I'm an old hippie, gettin' closer to "knockin' on heavens door". Here's hoping we've all made a good impact on everyone's life we've touched along the way. ❤
I had NO idea this song was a trilogy! I remember when the second one came out, and of course I remember the first one. Finding this third installment is like being a kid on Christmas morning!! LOVE IT!!
Erik Vinson I actually discovered the song the other day. Then I found out it had a sequel I loved as well. And now I'm hearing the 3rd one for the first
Vietnam. , 1965/66 101St. Airborne Div. / combat veteran , what a some and a past we will always remember! Wishing I was on the Wall , but soon I’ll see my brothers! ./ now 71 but still PTDS and more but can not Forget , Hell was Nam ! I be gone soon but I Hope God will understand what I did and remember I was a Young Kid and how my life ended in Nam ! Thanks to My Brothers in Arms !
You gave yourself to serve, my brother. I was a little too young for Nam, but know friends and family that did, and witnessed the aweful effects of PTSD (my late brother-in-laws brother). You've already leaned towards your fellow man, so keep on leanin' on Jesus, and you'll finish well, and go safely home! Love and peace brother. ❤
Enlisted in 1971. Just in time for the end of Vietnam. Spent 9 years in SE Asia, and finished with 20 years total military time before retirement. This Old Hippie trilogy hit just right for me. I'm 70 years old, and the lyrics line up pretty close. My two sons like them, but the grandkids not so much. It brings back memories, good and bad, each time I listen.
I was a few years too young to be a "hippie", but having just turned 55 a couple months ago, these "old hippie" songs have a certain resonance. Knowing I'm closer to "the end" than I am to "the beginning", and having seen so many precious to me pass on before, has given me a bit of perspective. Not wisdom, Lord knows, but at least a better way of looking at things.
The Old Hippie songs speaks of my Dad's generation being of the Vietnam Era instead mine. But, having served in Iraq I've always felt like I can relate to them somehow. I love all three of them!
I'm 58....I was raised here in East Texas and still live here........and this song nails it....sorta like someone looked in my heart & wrote this song......thank yall.....God Bless.
I'm soon to be 54 and all 3 of these songs have followed my life to a tee. I can't believe I made it this far in life with all I've been through. Yeah, I'm really trying to keep life straight with "the Man" before I go knockin' on heavens door. Here's to all of us "Old Hippies", no matter what stage version you're living in.
Even though I was born in 63, I consider myself a Hippie, I was born in the flower child generation, and I feel all the old hippie songs speak to me, they describe my life, how I feel, my attitude on life, and like in the first version, my species is slowly fading away, all the old hippie songs, brings a tear to my eyes, in today’s world I find it difficult to adjust, I’m constantly thinking of the old days, it’s now that I understand why my parents, my Aunt always talked about how things were when they were young, Thankyou Bellamy brothers, God Bless you
Thank You so much for being an old CV-43 Veteran as all who have served mean more to me than most will ever know. ( Just another old hippie waitn' to knock on heavens door )
54susieq ! Splendid, your photo ! ....hey, we're not confused by their issues, before we go...this song stays super epic today as well. ! ..... 23jun19
There's not too many things in this life that can make me tear up. But when I listen to these songs, in sequence, by the time this one begins, I do. Thank you brothers for these songs. You have no idea how many memories and feelings that come over me when I listen. Nam 72-74
Awesome throwback to a great song. These guys never being awarded duet of the year by the ACM was just in indication of where country music would wind up! Real country music for sure. First heard this on a Sunday morning radio show called ACMR. Great music!
The story told of this man through all three songs (old hippie 1,2,and 3) seem to written about my old man. I remember him singing the first one while we were working together in the old crappy garage we had when I was 5 or 6 years old. The sequel came around when I was just starting to lose my way and dad was finding his. Maybe it was fate or something else but I only found part three just now after dad just turned 55 and I'm just about to the age of the first song. It's sad this saga isn't played more on the radio these days. It has more values than any of the new style of country they play these days.
It seems we tend to end up on lost paths while in the prime of our lives. Fortunately, most of us eventually get on the right track. Thanks for the comment.
I love these songs! I never thought they would take on such a live, as they have. I DO remember be about 10, 12 years old, hearing the Old hippie, the first time. The second, I can't remember..... And, I heard this, now.
Iam so happy I come across this song tonight....Real people, the ones you look forward to see. They want nothing from you but friendship, nothing more. Honest people are hard to come by now days....Peace
what a fantastic song. thank u so much ill be 53 next month and so much truth over the years. god bless the guys and gals in uniforms as well. my son was in iraq once and Afghanistan twice and now in Texas.
Lyrics channel my soul...the Mekong Delta is far away but never all that distant but as the brilliant words of this song speak volumes to an older man like me...Bless...
This song really is for all of us who were the "summer of love children". And for all of us out there who are becoming endangered species. Thanks for the posting...love the tune and the memories...peace.
Count your blessings, you are living the dream life. (Durban, South Africa). I rode in my younger days, bout did not have the life you have. God blessed you, Jerry.

I so love watching this video. I used to live on Bellamy Brothers BLVD. In Dade City years ago, and you couldn't have picked a ride down a road that looked anything more like it without going there.
What a great song! I didn't realize til now that there are three versions (4 if you include the Christmas one) that talk about the stages in the "hippie's" life.
