    I personally think the cons of doing a PhD outweigh the pros. Like everyone else, I thought I wanted to do a PhD as well. I'm glad I did my Master's over jumping straight into a PhD. My impression of academia has changed over time. As a Master's student, you would gain an insider's view of how academia is really like; it's not all unicorns and rainbows. It's true that people expect less from Master students, but that's no excuse for complacency. If you want to publish papers in good journals, your work has to be as good as a PhD's. You will see professors do politics, and oftentimes, it is this that gets them to where they are in academia. It's not just about being a good researcher (sometimes I wondered how some of them got their PhDs in the first place). I saw a lot of my PhD friends succumbed to mental illnesses, especially depression and chronic anxiety. The environment is plain toxic, the exploitation of students and adjuncts is real. The chances of you landing a job as a postdoc is very low because the competition is high (too many PhD graduates and limited fundings), and even lower as an entry-level lecturer because openings are only available when some old professor retires or the university opens a new department (which is a rare occurrence anyways). If you decide to join the industry after earning your PhD with zero working experience, employers will most likely think you are overqualified and will pay you lower than what you'd expect as a PhD holder. I would caution everyone to think really hard (do mental acrobatics or whatever) about doing a PhD, it is very psychologically costly if you end up working in toxic environments. If you must, make sure you are bonded to a university or any entity in the industry via scholarships to ensure immediate job placements. You are intelligent, and you don't need a PhD to prove that.

      well, i needed that. Stress is major for me at masters level (2 1/2 year master). It is killing me, and made me sick. But the thing is I am crazily passionate about a specific area. I said to myself that If I am gonna apply then It will have to be something i will trully enjoy.

    I think it depends on your specialty and degree of choice. People need to stop snowflaking onto that truth. For instance, a Phd in bio-engineering or Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is useful and will get you more leading opportunities than a Bsc. A PhD in lecture or history is really saturated for jobs opportunities.

    This was more like pros and cons of PhD. The best way to decide if you should do it or not, is to do a masters. Then you will know if PhD is something you want to deal with. Masters is almost the same as a PhD, except shorter and expectations are slightly less, so is the importance and your value. But the experience tells you a lot, and you will deal with all the cons mentioned in the video. You will also learn how to chose a supervisor, and have an insider view of academia before embarking on 4-6 years of the same work - PhD. There are pros but a lot of it actually depends on the supervisor. Some supervisors are like 9-5 working hours is minimum and then some. They give you no flexibility. They even get disappointed in you when you ask for vacation time that is allocated by the university. I had to deal with 2 weeks of tooth infection and couldn't see a dentist because of the amount of work I was doing even after I was done submitting my thesis. Travelling the world: Also depends on the line of work and supervisor, sometimes you will just travel once a year or two, and all you will do is attend a conference; typically there is not much time to actually 'travel'. Salary? Not always that good, at least in Canada. In my department minimum salary a supervisor could get away with paying is $20,000 to PhD students. And from that salary you pay your tuition. If you are an international student then you will pay a hefty amount of tuition and have nothing left for living cost! For A LOT of cases in academia, supervisors don't have enough industry connections, or even if they do, they don't encourage an industry career for you or think about your benefits from an industrial connection. You are on your own. Some supervisors discourage you being a TA, or joining societies, they just want you to be their worker. The worst one: I have seen some people finish PhD in 6 years, while in Europe it take 3 years, which is the same amount of time it takes people to do a masters in Canada (2-3 years). Ridiculous! What is the difference then between someone doing a masters in Canada and someone doing a PhD in Europe? Summary, the key to a good life while doing a PhD or MSc is to choose your supervisor wisely and be clear about the expectations a supervisor has from you and the expectations you have from your education. @Amina, if you have some ideas about and could make some videos about how to choose a good supervisor that would be awesome. I don't know exactly if it is valid in the UK, but at least in Canada and in my experience this can be a make or break deal.

    Personally (from a muslimah perspective), I think a PhD is only worth it if it allows you to access jobs that can be of real benefit to the community. So for instance (hypothetically), I would start a PhD with a sincere intention to Allah that I want to help my community and the people at large later on, so that I can use this PhD inshaAllah as an asset for my dunya and akhira. And also, during the difficulties of the PhD, I would remember this intention and it would make it easier for me. Otherwise, I would not have the energy/motivation to go through it.

    ok here is a reality check for O-A levels students. Listen here, Having a Degree/Master/PhD doesn't guarantees you a good life. Have friends who are O level leavers earning up 80k a year. Most of them works at offshore rigs. Having 3 months off annually with full salary paid. Having precious time to spend with their family. Having 2 mansions and own a number of properties. And at my past workplace we have colleagues with a PhD qualification earning about 38k/year, working more than 8 hours a day, sometimes during the weekend as well , getting scolded from the executives, a maximum vacation for only two weeks in a year (with the executives pestering them even during their holidays).Oh yes and m only a diploma holder (which is why my English sucks) who is self employed full time trading stocks and currencies as we speak earning about $400 - $5K a day. Also this was ended with a lol, hence it's partially a joke. Third you're an idiot cartoon lol. Your IQ must be seriously low, words like creepy or sad are what children use when they can't formulate an actual argument to which an offence has been committed. Your emotions are irrelevant to me nor are you the parties which whom i suggested should hit me up. If you did hit me up considering you sound like a child or a rather intellectually feeble adult i would not take your advances even if i didn't have a fiance lol. If you are male even worse so. Finally whether it be you tube comment section Facebook message a park or anywhere, it is irrelevant whereby a person chose to make a movement on another persons romantic advancement. This type of logic you proposed is again low level. I can even make a move while taking a shit in the toilet if it's a shared facility toilet mixed gendered ones in a different cubicle. Yes i specifically chose a rather "strange" sounding scenario to express the abstract. As long as there is no foul play any thing is not only possible but is fine. Damn finding low IQ people on you tube comment section is another hobby of mine or i could perhaps be wrong and you are just a troll in which case i say good for you, ;)x

    • @KAIZORIANEMPIRE
      @KAIZORIANEMPIRE 4 года назад

      @Shamar Noble I am not part of any internet memes. My IQ is 143 which makes me a genius by some standards. I have 3 published scientific papers and I have a PhD in quantum physics. I doubt you do. I doubt you do on basis that you used the term creepy and sad. This of course does not preclude your intellect but if you actually "believe" those terms are relevant then yes you're low IQ. If it's just a shaming attempt then you're just a troll which is fine. I am one too. There are of course other infinite deviations but one can't make an argument considering everything and yes formal education doesn't mean much nor do I consider it meaningful interpretation of intelligence. I do however respect IQ. So if your IQ is more than 105 then you're not an idiot. Well done. You're just an average sheep. These two females probably have an IQ 125 as that's the average for PhD. Yours as a cartoon I can only imagine
