    The cruise control, regardless of vehicle, work essentially the same. These have three main buttons: on/off switch, set & resume. The set button also works as the deceleration button, and the resume button works as the acceleration button.
    When setting the speed, bring the vehicle to the desired speed with the throttle - ensure that the cruise control is on, and hit the set button. That will engage the cruise control.
    On most vehicles, there is a light on the dash that will indicate that the cruise control is engaged. If you want the vehicle to slow, simply hold the set button and the vehicle will decelerate so long as you hold the button. If you want the vehicle to accelerate, hold the resume button. So long as you hold the button, the vehicle will accelerate.
    If you want the vehicle to accelerate 2 kilometres and hour or 2 miles an hour depending on country, simply click the resume button 2 times. If you want the vehicle to decelerate 5 kilometres an hour or 5 miles per hour, simply click the button 5 times.
    Cruise control will improve fuel economy, make you more relaxed over longer trips, and reduce distracted driving.
    Good luck on your road test.

    I have not been able to explore cruise control on my own (just once in driving school & it was totally awesome; the car was even able to drive driverless) but just the thought of being able to fully concentrate on traffic & driving but no speed is giving me goosebumps. I mean how awesome would that be. Plus, it's even good for fuel economy & you can do Mindgames like: will I have to slow down or can I go cruise control all the way through that road... Except on the Autobahn; there I'll continue to just go flatout (or the speed limit, depending on what's the case), which is kinda like cruise control if you go the max speed your car is able to go with your foot on the floor.. for city driving, cross country, construction or school zones etc it seems to be perfect though... Must take away a lot of stress actually.

    Cruise controls are getting better in some cars, my cruise also has a distance set, that will automatically slow down if your distance from the car in front decreases. Though, you should always be ready to brake if the person in front of you suddenly slows down, but it's great when you want to maintain flow of traffic on the freeway and you want to make sure you keep a safe distance behind another car.

    Dr. Rick August:
    Many salutations! As I am prowling around on the Internet trying to get Favor Runner to cooperate on my phone (at which I was unsuccessful and decided to delete the app), I came upon this video. How I wish that I had known this sooner!!! On 31 @ August 2019, I was scheduled to conduct a DoorDash delivery session in Jourdanton/Pleasanton; in order to get to those cities, I had to first drive through Poteet.
    Upon going outside of the Anderson Loop, I at first tried to stay around 60-75 mph so that I could drive to Poteet without being challenged by the police; a quarter-hour later, I started to panic a little at not having arrived in Poteet even after confirming that I was headed the correct way so I sped up into the neighborhood of 80-95 mph and breached above the 100 mph mark at least once. I am not going to lie, Dr. August; I was a little thrilled that the 2019 Kia Optima I was driving could do this. What snapped me back to reality is the Atascosa County Sheriff deputy on patrol that was ahead of me on my right-hand side; some frenzied deceleration and a low-key overtake later, I made it though Poteet and was quite low-class as I made my way to Jourdanton after seeing that Deputy go pull over somebody else in my rear-view mirror.
    If I had known to use the cruise control, I would have avoided that speeding ticket scare and I would have enjoyed the night driving home commute a lot more. Right now, I am debating whether to rent another vehicle or go long to get a vehicle leased. I imagine that a vehicle lease is a lengthier vehicle rental in which I would have to take on some of the vehicle ownership responsibilities (id est, interchanging the fluids and consumable components); once I get that sorted out, I would have more time to do the whole InstaCart gig and see if I get enough commerce to make back the monthly lease payment. What do you think, Dr. August?

    Cc can reduce fuel economy if you go up hills. It can also keep you from having good following Distance or staggered position because you dont want to change it. You also might put your right foot in a different position which can affect quick braking. So you have to be careful when using it.

    I use cruise control for many of the reasons stated in the video, primarily fuel economy and that automated feeling......BUT, I think cruise control can get in the way of fuel efficiency on certain downhills (Not excessively long ones) and put wear on the car. If I'm doing 65 and I see a short downhill coming, I click CC off as soon I feel the car would accelerate were the CC not engaged and let the speed build up to say 72 and hold the pedal in the same position as when I clicked it off (pedal depth the car thought was good to hold 65) until the car goes back to 65 when the grade evens out or an uphill starts. With CC engaged on a downhill, the system will engage the engine and/or tran to try to maintain 65. I think that's a waste of energy.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  Год назад

      When I'm on cruise control, I tend to put it in the middle of the footwell. I''ll move it around though. And if there's a potential hazard in front, or I might need to slow down, I hover my finder over the cancel button for the cruise. I will put my left foot on the dead pedal and my right foot on the right side of the foot well. It's good to move around in your seat and take a break every couple of hours. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Rick, I really enjoy your videos! I have logged over 250,000 miles in Motorcoaches, and probably close to a million in personal vehicles. The Coach drivers at our garage are fairly split on Cruise Control. I must say though, I find that using Cruise Control actually takes me off of my A-game. I feel that it allows me to get into a kind of slump where I tend to pay less attention. I also feel that I can give my passengers a much smoother ride with my foot on the pedal, especially on the curvy and hilly interstates we have here in Pennsylvania and surrounding states. I also find it very easy to maintain an even speed and ride with my foot. Is there something I am missing on Cruise? I just don't see the benefit of it. Thanks for all your great work!

