I think it's just down to personal preference and what works in the context of what you're doing and what amp/guitar you're using. They're all solid speakers

He'll be tweaking it a bit and putting the chassis (originally in a small box head) in a new combo cab. You've helped make the decision process a lot easier. Another great video Scott. It's always amazing to me how much I love Celestion speakers! I really liked all three. They each are a different flavor, or different color in the soundscape they create. You have partially answered a question I have had which is: Would a lower wattage speaker sound better with my 10 watt combo amp (Blackstar Studio 10 KT88 with Celestion Seventy 80 speaker)? But this video dispenses with that question because all three sound great at 35, 50 and 90 watt ratings.

None of them are really an Alnico Blue but louder IMO if that was what they were trying to achieve. The Ruby and Cream (the one I have) are close but less detailed in the upper mids and the Gold is raspier. All amazing speakers but the Blues are just phenomenal, if you have a 10-15 watt amp or buy a couple $$
The BLUE is the best speaker ever made, in my humble opinion, and I've been a player for 59 years ... Klipsch made some real fine speakers as well back in the day. Their basic 15" stereo speaker woofer would have been great in any bass amp; but they made one even heavier than that one, if memory serves me ...
Yep, I still think the Cream sounds best. The Ruby is too dark, the Gold has a weird notchy sound like the mids are missing, the Cream sounds clear and balanced.
I am going to put a pair of Rubys in a 4×12 closed-back cab with some Greenbacks. Isobaric mixing is a new thing for me but you all seem to be getting away with it. 🤔 we'll see.
I hate to pop your bubble but there is no way of knowing which of them you'd end up wanting to keep other than buying them all and making up your mind after trying them all in person, these demo's are like trying to judge food by watching somebody eat.
If recorded well it does give at least an idea where to begin your quest but I do generaly agree with you because there are so many variables. Thanks for keeping it real!
@@sillennium I did buy one Cream Alnico 12" and found out some things I'd never had guessed I'd find out any other way about that speaker (some good issues, some bad). This is one of the reasons you can't really be sure until you tried them in person, in your amp, with your guitars, with your fingers. I have owned several G12 Blue alnico Cel. and so I don't need to try them, but I'm considering a Gold. The cream alnico impressed me with it's very loud clean tone which would sound awesome in any tweed with 12s if your going for the vintage Jensen tone, I know that sounds strange. I thought Celestion was the King of Crunchville and not anything more than that. But I'm looking for one that gets the Clapton Bluesbreaker tone, and noticed Metro. amps used Golds in a Bluesbreaker clone..so that must be a good candidate.
@@sillennium okay, after ABing the blue directly with the gold, through a Vox AC15C1, the blue was perfect, it got "there" quickly by comparison and stayed there. The gold started to get there by the time the AC15 was maxed. Conversely, the 2 goldbacks in my extension cabinet was perfect running any of my 50 watt heads into, but I wouldn't dream of sending 50 watts into a pair of blues. In the areas where you can compare these 2 speakers, ie clean, and overdriven with more watts having to drive the gold, they sound remarkably similar, much closer to each other than the the Ruby or the Creme. Im glad that i made the right choice of alnico speaker, ive got 2x12 alnico cream @16ohms rating and im happy with it...I kept it inside 2x12 cab closedback @8ohms wiring. Sound is similar to V30 uk made at clean mode but a bit brighter..Balance & articulation is present so, its very useful from vintage to modern hi-gain sound. All of my amps sounded more livelier than b4 ie Victory V30, Marshall dsl40, Engl Screamer, Blackstar HT50. My friend was also amazed till he bought 8ohms for his Blues deluxe, 68 Princeton Reverb etc..were both impressed upon hearing the amp sound transformation. Afaik, alnico cream 90 is best among celestion’s alnico brand line up.
sillennium I've been working in a musicstore for many years and tried all kinds of vintage & boutique cabs / speakers and gotta say, the Alnico Gold is one of the best I've ever tried / owned. Tone inspirations for me are Doug Rappoport, Steve Lukather, Joe Perry, Angus Young, Van Halen, Landau etc.. And this Gold can cover it all.. Personally I prefer the Blue over the Ruby.. The Blue seems like a lower wattage equivalent to the Gold and the Ruby like a lower wattage equivalent to the Cream. Thank you very much for your demo!
Appreciate the misinformed feedback but there is a separate video of clean tones, just as I stated in intro. Find that and maybe it will be less worthless
