- If you have a PhD interview coming up you will need to make sure that you are prepared. To maximise your chance of being successful in your PhD interview I have shared with you my PhD advice and tips for aspiring PhD students.
From demonstrating your enthusiasm for the subject and the university you are applying to, to researching your potential PhD supervisors and writing a high quality PhD proposal, there is plenty that you can do to make sure that you pass your PhD interview with flying colours!

I'm from Poland and here we need to have a proposal and potential supervisor before we even apply. They can't be part of the recruiting committee and you find your supervisor yourself. The exam is more like an admission exam. I have mine tomorrow, so thank you for your useful tips

I'm Dorothy from Rwanda in East African Community. I do thank you for this empowering video. I applied and am still applying for PhD program for Fall 2022. I will do the first PhD interview this mid-January. However I am not fluent in English, I'm in intermediate level but still working hard to emprove my English speaking. What advice could you give me to pass the interview successfully as an intermediate English speaker?
I recommend you do some practice interviews with a native speaker who can point out any mistakes that you might make?

thank you for the video. It was very handful. I have a question. I am current phd student and applied for another program I find more interesting. However, I have not have any publications, though I have been in the academia for a long time. I feel like that would be a disadvantage. Do you have any suggestions to have to explain it and demonstrate enthusiasm to make publications when if I am selected? I really am enthusiastic in deed, but I wasn’t confidence to send publications yet and also overworked currently.
It depends on your university and how important publications are to them, but I’m sure if you explain that you haven’t had the time yet but it will be a priority in future they will understand?

Please I’m going to Read a neuroscience program which requires rotations. Do I need to have a proposal because I don’t know which topic to research on yet.
I expect you would need a proposal but check the details with the university you are applying to

I got an interview offer, and the professor who will interview me is not the person who I wrote in my SoP that I want to work with. Do you have any recommendations to address this if this is the case? For example, should I tell him I wanted to work with you (but he might know I did not write his name in my SoP)? I'm nervous..
I'm having the same dilemma currently. Interview is in few days and I don't know the best way to approach it, knowing fully well that the faculty member to interview me isn't part of the three potential advisors I mentioned in my SOP. Anyone to help with clues based on past experience?

Complete and utter bullshit. So many people are applying for PhD programs that it doesn't pay to even try. I took a tour last week of a major Tier 1 university's Materials Science lab. I was told that there are very few academic positions, only about 3% of PhD grads can find a job at a university.
