt is furthest forward but before the bolt rotates closed.
Really? I just fired mine today, basically right out of the box. Shoots perfectly and was pinging targets like crazy. Had to have gone through over 100 rounds too. Look at getting it fixed
Mine jammed right out of the box. I am going to try to fix it by putting a shim between the ejector plate and the ejector plate cover. I saw on the web that the play between the two pieces has caused a lot of jamming by failing to eject the spent cartridges. My cartridges get extracted but they don't always eject, causing a jam.
Rotating Bolt baby!!! Same system as the M1 Garrand, M1 Carbine, and M14.

So basically what I'm seeing is that if the first stage of the trigger is removed/ restricted you essentially turn the firearm into a full auto
That is essentially the case with all semi auto rifles. Now say goodbye to your dog 🫠
Yes, but it also becomes "full auto until magazine is empty", which is less than ideal 😅
