During my REU I watched a postdoc interview. The PI would ask a question mute himself and put his hood on. Wild experience

I love how you humanise those academic creeps - sitting there catching warm, fuzzy feelings down there. 😆

Idea for a video: I sometimes feel like your advise is a bit narrowed to your field (biology, I think?). It would be cool if some day you could invite academics from other fields and have them compare experiences ir something.
Im particularl, I'm thinking of theoretical sciences, where there are no experiments, just a lot of math. You talk a lot about experiments, experiments going wrong, etc and as a computer science PhD student, I cannot always easily transfer that to my experiences.

I got tag teamed by the two PIs, they played good cop/bad cop with me. The guy was nice and wanted to know details about my previous work, while the woman jumped in aggressively every 5 minutes or so with the basic WHY DO YOU WANT TO JOIN THIS LAB. WHAT ARE YOUR WEAKNESSES. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS.
I needed a double shot of rum after but I got the job :D

I got asked a really tricky one earlier this year, it was something along the lines of: "Youre a promising candidate for this position, but that goes both ways- you'd be joining us at a top institution and university, so why should we wait (4 months) until you are available to start?"
I really didnt know how to answer it without coming across as too overconfident...

@@lumbiyoDscientist My answer was something along the lines of 'I'd hope that my experience and skills are enough to convince you that even though I might be starting later, I'd be productive enough when I do start to be able to justify the wait'.
I didn't end up getting the position though so take that with a grain of salt 😆

Not the warm fuzzies ☠️☠️ no but really thank you for this because I would have gone into the interview talking about my star sign and my love of cats if they asked me about myself.

Thanks Andy for posting this video. Such an apt time for me since I am finishing my PhD soon. I do have a question, do you think it is a turn off for the potential employer if one wants to potentially consider pregnancy during the post-doc period?

Andy, any experience doping ZnO with Al for transparent electrodes? Seems the conductivity of ZnO is a little too high for some high speed applications. half joking
