Hehe yeah Poor Hornet actually is lacking internal compartments in this slice, so the hole you see below her stern is actually that semi-AP bomb going all the way from the flight deck to the bottom. Will not happen in the future, but yeah, in theory you could have over penetration from shells or bombs, like what happened to Old Swayback at Komandorski for instance. Then damage will be calculated based on the place where the blast occurs, not on impact proper. That's why here Hornet is leaking oil even though she did not get hit by a torpedo, as this area is rigged to spring a leak (will happen with near misses too).
As for the vertical stuff (cam elevation), you're right - it was planned but not implemented yet because I am still a bit confused about whether to use + & - for that job on the keypad. IIRC we used to have it work like that on the Total War series so I might ask JB to go this way. :)

      Question about the Plane AI.
It seems that the American planes tend to loiter around the carriers for a bit, while the Japanese planes will drop bombs and get the hell out. Is this an AI quirk or are they just following an American doctrine I am not aware of? Or am I just not understanding what is happening?

Any idea if the crew will be on the guns instead of just the guns firing with nobody on them?

I believe that's on the developer's list of things to implement, but they're focused on other things right now.