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  2 года назад +1

      Hi Eric - excellent questions, and something that I've been giving some thought to of late.
      It's definitely a human behavioural question.
      And it's probably going to end up as a chapter in the book that's formulating in my brain and in computer files.
      The first benefit of cruise control is increased fuel economy.
      All engines today are Electronic Fuel injection, and simply give you better fuel economy on cruise.
      I've driven in PA and every other state with a big truck on the Eastern Seaboard, and cruise control every time.
      I suspect with the hills and curves, you're slowing down and speeding up, but I'd have to be in the vehicle to know that for sure.
      The reason I’ve been giving this some thought is that my girlfriend said the same thing on a recent highway trip through the Rocky Mountains.
      She tried it for a while and then got bored.
      On a different trip, to the same destination, I drove and was able to get her 2018 Volkswagen Golf 1.8L turbo engine to average more than 45mpg.
      With that boredom, I think the analogy is those that quit smoking.
      After they quit smoking, they have to find something to do with their hands.
      It’s the same for driving on cruise; drivers have to find something to do with their mind.
      I use audio books and think that these work to keep the mind occupied.
      I’m also of the professional opinion that cruise control reduces distracted driving because you don’t have to monitor your speed.
      Thus, that’s one less thing that you have to be concerned about when driving.
      However, as you said-and I know it’s true for others-that yourself and other driver’s don’t feel as engaged with the driving task.
      My question becomes: what am I doing that others are not? Or, what is happening with my brain that I’m able to drive for hours upon hours on cruise control?
      And how do I teach what I’m doing to others?
      Because if more than ½ of drivers are thinking the same has yourself, and I know they are, the cruise control, adaptive cruise control, and lane assist features are redundant on a vehicle.
      I’ll let you know.
      All the best, Cheers Rick

    • @ericharvey8149
      @ericharvey8149 2 года назад +1

      @@smartdrivetest Thank you for the well-thought out reply! The smoking analogy is a good one! I have been told by the owner of the bus garage that I drive for that I get very good fuel economy. (I also drove some old 2-stroke Detroit Diesels which were not electronically controlled, so maybe that experience gives me a bias...I steel prefer those older engines!) I don't feel I slow down much for curves, but again, I really try to focus on a smooth ride for the passengers. I feel I can keep the vehicle from leaning as much in curves without cruise. However, I think this is an interesting issue and continue to try different techniques! I have ridden with drivers who do not keep an even speed well and continually get in and out of the gas, and this is annoying and does not give a smooth ride. Interestingly enough, my girlfriend loves cruise. Lol. I will continue to watch and learn from your videos. May we all keep the shiny side up! Take care! Eric

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  2 года назад

      After I wrote that comment, I was talking to my massage therapist, who is a good friend of mine. He said that there are a lot of physical benefits because when you're working the throttle over long trips, you body is crooked and it's putting stress on the hip flexor. Yes, I agree. Driver's that are speeding up and slowing down all the time tend to drive me a bit crazy. So, teaching driver's to use cruise is not a simple task. Lots to consider. Thank you for the discussion. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Hi, Rick, I'm back on another video with another question!
    At around 6:40, you mention that you should keep cruise control set when passing unless there is traffic in the passing lane behind you. This reminds me of a dissonance I often experience when in the passing lane which is that I feel a social pressure from the cars behind me (often tailgating) when I'm passing but not passing very quickly.
    For example: if the speed limit is 55 MPH, the car in front of me is going the speed limit, and I want to go a few MPH over, I'll move into the passing lane when I have an opening; but sometimes, as I'm passing, a car will gain on me and begin tailgating me. I usually increase my speed beyond my comfortable limit (for tickets, not safety, lmao) until I've completed my pass, at which point I decelerate to my desired speed. Even though I'm technically passing, I always feel like I'm in the wrong because I'm also somewhat impeding the flow of traffic by not moving back over more quickly.
    What do you do when that happens?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Hiccups - thank you for your comment and great questions. Yes, there is a great deal of pressure in what I call social driving - the pressure to not impede other traffic. When I'm passing other traffic on a multi-lane highway, most of the time, I'll just leave it on cruise. However, if my speed is not high enough or the other vehicle is speeding up and slowing down which prevents me from passing and the traffic is backing up behind me, than I will accelerate to pass. But those instances are rare and only happen now and again. Most of the time you can just pass and move back over when you're done. But as you said, there's a lot of pressure which governs the action of many drivers in what I call social driving - the social pressure to be predictable and not impede other traffic. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Hi Ladonna - as a truck driver, cruise should be your best friend, especially if there is the possibility of a fuel bonus. I once drove a truck that the cruise control didn't work. After a 10 hour day, I thought my leg was going to drop off from holding the fuel pedal down. Back in the day when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I pulled 6 axle garbage trailers with 135,000 lbs. We were running 470 Detroits with 13-speeds. To motivate drivers to use the cruise, the company set the engines so you'd get 430hp on the pedal and 470 on the cruise. To say the least we used the cruise a lot. Even on the hills after dropping a gear, we'd put it back on cruise. Happy trucking, Cheers Rick

    I think i overuse my cruise control, i use it even in the city if the traffic is flowing well enough.
    Also, i absolutely love Mercedes' cruise control stalk, it's just so simple. Enable, and speed up or down by tapping it up or down, disable by pushing away, resume by pulling.
    Newer ones also have a 2-step stalk that let you go up or down by 10kmh instead of 1 just by tapping it harder.

