In this video I discuss why you should do a PhD and the benefits of completing a doctoral qualification by reflecting on some of my own personal experiences both as a PhD student and as a PhD supervisor.

What are your reasons for doing a PhD?
Don't sleep with your prof.
Because i want to engage in research
@@chimmalambo5023 I knew, but never sleep with your prof. for exchange.
Idk. I just do it
This is so helpful! ❤ so glad I found your channel.
Thank you Hayley for sharing your knowledge & expertise- I have an interview tomorrow
Your thesis is quite big. Congratulations and thanks for the video. After my masters in peace and conflict studies, I intend to do a PhD in same discipline. Your video is an inspiration.
Thank you very much for this!
Love your 4th reason the most! And it seems to be my biggest motivation
Thank you Hayley, that was so helpful 😊
Thank you for a Great explanation!
You just go a new subscriber. This video gave me a new perspective on doing a PhD especially as a woman.Thank u for this.
Thanks fot taking the time to post your informative videos. I have just finished my MA and will now spend a year researching the areas I wish to pursue on my PhD, at 55!!. Your vids are inspirational!
I’m glad you have found them helpful, good luck with your PhD research!
Thank you so much for posting a video like this, your career Im looking into so helpful as a a PHD in travel and tourism isn’t as heard of as you mentioned like science or something else of that nature. I love learning about travel and tourism. I feel like it’s something you can learn and never get bored of it’s talking about real life and the world! Not boring stuff like maths 🤣. As it’s so niche it’s great that you are showing this off.
I certainly love studying tourism, it definitely doesn’t get boring!
Very insightful professor❤
amazing content!!
Thanks Dr Hayley
Hi, your paper The commodification of English language teaching (2018) was instrumental in my masters thesis on teacher identity! Thanks, now entering a PhD…
I’m glad to hear it was helpful!
thank you dr hayley I have interview with my professor today
Thank you so much 🙏🏾
Thank You so much ..
Very helpful video. Actually, I'm an engineering professional in the Oil and Energy Industry. in my work experience, I've never seen a job ad with requirements to have a PhD in other to get a job in BP, Shell, etc. No big Oil conglomerate has ever asked for a PhD. However, my ambition is to be on top of my field, lead the industry and be a force to reckon with. Do I need a PhD to be on that level?
excellent dear
Thanks, Hayley! Everything is fine...the sound of the writing is a bit uncomfortable, what I have found.
Did you find this helpful? I also have a video on why NOT to do a PhD! ruclips.net/video/yZXGU0D0YQg/видео.html
Thanks for this video. I have been working for government doing earth science research for six years. I have increasingly realized that to continue progressing and eventually run my own lab, I need a PhD. I do indeed love science and adding to human knowledge in my field. But unfortunately, I have anxiety issues and I'm daunted by the time commitment, sacrafices, and financial implications of starting grad school. Videos like yours at least help me think things through.
try Dr Rupert Sheldrake on the corrupted corperation system that created scientism, and not real science that can be shown & repeated.
kind regards all
What about doing your PhD from online universities?
I have a different question. Did you work while completing your PhD? If yes, how did you manage a work, life n school balance? Were you able to qualify for grants n scholarships to cover your tuition? Thank you Jouli

Are you offering to pay for my doctorate?
Dr Staiton, does age inhibit the drive to acquire a Phd?
I don’t think so
I have arrived at home. No other comment.❤❤❤❤
Wow i juat met my future wife x
Epic waste of money
It really depends on your subject area and career aspirations as to whether doing a PhD is value for money or not, but I am sure in some cases you will be right!
@@TourismTeacher fair point, I'm just seeing so many graduates burdened with debt decades later. Selecting a marketable field of study is key.
@@kevinboehm1615 yes, this is true. My PhD actually was a lot cheaper than a degree, I’m not sure if this is the case all over the world or just in the U.K. though?
Phd is paid (funded almost all the time)
