  • This video is a redo from the video I made on this day one whole year ago. I was about 25 lbs heavier and I had this strange fade haircut my stylist was giving me at the time. I also thought my filming/practice area looked a little bare and the memorabilia I did have was too clustered. Now, I’ve learned how to present myself and I’m happy with the way I look. I hope you all enjoy this video, as I am making this the definitive version of this song. I’m going to copy and paste the description (slightly rewritten) from last year’s video.
On this day in 1776, America gained its independence. In 1976, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers recorded this amazing song that would be one of their signature songs. This is one of my favorite songs by them, and one I have fun playing. I couldn't think of a better time to record and play it.
This cover was played on a 2016 Rickenbacker 660/12 (a guitar Tom Petty himself designed back in 1989/90, and the model carried his name from 1991-1997) through my Fender ‘68 Custom Vibro Champ Reverb with the amp's digital Hall Reverb engaged and a Keeley Compressor Plus pedal for some tight compression that that a Rickenbacker 12-string really needs to truly jangle and chime.
Just like the band did from 2005-2017, I have my guitar tuned down a half-step for easier singing. Tom even played his original 660/12 in the famous "Live From Gatorville 2006" show that runs on AXS TV from time to time, and he even used that guitar that when I saw the band in Houston, TX on their final tour in 2017. He only used the 660/12 for the stops in Atlanta and Houston; for the remainder of the tour, he used a 1966 Fender Electric XII.
The 660/12 with its smaller solid body, sounds amazing tuned down. For the final chord, like Tom Petty would do on the final two tours of his life, I turned all my pedals on for some feedback and strange sounds.
For all Rickenbacker fans out there, this guitar has no modifications on it, but the strings I'm using are the same ones I use on my Carl Wilson model: a set of Curt Mangan strings that were custom assembled by me to Rickenbacker's recommended gauges direct from Curt Mangan’s website. I only use Curt Mangan strings on my Rickenbacker 12 and 6 string guitars, in the Rickenbacker recommended gauges.