      Also, not all manual transmission cars disable cruise control by pushing in the clutch.

In the mountains with my 2L Honda CRV, I have to downshift to make it up the hills. In our Subaru WRX, I don't have to change gears at all. Hi Rick!!
    I was brave enough to take my 5A test on a manual car haha failed for demerit points :(
    specifically for "cruising" when stopping -you know when stopping I used N instead of a gear ,
    But I don't understand what's the correct way to do it ?
    Shifting gears one by one is too complicated and I've also tried to shift from 5 to 2 , for example ,
    but I feel it's not "friendly" for the engine .... what is supposed to be the correct way ??

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Maria - thank you for letting us know. Kudos for your bravery of taking a road test in a manual transmission. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. Yes, you cannot coast in neutral when coming to a stop in a manual transmission. And the reason is old school, meaning that if the brakes fail--which will never happen--they want a backup to bring the vehicle to a stop. So if the brakes fail, you can just turn the engine off and the vehicle will come to a stop because the transmission is in gear.
      The correct way to come to a stop is to leave it in gear, brake and bring the tachometer down to about 1,000rpm (petrol engine), and then push the clutch in and come to a complete stop. Only after you come to a complete stop, can you shift back to your starting gear. See this video: ruclips.net/video/Ec34hbWaRgE/видео.html And have a look at the playlist to shift a manual car - these may help: ruclips.net/p/PL0x-bChcUvwE4covDy04Sre8cPPb-q4HL If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. If you only need to slow down slightly, just use the set/coast button to bring the speed down slightly, then resume/accel to return. If you have to slow down alot, then use the brake, then resume/accel to return to speed.

    I watched some of your videos, because I was a professional test car driver for Honda for 3 yrs and have a new driver that I thought could benefit from your videos. That's until I watched this one, you were showing all the benefits of using cruise control while driving in the rain on wet roads. You should never use it when driving in rain, snow, or roads that potentially have ice or black ice, if your vehicle begins to hydro plane that is where the danger lies. I know that most modern vehicles have traction control, but the danger comes from the drivers initial reaction to hit the brakes, which will cause additional lose of control. I really hope you take this video down and make a new one on a dry day, because all of the things you said about cruise control on dry roads do apply.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 лет назад +6

      Hi Rebecca Merkel - Thank you for your comment. However, not using the cruise control in the rain or in the winter is one of those myth that persists in the driving industry. Cruise control originated when bias ply tires and questionable quality radial tires were an option for vehicles. Today, we have quality tires that have a lot of siping that moves the water from beneath the tire and prevents hydroplaning. But because tires were unreliable when cruise control originated, drivers have been led to believe that cruise control is only for dry road - which is no longer the case due to advances in automotive technology - as you pointed out. Also, as you know, driving is more an art then a science. And if it's raining heavy, then yes, do not use cruise control; but in moderate rain, cruise control can be used if your vehicle is fitted with quality tires. And I advocate cruise control owing to the benefits of reducing both fatigue and distracted driving. All the best, Cheers Rick

    + Smart Drive Test Hello Rick, do I only use cruise control when the freeway/ highway doesn't have many cars riding on it? If so, then how can I be sure that the freeway/ highway I'm using doesn't have too many cars , do I just count the numbers of cars in the lanes , or ensure that my following distance is far enough ahead , check for vacant blind spots areas or am I looking to avoid rush hour trafffic jams? Basically what I am trying to say is , how can I better identify the good instances to use cruise control ? I have seen in the video that the freeway u were driving on had less cars but how what if I encounter more cars than what was shown in the video and I operate in cruise control , what do I do keep it on or off?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад

      Hi Superb Abigail - thank you for your comment and query. It's not the number of vehicles that determines whether you can use cruise control, but rather the flow of traffic. If the traffic is moving along well and it's not stopping and starting, then you can use cruise control. As I said in the video, set the cruise control 5-8kph below the flow of traffic and stay in the slow lane. That way you will not have to activate and deactivate cruise control all the time. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Nice video good information, but unfortunately it isn 't that easy to drive like this on the german Autobahn. On two lane Autobahn almost impossible. You need to switch the cruise control on and off all the time cause the other people don't let you change the lane. they drive by with like 180+ kmh so u need to brake to not crash in the car in the front of you.. And if you just block the left lane to roll by with like 2-3 kmh more u will get the headlight flash and the midlefinger. lol Sad but true.
