  • On what would’ve been Tom Petty’s 73rd birthday, I bash out this little known gem from the Heartbreakers’ final studio album, Hypnotic Eye. I adore this one and the big fat sound Tom and Mike (Scott Thurston only played tambourine on the studio master) got from their guitars. I wish this one had been more popular, it has everything going for it.
When the band played the song live, Tom used his 2002 Fender Custom Shop 1963 Telecaster that he’d later gift to Eddie Vedder during the Heartbreakers’ final tour. Keeping this in mind, I did a shootout earlier this week between the Broadcaster and the Rosewood Tele. There was a harshness the Rosewood from the staggered pole piece pickup had where as the Broadcaster had a flat pole that made it sound a bit too smooth. I felt I nailed the tone, thanks to the Pure Vintage ‘64 grey bottom pickups, pretty close to what Tom probably had in his Tele. For comparison, below is the link to when Tom and the boys played it on Jimmy Kimmel Live around the time of Hypnotic Eye’s release.
Guitar is 2022 Fender George Harrison Rosewood Telecaster, amp is 2021 Fender ‘68 Custom Vibro Champ, effects are ORIGINAL Way Huge Red Llama Overdrive from 1997, Catalinbread Topanga Spring Reverb and MXR Carbon Copy during the two solos close to what Tom played.
Happy birthday, Tom. We miss you down here!
And yes…the Beatles collaboration between myself, ‪@sampopkin‬ , ‪@davidmontis7259‬ and ‪@mendips09‬ is still happening, as well as another one we hope to release the week before Thanksgiving.
