I watched many videos on cruise control where most mentioned how to use it. But one where's there a good recommendation driving at a safe pace & how it affects the fuel consumption is what makes your video stand out.

Cruise control absolutely saves gas. I went from getting 258 miles a tank to 468 miles in my truck for my commute to work. I can’t believe I’ve went so long without using cruise control .

Thanks for the info. For me, the most annoying thing about using crusing control at speed limit on HOV lane in BC is that almost all rear cars coming up tend to first tailgate mine at high speed and try to take over even at the strech with the white solid lines. Some of those drivers even show clear aggressive moves (e.g. No turn signaling and sudden right-left lane change) when they taking over... while all I want is cruising at the fuel efficient top speed allowed. (Typically 90~100 km/h speed limits around Vancouver region) I wondered whether cruise loving and law abiding drivers from the other part of the country have experienced the same.

I just drove from Montreal to Toronto in a 2021 Nissan Rogue. I was amazed to get 5.8 l/100km for the last 100km stretch, and between 6.1 to 6.4 on the other legs of the trip with cruise set at 100 km/hr. I was not in a rush as I had no desire to drive through rush hour traffic in Toronto, so I relaxed and arrived after the rush was over.

I just got a car with cruise control, just wish it was adaptive cruise control.
I definitely get better mpg doing the same drive even when I have the AC on vs it not being on while not using cruise control.

I've found that on highways with hills or other inclines I get worse mpg with cruise on than if I keep my foot steady on the gas. This is because the car on cruise control will press the accelerator going up a hill to avoid slowing down and the transmission may even downshift. This consumes significantly more full than if you just allow the car to slow down a bit going up the hill by not giving it more gas. I wish there was a "no heroics" mode for cruise control that would recognize you are going up a hill and permit a slow down without automatically stomping on the gas to maintain that speed. I often cancel the cruise before I start up a hill.

Cruise control all day everyday for me. Simple physics really isn’t a hard aspect to grasp. I see a lot of drivers in the left lane fluctuate in speed, only to use their brakes and slow down because the car ahead of them is too close. The more you brake, especially on the highway, the more gas you use to compensate for that lost speed. Which blows my mind that the majority of drivers do this.

  • @EyeonthePrize247

Cruise Control is my favorite. I save a good amount on gas and overall wear and tear. My 2016 GMC Terrain (AWD 2.4 ECOTEC) is about 4,100 pounds including myself & cargo which is about 600 pounds more than the average crossover... he’s a heavy one, lol. I tend to be a lead footed driver and with a mixed amount of highway and city driving, I get about 23-26 mpg when using CC compared to about 18-19 without.
I love driving on the highway with little to no traffic as people really suck at keeping consistent speeds. If I’m able to safely keep CC on with some traffic and am approaching someone clearly driving slower, I’ll move over ahead of time to pass and it’s so stupid when you see them then speed up because they see they’re being passed… then I move back over only to have to pass them in another minute because of their inconsistent speed. So infuriating.

Watch out !! Driving a new CC which will slow you down in traffic ... in a demonstration a friend had me not hit the break at an intersection when following a car and sure enough we stopped at the prescribed distance behind the vehicle in front. The problem is the lead vehicle went strait and I was turning. With nothing in front of me the CC was taking me back up to 60mph while making a sharp turn. BRAKE TIME !

asteroidsex i don’t think it saves fuel while going up hills since the system lowers the gear/ raises the rpms to maintain the set speed while going up an incline, this burns more fuel but decreases the engine load so it is a win/lose situation

You're absolutely right about the annoying drivers. I drive about 70 miles total to and from work. I can tell when people aren't using cruise control because they're never constant. Half of my drive is in a one lane too so when it opens up to the two lanes those people I'm behind will all the sudden speed up even though there wasn't anyone in front of them. I could understand if I was tailgating them but I rarely do that unless it's bumper to bumper which of course is very slow.

So basically if you want great fuel economy, dont buy a big car or 4wd. Oh and don't buy a diesel. *cough*

Not true. The cruise does not save fuel.
When the cruise is on, the computer tend to fix the speed not the press on the accelerator. Thus, when road go up, computer will put a lot of fuel to keep the selected speed as soon as possible. And when the road go down the computer will not benefit from that and uses the engine break to keep the speed.
I think the cruise is only good because it prevent driving over the limited speed.

So, I call bullshit that only cruice controll will help you get better gas milage in all situations. Lets be real, theres a lot of variables to calculate a more economical trip. The most important is tyre pressure, along side with change of engine oil and such. But my point is, which you said yourself - all people dont use cruice control and its NOT a standard even in new cars. Some brands have it as an extra option to put it, so stop assuming things without any ground to stand on. My Ford from 2017 doesnt have cruice control and I know a lot more new cars that dont have it as standard. Maybe if youre rich then most cars in your segment have it as standard.
The thing is variable speeds may help you save fuel if you have cruice control turned OFF. For example, you have a hill up ahead and the road is limited to 50 km/h (30 mph or something), the angle is 20 degrees. To save fuel here the same principle applies as if you were on a bike, you would want to get momentum before you start climbing the hill, gaining speed rather than having a constant slow speed over the hill that will consume more fuel.

CC is a fairly stamdard feature in today's new vehicles. Take the highest saling sedan - Honda Civic for example, the base model in Canada comes standard with Adaptive Cruise Control with low speed follow. 2021 base model starts at $23400 MSRP. I would not call this vehicle expensive and ACC a luxurious feature.

@@Nyz1ro no. Stop. You are basically saying some drivers can drive better than a robot.
That is like saying you can shift more efficiently than an automatic transmission. You are not a bad person for not using cruise control, and you should forgive the guy in this video for saying only idiots drive without cruise control.
If you don't have it; don't stress about it. It is wrong to say you can get equal or better gas mileage than cruise control over long distances. There are factors other than fuel efficiency or speed that a human driver has to worry about: fidgeting with navigation, carrying a conversation, adjusting the radio, etc.

Once I started using cruise control on the 401 from living in Guelph Ontario and driving to Milton Ontario every day, I realized that I could relax and listen to music and be less stressed when I arrive to work. Best is to stick to 105 km in the middle lane. Anybody else who wants to pass you, can use the fast lane. Turn up your rearview mirror so you don't have your peripheral vision distracting you. Don't worry about what is behind you, tailgaters have their own issues going on. 🙂🚌🚐🚑🚒🚓🚕🚗🚙🛻🚚🚛🏍🛺?
